If Greek gods had honest slogans, what would they be?

The Greek gods did have slogans, called epithets or titles. Let’s honestly represent these. I’ve added the translations of their usually given names; tentative translations marked with a <?>, folk translations current in ancient Greece with a <*>. These translations prioritize meaning over form; assume everything including “patron of Y” was some pithy one-word title that doesn’t have a straight translation.Zeus; (Ζεύς, heaven) friend to the stranger, guarantor of oaths, of marriage, of friendship, stirrer of the clouds, thunderer on high, deep-dwelling, the great, lover of women, the self-generated, the universal cause, the king, father of gods and men.Hera; (Ήρα, season of time?) respected, with golden garments, giver of life, untameable, the virgin, the grown woman, the widow, of cunning will, white-handed, full-eyed.Poseidon; (Ποσειδών, earth’s husband) shaker of the earth, father, patron of springs and lakes, of the sea, of horses and bulls, architect, blue-haired, of great strength.Demeter; (Δήμητρα, earth mother) feeder of all mortals, of many fruits, seeder, sower, thresher, friendly to children, desirable, feeder of grain, verdant, universally providing.Athena; (Αθηνά, divine mind*) the bright-eyed, the maiden, brave with a spear, warlike, guardian of the city, of craftsmen, of judges, tamer of horses, who has beautiful hair, alike to her father.Apollo; (Απόλλων, festival/assembly ?*, destroyer/purifier*) the pure, the prophetic, the bringer of plague, the far-shooting archer, the twin, the healer, guide of the muses.Artemis; (Άρτεμις, bear?, butcher*, untouched*) lady of animals, hunter, willow-bound, beautifully crowned, lover of bows, guardian of childbirth.Ares; (Άρης, ruin) lover of arms, killer of mortals, eater of men, cruel, shield-splitter, terrible, sacker of cities, patient of hand, father of victory.Aphrodite; (Αφροδίτη, brilliantly shining?, born from foam*) of Cyprus, celestial, popular, smile-loving, keen of mind, compassionate, with shapely buttocks, bride, lady, whore, delayer of age, killer of men.Hephaestus; (Ήφαιστος, …) the lame, the strong-handed, the amphidexterous, the worker, the unwearying flame.Hermes; (Ερμής, road sign) messenger of the gods, guide of souls, giver of good fortune, patron of public places, of herdsmen, harmless.Hestia; (Εστία, hearth) …no titles of note. Let’s go for something else instead:Instead of marriage Zeus the Father gave her a fair prize/and she took the choicest boon and sat in the middle of the house/In all the temples of the gods she has her share of honour/and for all mortals she is of all the gods the most venerated. (The Homeric Hymns)

What are your core beliefs as a Pentecostal? How does someone become a member of your church?

A2A. As it says in the byline, I was raised Pentecostal, we went to the Pentecostal church when I was a kid until I was in my 20’s. Specifically these were Assemblies of God and Church of God but the Pentecostal variants are interchangeable in terms of their theology. They do differ somewhat in how they are organized— if you want official paperwork that says “I am a member of the Victory Assembly of God church” there is a way to do that, details depend on the specific organization and congregation. Honestly, they’re just happy if you show up, but if you want a leadership position— youth group leader, Sunday school teacher, deacon or elder type roles— they’ll ask for some statement of faith, baptism by immersion, and a few other things. A typical list is MembershipIts hard nowadays to say what American Pentecostals believe in, they are so politicized by the Republican party they are far more concerned that you hate “liberals” than any sort of real commitment to Christ. But theoretically, Pentecostals place special emphasis on the “gifts of the Holy Spirit” hence the name. Acts 2 - Wikipedia . Speaking in tongues, healing prayer, prophesy, these are some of the”gifts.” Pentecostals, at least theoretically, underscore God’s personal relationship with the believer. Liturgy of any kind is not required, the only real must-have ritual is immersion baptism. Things like “laying on of hands” “raising hands in worship” ,communion ( every once in a while) are more gestures than anything: God doesn’t really care, but it does show to others your faith (or at least, your conservative credentials). Pentecostals are likely to know far more about the bible than most denominations, sometimes almost as well as an atheist.I no longer attend any sort of church, and if I did, it certainly wouldn’t be Pentecostal. I have never met such a hypocritical miserable people in my life. “You shall know them by their fruits” yeah well I’ve had a whole truckload shown to me. Perhaps you’ll have a better experience.

