Some of this “motorization” involved moving troops around, but it was far more important in upgrading logistics and supply. When the Lend Lease act passed in March of 1941, the floodgates of American wealth opened up for the American military, the British military, and eventually the military forces of the Soviet Union, France, Australia, India, China, and a dozen other combatants.American factories turned out over eight hundred thousand 2 1/2 ton trucks during the war, along with a million 1 ton and 1/2 ton trucks and related vehicles. British and Commonwealth contributed hundreds of thousands of vehicles of their own design.Just as importantly, having your military dependent on trucks requires you to build roads and bridges and logistical networks to support them. American and Commonwealth engineers swarmed across the inhabited territory of Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, and the Pacific, turning tracks and jungle into hard-surfaced and gravel roads, while building docks and warehouses and workshops to support their fleets of trucks. After the war, while redundant warships were scraped and hundreds of aircraft were dropped into the ocean, used trucks remained in use from Africa to Siberia. The poorer regions of the world became as dependent on imported oil as the developed world. Food and hard goods moved from place to place by ship and truck. Mechanical skills spread through rural populations and every nation became part of world trade in fuel and vehicles.Airliners and Air Travel — A handbook for a game based on H. P. Lovecraft’s stories noted that the 1920s and 1930s were an interesting era because there were cultures interacting around the world that included Stone Age, pre-industrial, sailing ships, horse-drawn farm equipment, diesel-powered ships and vehicles, and propeller-driven, jet-driven, and rocket-propelled flying machines.While rocket propulsion began in the 1920s and took man to the moon only forty years later, flight and air technology from World War II that revolutionized all of society was based on four key inventions that matured during the war.All-metal enclosed air frames - Dwight Eisenhower named the DC-3, known to the military as the C-47 Skytrain or Dakota or “Gooney Bird,” one of the five most important weapons of World War II. Before the DC-3 came into service in 1935, cross-country air travel had to be done in daylight, flights could be made only in good weather, and travel had to be in hops of no more then a few hundred miles. Very little cargo could be moved by air, as most aircraft lacked the capacity to move anything in bulk. Further, large aircraft of the time were not physically strong. Even the best of them left passengers constantly aware of how fragile flying was. The C-47 reversed all of that. It could carry two dozen passengers or three tons of cargo. Accidents and breakdowns were rare enough that you could schedule a wing of these transports to supply an island outpost or isolated infantry division for weeks or months. The structural elements of the DC-3 are still part of modern aircraft design and hundreds of DC-3s are still in commercial use in the 21st Century.Pressurized aircraft cabins — The B-29 Superfortess was the only large aircraft of World War II to have completely sealed and pressurized internal spaces in the fuselage. While this was a direct development of the all-metal skinned concept the DC-3 helped pioneer, the engineering of the B-29 took four years to work out. It allowed the aircraft to operate at altitudes of thirty-thousand feet and higher with passengers on board not specially equipped and trained for the freezing temperatures and low air pressures at those altitudes. After World War II, the age of modern airline travel could begin, as the pressurized cabin meant long-distance flights at 30,000 to 40,000 feet were now possible for mundane passengers. Transcontinental and trans-oceanic flight became a reality for the entire developed world.Jet Engines — While the famous Me-262 was the best known jet of World War II and the only one to see substantial combat, British and American designers were working on their own designs. Within five years of the end of the war, jet fighter aircraft replaced propeller planes in major air forces. Jet engine bombers came along at the same time. Most importantly, jet engine airliners first appeared in 1952. From the first, these aircraft could manage speeds in excess of 400 mph and lacked the intense vibration of propeller driven aircraft. This made single day trans-oceanic travel possible and something any adult or child could handle without stress or exhaustion. These aircraft captured the international travel market from ocean liners and made air travel a shared experience for people in every developed economy.Radar -- First developed as a secret military weapon by the British and Germans, among others, in the 1930s, radar became ubiquitous among modern military forces during the war. After, it made day to day air travel possible for civilian cargo and passenger traffic without making every flight subject to the whim of local weather conditions. UPDATED 12/18First, this is a long answer … I’ll start with my own personal experiences, that includes not ONLY my post-grad Residency & Fellowship training, but also includes my Military time, Medical Missions, and working in CHC’s (community health care center’s).FACT - In the US / Canada - there are ONLY 2 types of Doctors or Physicians that are recognized as : Fully-Licensed (in the practice of Medicine & Surgery) and, can become eligible for DEA-Certification … only DO’s & MD’s.Second - I will include the latest details, info and FACT’S, in a Summary.