In the UK, you can just look at the registration plates:"[The age identifier] changes twice a year, in March and September. As a German, I have a few issues I want to point out.1.) I’m watching CNN for the first time of my life for more than a few minutes. And it differs from election covering in German TV a lot. As a matter of fact, it reminds me of a mixture of a basic educational program about how elections work and a sportscast.And especially the latter makes total sense! It turns an election into a thrilling event in which the lead changes and changes. It would be fun, if it wouldn’t last that long…2.) That brings me to my second point: The slowness of the counting process baffles almost everyone. I know no other country which takes so long to count their votes. There is a meme running through my German bubble:(Translation:“It’s crazy how long that election lasts. Thank god for our system, in which on election day one minute after 6 PM [when polls are closed in Germany], the one undecided issue is, if the FDP[1] stays in the parliament.”)Our system seems rather boring, but reliable compared with the US elections - which is interesting, because it were the USA who brought us democracy the last time. I don’t know, where the differences are regarding the vote counting, but it seems, the US American way is very ineffective.3.) It still baffles me, why the voter registration process has to be that complicated in the USA. But that is mostly a German thing, because we have the good old Prussian resident register system which is the only thing we need to know who is allowed to vote. So the whole voter registration issue seems ridiculous from a German point of view.4.) I still believe, that a representative system would be more fair and more reliable, but I understand, that there is no momentum for reform in the USA - and, you had to face the fact, that your elections would get far more boring!Footnotes[1] Why is the political FDP Germany’s rich people’s party?
