PDF Editor FAQ

What does the flight information display board say in the event of a plane crash?

They will first show the flight as DELAYED and after the crash has been confirmed change to CANCELLED.There is no reason to create panic even if the board could show that it crashed or something like that, and it would be disrespectful to both the passengers and the families and friends waiting for them. This is the arrivals board at Beijing on the day MH370 disappeared.

On Flightradar24, I saw a Boeing 777 flying at 780 mph. This can't be due to tailwind because it flew to the west. Did it fly faster than sound, or is it a bug?

About a year ago, I experienced the fastest flight I had ever flown. I took these pictures of the flight information displayed on the plane’s entertainment system:Notice the 710 mph groundspeed. That’s blazing fast for a commercial airliner. But it’s purely due to the 181 mph tailwind. (See Joe Shelton’s answer for an explantion of how the tailwind can get that high). The “problem” with the flight information system (and Flightradar24) is that it displays groundspeed because that’s our speed of travel — how fast we get to our destination (and what matters to passengers). But what matters for speed of flying comparisons is airspeed, which is not shown in the flight information system (or Flightradar24). However, we can calculate it. 710 mph - 181 mph = 529 mph. This is less than a 777’s typical cruising speed (roughly 570 mph at 40K feet). So the speed of flying was actually slower than normal.Note that the airspeed is also what matters for speed of sound comparisons (and Mach number calculations). The plane was flying at 40,000 feet, where the speed of sound is about 660 mph. The Mach number can be calculated as 529 / 660 = 0.80, consistent with the reported Mach number of 0.799.So the flight information system (and Flightradar24) displays accurate data, but they can seem inconsistent, due to the juxtaposition of both ground-based and air-based quantities.Note that if you were to divide the groundspeed (710 mph) by the speed of sound at altitude (660 mph), you would get M=1.08. That’s apparently faster than the speed of sound. But it’s also artificially high ... and the wrong comparison (groundspeed vs. speed of sound at altitude).Similarly, if you were to divide the airspeed (529 mph) by the speed of sound at ground level (about 761 mph), you would get M = 0.70. That’s also the wrong comparison (airspeed vs. speed of sound at ground level) and artificially low.Instead, the flight information system correctly displays the Mach number based on airspeed: M=0.799.

Have you ever snapped at a rude customer and gotten away with it?

Yes. A man approached my booth, demanding to know his wife’s whereabouts. I politely asked for her flight information, and he had no idea which airline she was flying with, except she was flying from Detroit. I checked every airline, but was unable to find anything. I referred him to Delta Airlines to help him, since I was constantly pulling teeth and talking to a brick wall. When he came back to my booth, he cussed me out and had the audacity to throw accusations about not providing services. I explained to this idiot that I wasn’t a mind reader and couldn’t imagine what his wife puts up with on a daily basis regarding his foul attititude. Instead of getting in touch with the airport operator, I contacted law enforcement and they arrived within minutes. The expression on his face was priceless, and I couldn’t help but maintain a pleasant smile on my face. His wife found him, and they were both escorted out of the airport. Neither one of them acknowledged my existence, which was fine by me.
