PDF Editor FAQ

What is your favorite county and why?

The one I live in Pennsylvania. We got political problems in the State Legislature as the Republicans still have the power to stay their retrospective “Leave it Beaver” fantasies of governance. Money is hidden in secret account’s, honest, but somehow it’s not held accountable. The Republicans are again tying to gerrymander the state. (they took a big hit last election). The refuse to tax the Fracking in our state yet we have a deficit. Sound familiar? The Allentown and Harrisburg Mayors were convicted and sent to prison for their role in the “pay to play” game. But, Allentown, Bethlehem and Easton are all in the middle of a huge resurgence. Other neighbors are flourishing. We have become a multi-cultural community. We have great restaurants, a terrific art museum, a Casino, 3 theaters, one recently renovated magnificently from it’s core back from the turn of the 20th century. We have art walks and the largest percentage of public park land in America. We have a plethora of farmers markets, many outdoors but the Grand daddy is Allentown’s. It’s indoors and has just about everything from almost everywhere and culture that you need. We have 7 wineries and 31 brew pubs. We like our beer. We have 4 local distillers. Fullers gin makes a great Martini. We have a decent bus system but no rail. Our Airport is undergoing a big expansion. Uber’s all over the place.Lehigh University, Cedar Crest University, DeSales University, Lafayette College, Muhlenberg College, Lehigh Carbon County Community College, and Northampton Area Community College are within a 10 mile radius. We have The Phillies triple A baseball team, the Iron Pigs(new stadium), the Flyers AHL team, the Phantoms (new stadium) , field hockey (some of the Nations best High School teams), Great High School Wrestling, Great Basketball, Baseball, Soccer, Softball, and not just beer league. We’re the home of Ty Stofflet and his legacies continues. We constantly compete on the National level. We have a lot of golf courses, (and one P.G.A course) a bunch of public tennis (including clay), and handball courts. Basketball courts are plentiful, little league baseball is still big here as well as football. Lacrosse is a recent but it’s become big and soccer is played everywhere and regularly. Runners have many, many amazing miles of interconnected trails to explore and just enjoy. We run one marathon here and two half marathons. 5 and 10 K’s seem to be run for some charity weekly. And every town, borough and township has public swimming pools. A few even provide cast iron grills, just bring your own charcoal and hot dogs. And rest assured National Health Clubs are everywhere. We have a plethora of movie theaters, an IMax Movie house, but my favorite is a restored 1920’s Movie Theater, the ROXY in Northampton, Pa. It’s interior is incredible and it’s just beautiful to look at. The Wednesday afternoon (starting time for the cartoon is 1:05 pm, that’s right every movie including Captain Marvel starts with a vintage cartoon) ticket price is $3.00.We have a large teaching University health system with Saint Luke’s who is affiliated with Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia. And a competing health care system is the Lehigh Valley Health Care System that too has grown exponentially. we have a devoted children’s hospital and a burn unit. Overall everything but oncology is on pace and great care can be expected. Philadelphia has the great oncologists and oncology networks. There only 50 miles south. Oh that’s right, both Philly and New York a just an hour away. 13% of us are daily commuters. Housing is that much cheaper and schools are that much better, well, most of the schools except Allentown. They are addressing their problems but they are a long way off from being the school they once were.We have the largest annual Street Rod show this side of the Mississippi. It follows a huge antique and Concurs car show two week prior. We now have a annual Air Show at A.B.E., our airport. We have the “Great Allentown Fair” and every church has it’s festival every summer. My favorite is the Syrian Christian Church and the Greek Orthodox festivals. The food sold is authentic and cheap. We’re the Home of PPL, Air Products, Martin Guitar, Crayola, Just Born (Peeps!), Olympus, Talen Energy, Braun Medical and F. L. Schmidt. Because we are a major traffic hub Amazon Is here. Warehousing abounds. Small and medium size business abounds. There never is a lack of employee opportunities. And you asked, and No I not a member of any organization trying to promote the Greater Lehigh Valley. Oops, forgot, cable television originated here in 1948. It’s gone from cheap to ridiculous. I cut the cord and stream, otherwise It’s just a good place to live an visit,

What is it like living in Philadelphia compared to Allentown, PA?

I grew up in Allentown in the 60’s-70s. Went to college, moved away, worked all over the country for years but I have lived and moved back and worked in both cities and New York/North Jersey over the last 40 years.I agree with most of the comments previously. Allentown and the Lehigh Valley has approx. 800K residents, Philadelphia approx 2 million. However within an hour or so (within 100 miles you have both New York and Philadelphia metro (15 million). You have a pretty good bedroom community to both cities/regions and much less the cost then the nearer suburbs. If you are “Philly-centric” the area has become “suburban/urban” Philly. The Phillies/Eagles/Flyers made great decisions years ago to place their minor league teams and the Eagles had the training camp at Lehigh University for many years, this increased the loyalty and also locked up the TV Sports channels. If you are more New York based it also has a tremendously large influx of New Yorkers from the 40’s to now (including yours truly, circa late 50’s). Also due to TV reception you have both cities local news and entertainment and sports (mostly) The Yanks and Nets are in-area on Satellite. The Knicks/Rangers/Islanders are hard to get because MSG refuses to allow the Cables the rights but through Directv you do have the ability. Not a bad place to raise a family either. The City of Allentown/Bethelehem/Easton are much more urban then most would believe but that is what you would expect in any larger Eastern City. Outside the city limits it becomes suburban very quickly and in every category. But all 3 cities have tremendous park systems, restaurants, bars and activities and are quite nice.As I said earlier, I’ve lived and worked around the country. The only thing I can actually hate here is the weather but that is not specific to either area. Winters in the Northeastern US are horrible and lately the summers have become quite humid and hot (much like the muggy Southern US). Blame it on whatever… Climate change, warming…. Not much you can do about that though right away.Hope this helps a bit!
