My child wasn’t speaking at 18 months, either. At the 18 month pediatrician visit, they went down a behavioral checklist. When I answered “no” to “Is he saying simple words?”, they were concerned. The doctor asked, “Are you sure he hears well?” I said, “He imitates the clock ticking.” He also babbled incessantly and expressively, there just weren’t any recognizable words in there. A month or so later he spoke his first recognizable word - “rock” - and by age 3 he passed most of his age-mates in terms of vocabulary and sentence complexity, but his enunciation was an issue until sometime during kindergarten. He did manage to start making the s and r sounds in time to avoid a trip to the speech therapist, but only just.Given that every child is unique, what should another parent who has a child with delayed speech take from this?First, speak to your child often. Watch to see if your child responds correctly to simple commands: “Bring me your shoes. Put your toy away.”Second, listen. Does your child string together a variety of sounds? Does he or she speak with inflection?If your child seems to be hearing and is babbling fluently, then just be patient. Late speech is actually rather common even among children who don’t have any organic issues.

I wouldn’t generalize to ‘people in the financial industry’, as there are a variety of approaches.
