As always, here’s my politically incorrect and rebellious answer: Abnormally intelligent. As in, they were absolutely born with a lot of talent.The amount of logical comprehension, abstract thinking, creativity, analytical thinking, problem solving, analogical thinking, and many other skills, required to do even college level math is pretty high. A lot of people who are generally considered to be pretty smart struggle in college level math, even when investing considerable time and effort.Now extrapolate that to the Ph.D. level. Graduate courses require an entirely different level of abstraction, complexity, and conceptual depth. But more importantly, you have to actually construct new math.Creating new math 100 years ago would have required insane levels of creativity, mathematical depth, etc.. But now, with no low-hanging fruit available, this new math has to be built upon layers and layers of very deep theories, and in a way such that it provides fresh connections to these theories while maintaining relevancy. Unbelievably challenging. I don’t know how people do it.I don’t really believe in the IQ metric. I think that IQ measures only raw information processing, and intelligence is built upon so much more than that.But suppose we have a very effective metric for intelligence, and that the population is tested using this metric. I bet that the average percentile of math Ph.D.’s from reasonably good universities (say, the top 150 in US) would be under [math]1\%.[/math]Another thing: It is not possible for everyone to get a PhD in mathematics. People love to make claims that everyone can be a John Von Neumann John von Neumann - Wikipedia.Not only is this claim blatantly false, but it’s actually very insulting to people who have dropped out of math Ph.D.’s and even math undergraduate majors. It suggests that the dominant difference between success and failure in mathematics is effort and work ethic. Nope, just plain false.Does this mean that people can’t improve their math skills? Hell no. People can absolutely improve their math skills quite a bit with effort and hard work.
