I served in VF-2 (F-14 fighter squadron) 1989–1991. Women didn’t serve on carriers then (combat ships), only on supply ships back then. I heard all the stories of women on ships getting pregnant or prostituting themselves, but I never witnessed this first hand myself. So I really had no idea how truly pervasive these events were. Likely the few examples were widely discussed putting a bad rap on the rest of the hard-working female sailors. No charges have been brought against them, including five female sailorsIgnoring any prostitution, pregnancy is simply a hugely disruptive activity that men simply can’t do. And I’m sure the Navy has had way more trouble with sexual harassment since they allowed women on ships. Probably less often the woman’s fault, but still hugely disruptive. How much of an officers time is now delegated to policing harassment behavior? Enlisted people are often functioning barely above high school maturity.In my job, we very commonly ran down to AIMD on the carrier level, grabbed 50 pound aircraft boxes, hoisted them on our shoulders, hiked up 3–4 flights of nearly vertical stairs and then ran them across the flight deck to lift them up into waiting aircraft. Oh yeah, my arms would burn and feel like rubber sometimes, but I was in damn good shape back then. Could women do this? Well some, not all. Hell not all men probably could. But in combat there simply would be jobs women couldn’t do as effectively. Then again there might be some jobs women can do better than men.Anyway, I get back to the shore after Westpac, I’m back in the VF-2 hangar, which just happened to be shared by the Top Gun aggressor squadron. So I’m walking out to my Tomcat one day on the flight line, and a female Navy airdale calls out asking for my help, she needs help lifting some box into an F-16. Well me being a young tough stud / asshole, I just pick up the box myself, slide it into the F-16 without a seconds hesitation, and walk off to my own aircraft.At the time I was annoyed, thinking in my sexist mind if she can’t do the job, she shouldn’t be in the military! But that was chauvinistic, she might have been a great tech, and the aggressor squadron didn’t go in combat. And frankly I probably blew a huge opportunity to flirt in my stupidity! But then I can’t remember anymore if she was cute or not, odds weren’t good! I’m not saying I was that handsome, but I could count the number of attractive women I met in the Navy on one hand. ;-D
