I remember reading in his Hit refresh book, he had written that, after failing in JEE, he had a choice between BIT Mesra EEE and MIT Manipal ECE.Apparently, he chose MIT Manipal ECE.But during his time, MIT Manipal was just a state based college and Manipal never had privilege to conduct its own entrance test. It came under Mangalore University.It was completely based on Mangalore University.Even, I forgot my exact rank, after reading this question, I searched my admission order to see what rank I had secured.

I was in my internship when I got word one call night that three patients had just arrived via Airevac for the gyn-oncology service and I needed to do their intake physicals and admit them to the service. I tracked them down and two were simple, returning patients coming back for follow up but one was a woman of about thirty five with newly diagnosed cervical cancer. Her husband was a squadron commander in a fighter wing in Europe and a fast burner, meaning he was being promoted as fast as possible and likely to reach general as soon as legal.Needless to say, Betty was scared and wanted to know what was going to happen and frankly I wasn’t certain because we had not fully evaluated her yet. I did a simple physical and wrote admission orders and talked a while. L&D was quiet, and we hit it off. For the next two and a half years as Betty fought her cancer whenever she was admitted I would drop by to see her. I got to know her husband and kids. After the two and a half years she was losing her battle. I was senior resident in house meaning I might get three or four hours of sleep but I told Betty’s nurses that if she died in the night they were to call me not the intern as usual. At about 0300 the nurses called me and I went over and confirmed Betty’s death and closed her eyes. I called her family and the Chief of Gyn, our oncologist ,and we all met in a short while in the doctors office on the floor the Chief, Betty’s husband and her two teenagers and hugged and wept. Losing my friend hurt and some advise not getting close to patients but I learned much from Betty and her family and would accept the pain any day.