What is the history of the festival of Raksha Bandhan? There is no mention of it in Hindu scriptures, then why do Hindus celebrate this festival?

Once upon a time when Indra had been defeated by the Asuras, he prepared the reprisal attack, and before he set out to do battle Sachi, his consort, tied a holy thread or amulet around his wrist. Then Indra, the king of gods, gained victory over the asuras by the power of this protection (Raksha means “protection”) and recovered his celestial capital of Amaravati.Since this festival falls 8 days before the birthday celebrations of Krishna - when I was a child attending Divine Life satsangs, this was always celebrated as “Gita Week” and was dedicated to the study of the Bhagavad Gita. The major festival celebrated on this day is UPAKARMA - an exclusive Brahmin festival. The sages organised four major festivals one for each of the four Varnas. For Brahmins it is Upakarma, for Kshatriyas - Vijaya Dasami, for Vaishyas - Divāli and for Śūdras it is Holi. The three latter festivals of course are celebrated by everyone but their specific focus is on the needs and entertainment of the specific group named. In South India non-Brahmins do not celebrate this festival but in North India Raksha bandhana is a sibling festival in which girls tie the protective threads to the wrists of their brothers and cousins and in turn get a present. The Upakarma festival is the opening of the Vedic academic year. In ancient times the real Brahmins used to begin the annual cycle of Vedic study on this day. The Rig and Sama Veda Upakarmas are done on different days so this particular one is for the followers of the Yajur Veda mainly. The assembled Brahmins first make a public confession of their misdemeanours during the past year and ask the assembly of scholars to forgive them for their failure to live up to the high KPI’s expected of Brahmins, and to promise to reform themselves in the coming year. It is like an Ongoing Professional Development course - in which self-assessment is done and a resolve is made to improve and to live up to their professional status. It is also the day on which young boys are initiated with the Upanayana. The day after is known as gāyatri Japa - in which the gāyatri mantra is recited 1000 times to atone for lapses during the year. But sadly with the loss of Sanskrit knowledge and Dharma-sikshan - it has become a mere charade and tokenism - and entails only the changing of the sacred thread. Very few attendees actually understand the import of the Sankalpa (statement of confession) that is made. But for the delight of the readers I shall include the English translation here in full because it highly educative of the standard expected from Brahmins.“With the sanction of the Supreme Being, and for the absolution of all sins; due to ignorance from time immemorial, we are wandering about in this great ocean of Samsara, impelled by our diverse karmas; becoming involved in diverse circumstances, and being born again and again in various species. At last, due to some specific act of great merit, we have been born as human beings, and moreover we have been granted the great privilege of becoming dvijas. In this birth and in our previous births, we have committed a great number of offences, which have caused us to become degraded; major offences, acts that have been forbidden by Shastra; during childhood, youth and adulthood; in the various levels of consciousness, while awake and while dreaming; wittingly and unwittingly, and in delusion; by our actions, speech and mind; through all our senses and through our acts of daily living; an enormous number of sins have been committed such as eating with the unsuitable people, eating contaminated food, destruction of trees and plants, discussion of unbeneficial literature, disrespecting elders, community leaders and priests, and failing to remain neutral and balanced, committing transgressions knowingly once and unknowingly many times, offences done repeatedly, deeds that have spiritually contaminated us, and made us unworthy of our status as dvijas. We have done those deeds which we should not have, and refrained from doing what we should have; miscellaneous sins, major sins and even mortal sins. For the absolution of all the nine types of sins; two of the mind — believing in false doctrines, thinking badly of others, three of speech: lying, slander and gossip and four of body: taking that which was not given, causing injury to other living beings, not rendering assistance to others in time of need and sexual misconduct. And for the additional offences of sacrificing for those who were unworthy of participating, for accepting gifts from unworthy donors, eating forbidden items, for enjoying forbidden pleasures, drinking forbidden drinks, for the absolution of all these sins, in the presence of all the 33 devas, in the company of Brahmins and Scholars we shall now perform this Upakarma rite consisting of sanctification, and offering of libations to the Rishis and the changing of the sacred thread.
