I was there for the whole thing.It was the 90's and Adobe was doing well. In addition to the Systems department which handled the Postscript business there was an Applications group which had Photoshop and Illustrator.John Warnock had the idea that every document that was ever printed, or ever would be printed, could be represented in a document. This was not an unreasonable idea since Postscript was designed for this purpose and Adobe also had some code from Illustrator that would handle the fonts and graphics and code from Photoshop to display images. So, Warnok started a project (the Carousel project) on his own initiative to pursue his idea that eventually the whole Library of Congress could be represented in an archival electronic format.In the beginning he could only get part time help from programmers in the applications division - Mike Pell, Ken Grant, Mike Diamond. The project was progressing slowly so the head of the division (Eric Zocker?) started a search for a new programmer to handle the project full time.Alan Tracey Wootton had transitioned from programming at JPL to full time programming and was looking to leave LA and be more professional in Silicon Valley. He got the job and moved to Cupertino.Soon there was a demo and then a team developed to produce UI for the various platforms - Mac, Windows, DOS, and 'nix. The demo code progressed into cross-platform code to handle most of the internal data structures to support the UI projects. There were also people writing print-drivers to create documents through the printing process on all platforms.By this point the original demos were re-written into a file format that would contain the fonts, vector graphics, and images - this would be the second file format for the project. However, there were requirements that were not being met. Requirements like forward and backwards compatibility, streaming large documents through a printer driver where the printer driver has no idea how many pages there will be, and opening a 1000 page document and being able to jump directly to the 500th page without reading the whole file.Peter Hibberd had written a demo of an 'object oriented file format' so Richard Cohn and Alan Wootton went to work trying to adapt his work for use on the Carousel project. After many weeks of struggle it was decided that adapting his work was going to be more work than writing new code and that some of the 'object oriented' concepts were not applicable since it was finally becoming obvious that a key-value format was going to be part of the solution. This was the third file format.Bob Wulff, the manager of the project, told Richard and Alan to 'go away' and to not come back until there was a file format! The next Monday Richard and Alan started meeting at Richard's house in Menlo Park instead of going to work in Mountain View (where Google is now). By the end of Thursday, Richard and Alan had described data structures and concepts for a file format on many pieces of paper. Alan went home, pulled 4 overnights in a row and came back to Adobe on Monday with the fourth file format written and working in the current code. This file format became known as PDF.

I use Linux as my daily driver. Currently I use Ubuntu 16.04.3 LTS and its great.But the ONLY time or thing that keeps me from using Linux is when a bank or the government asks me to “fill in this form in adobe pdf format online, sign and then upload back to site”. I have tried 20 times with Linux and there is almost always a problem with using non-adobe open source pdf apps or some problem with “adobe security” or somehow the government or bank just wont support a pdf file being updated and uploaded via Linux and Firefox or Linux and Chromium.That is the only time I have any issues. Even running a Windows 10 in VM in Linux I seem to have some tiny issues that somehow makes it difficult with either “java void” errors or their website not support something.Linux or WindowsWhat about dual-boot?But when I was running dual-boot, I had the best of both worlds and I could just boot into Windows and easily fill in the pdf using adobe and upload and usually there were no problems “filling in” official forms and applications. The I would reboot into Linux and use Ubuntu as my daily driver…and with Linux I do not worry about viruses and security as much as I would on Windows. And my laptop runs much faster on Ubuntu than Windows.

You are misinformed. Linux does not lack programs that support the Adobe PDF format or lack programs like MS Office or lack games in general!On Linux there is plenty of support for the Adobe PDF format. There are many PDF creators and PDF readers. In the Mint Software Manager, a search for “PDF” brought up at least 100 different packages! Ex:Mint OS has Libra Office Writer can create and export documents in PDF format. I do not think MS Word can do this, but I have not used it in recent years.Mint OS has the Xreader PDF viewer and there are others like Evince.On Linux, for Office applications there is:Libre / Open Office. This is a FANTASTIC application that by default, uses the Open Document Format - ODF and can read and write many other formats including MS Office formats.Abiword word processor and the Gnumeric spreadsheet applications. These are GREAT applications especially for older low-resource systems.On Linux there is no version of FIFA Soccer or the popular First Person Shooter - FPS game Fortnite. However there:Is PlayOnLinux, a front-end for the Windows Emulater - WINE, which allows for the running of Windows applications including games on Linux.Is DosBox which allows for the running of older MS Dos applications including games on Linux.Are literally thousands of Linux games including:Board games Ex: Many versions of Chess, Mahjongg, Solitare, Yahtzee and Texas-Holdem-Poker.First Person Ex: OpenArena, Nexuiz, Sauerbraten and AssaultCube.Real-time strategy Ex: WarZone2100.Turn-based strategy Ex: Wesnoth, HedgeWars and Konquest.Simulation and racing Ex: SuperTuxKart.