…I matriculated thru The University of XYZ College of Medicine - HSC - Level 1Later, throughout my Residency & Fellowship training, I met many medical students who had attended a variety of D.O. & M.D. Medical school’s.Some had been admitted to both allopathic, AND osteopathic schools.Those who had a strong desire for Primary Care (Family Practice, Internal Medicine, Pediatric’s, OB-GYN), and preferred smaller cities, towns and rural area’s; had a preference for Osteopathic Medical schools. This also TRANSLATES, that they would have to undergo Excellent Residency training, due to lack of Global Support.The AOA (American Osteopathic Association) - has Traditionally pushed Primary Care specialties; and their statistical data in Primary Care, has demonstrated that between 64% to 78% of DO graduates chose a career in Primary Care, nation-wide, every year.Gender-wise 2018 - DO med schools attract more Women overall, and this trend continues to grow.In 8 years of USN career - I worked alongside Hundreds of physicians and unless, we had a white coat with our name tag on it, there was no distinction between a D.O. or M.D.Our name Tag, simply said … Dr. House, or whatever Surname you used.It Didn't make any difference in the military, as long as your Experience, Medical and/or, Surgical Knowledge base, and Skill set’s were Highly Proficient, and your Personality was Team-based.Their OMT (manipulative therapy skills) - were often sought out for the more senior Marines, who ALWAYS had musculo-skeletal complaints.I also recall that someone stated that General Norman Schwarzkopf, would not allow any physician to care for him, unless it was a DO; and that when he deployed to Iraq in the first Iraq war, he made sure that he had his own DO with him, at all times. Google it ... it’s absolutely true.AMA Factoid - in the 1960’s, the AMA offered all D.O.s in California to “Legally Convert” their D.O. degree’s to an M.D. title. This was purely a Political AMA Policy, as over 80% of the doctors in California at that time, were ... DO’s!It changed nothing - they were the same good (or bad) doctors that they were beforehand.It is what you make of it. I noticed a propensity for the younger, most recent DO & MD grads in Southern California, have been trending towards Emergency Medicine, Orthopedics/Sports Medicine, and Sports Medicine (non-surgical).American Pro Team’s - many Basketball & Football major franchises have Orthopedic Surgeons & Sports Medicine & PM&Rehab Centers or Facilities, Staffed with DO’s that lead and direct their in-house and/or off-site Sports Medicine programs.In 2018, in comparing AMA & AOA perspectives from 10, 15 and 20 years ago, there has been a lot of MAJOR changes with DO medical schools; and I strongly believe that the USPHS, DOD & US Military ... had a lot to do with it.THINK - if it wasn’t TRUE, you wouldn’t have DO’s being accepted into MD Residency’s & Fellowship’s, period.I’ve also met some outstanding Fellows that were both trained as DO/MD’s, had sat for both DO COMLEX + MD USMLE exam’s, plus both DO & MD Specialty Boards, and with an excellent attitude, and passion to excel in Clinical-Research programs ...Personally, it really depends on WHICH medical school someone attended + WHERE their Residency Program was located, and Trauma Level Hospital + WHAT Specialty in Medicine they choose.AND, WHAT they did with all that training ... THAT is the Bottom Line as far as Academics ... AND you have to Publish nationally.However, the Practice of Medicine is an ART ... not every Smart-Ass DO or MD has “People Skill’s” ... the ‘Bed-side’ Manner of Empathy, Sympathy, Caring & Compassion type of Virtues, either. AND, That’s OK, as there are Other Medicine Specialties that they are a better fit for …It’s like having an IQ of 185 ... and THAT person never finished college, and is Now Homeless pushing a shopping cart, near Stanford University ... Versus ... Someone with an IQ of 100 ... and They “INVENTED” a towel called “Sham Wow” ... and now sitting watching the waves coming in, with on-demand PA & Chef services ... on their own island.SUMMARY - for NBME = National Board of Medical Examiners (Out-dated) … USMLE = United States Medical Licensing Exam (Present & Future).The 1990’s Changes in Medical Licensing for both DO’s and MD’s -For MD’s - in the 1990’s, the Licensing NBME Exam, was NOT recognized, by every US State. So it was considered as SUB-Par.For MD’s in the 1990’s - the only option for any MD who didn’t pass the NBME exam, was to sit for a 100 Q&A “State Medical Board Exam”, that was only in effect for that particular state, but did/does not have National effect.In the 1990’s, some states like Louisiana - did NOT even require a LICENSE to practice medicine, right out of medical school. It was deferred to a later time schedule.In the 1990’s, some states like Texas - did NOT accept, the NBME Exam. You had to sit for the FLEX Exam.Question your MD - which Licensing Exam did you sit for? Did you FAIL it, and had to take State Board exam? If they only sat for a State Board Exam or the NBME, consider that Sub-par.Question your DO - which Licensing exam did you sit for? If they didn’t sit for the FLEX, or the current USMLE, or the COMLEX (since 2005), consider that Sub-par.The ONLY Pathway to a Texas License, was to sit for a 3-day exam, called the FLEX - the FSMB's > Federation Licensing Examination (FLEX) program, which was the ONLY Nationally-accepted medical licensing exam program, at the time in the US.The FLEX - was initially used as a Licensing Pathway for FMG (Foreign Medical Graduates), so is/was on Higher Level of Difficulty, as you can imagine.The FLEX had/has International recognition, where the NBME did/does not.The FLEX was used as a template for the new and current USMLE Exam, when it was being Tested in the late 1980’s thru the 1990’s. See below.FACT - DO’s, were eligible to sit for the FLEX, as well as, register to sit for the current USMLE. Many have sat for BOTH the COMLEX + FLEX, or COMLEX + USMLE. Just ask, don’t take the word verbatim from Troll’s replying to this question.The Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB) - the FSMB serves as the national voice for its member boards and is a recognized authority throughout the United States and internationally on issues related to medical licensure and discipline.The FSMB - has/had authority over all National Licensing exam’s for both US and FMG’s, and represents the 70 state medical and osteopathic boards of the United States and its territories and co-sponsors the United States Medical Licensing Examination.The current United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) is a three-step (5-part) professional examination for medical licensure that is sponsored by the FSMB and the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME).BTW - - The current President and CEO of the FSMB is Humayun Chaudhry, D.O.Medical schools - Private or State? Nationally Ranked?… or so low on the totem pole that they are barely mentioned on page 896 on annual 2018 Princeton Review?MD Med schools Factoid - are the ONLY ones where you can/could/may obtain an MD degree on either a Cruise ship, or attend a Caribbean like St. George University. Check it out of you are really that interested.Hospital or HSC (Health Sciences Center) - Residency, and/or Fellowship training? Where? How long? Graduated? Honors?ALL US Hospital’s are RANKED by Level of Care - Level 1 is the highest, and denotes a certification and recognition as a specific level Trauma Center, regardless of STATE Location, or UNIVERSITY Affiliation.Level’s 3 thru 5 - is where the Sissies train/ed. Just ask.National Fellowship Training Year #1 for DO’s & MD’s - Sub/Sub-specialization training on a National Level, is Crazy Competitive, and HSC Fellowship Program Directors … Only select the very BEST VETTED CANDIDATES from National Residency Program Graduates; and it’s quite difficult as there are many Excellent & Outstanding US, AND, Foreign candidates. - At this altitude, the O2 Level’s are Low …National Fellowship Training Year’s #2 & 3 - Only a few DO’s and MD’s are in this level of Fellowship training. - Certainly a pathway to the coveted ‘Ivory Tower’.Research Publications - this separates the Men form the boys, and any DO or MD with at least 25 or more publications, is a good start. Publications must be “Peer-Reviewed”, With important contributions to Science & Medicine, and featured at major National Medical Conferences, or national Journals.The Golden Ratio for DO’s and MD’s - Once a DO or MD has completed Fellowship training + has established Research Publications, AND has been recognized as a Science and/or Medicine Reference contributor, by: NIH / NCBI . Gov … that physician/researcher is in the 1% … of the Top 1% Nationally.Now, go get some …It Depends.Bluster & Banter - Any doctor that is disparaging Other doctors and physicians … is most likely ran himself into the ditch … or, is just another Ult-Reich, Agent Orange, Grandiose Supporter, simply jacking his jaw, and completely UN-happy with The Way HIS or Her Life turned out … or, simply a common variety jack-ass.Why don’t you instead do something different? … like go on a Medical Mission, or Sign Up to Volunteer at many Non-profit CHC’s in Hawaii, or on the mainland, that can’t afford a doctor?
