What do I think about it?I read it once and got kind of worked up about it.I read it a second time, laughed my ass off, cracked a beer and went back to my homework. He has a few good points that I’ll make sure to highlight, but for those who are curious, here is his entire list of gun control proposals. I’ll pass.Tier 1 – Basic hunting rifles and handgunsPass a background check-Already existsPass a basic hunting/firearm safety class-State dependent, already exists, worthy goalProvide a receipt for an appropriately-sized gun locker, or trigger lock per registered gun.-Already done for every gun I’ve ever purchased, and most gun stores give them away.Tier 2 – Semi-automatic riflesHave a Tier 1 license for at least 1 year-For what purpose should I be forced to own a tier one gun (which includes a semi-automatic pistol, which again, is the most commonly used murder implement in America) to own a 10–22 rifle?Be at least 21 years of age- Old enough to fight and die, not old enough to crack a beer or shoot a gun. Gotcha. Very few murders are committed by people with a semi-auto rifle under the age of 21 annually, so it’s restricting the rights of millions for a few cases.Pass an advanced firearm safety class- Yea, what’s it going to cover? How to really not shoot yourself? Firearms safety is pretty straightforward. Keep your barrel pointed somewhere safe, safety on, finger off the trigger. Y’all are welcome.Tier 3 – Advanced and automatic weaponryMaintain current restrictions and definitions (National Firearms Act of 1934)-Nothing about the 1986 laws, so that’s a plus.Ban high-capacity magazines-For the love of God, high capacity magazines don’t aid in the commission of a crime.Require submission of fingerprints and DNA to the FBISubmit to a gun locker inspection to ensure it can house the weapons. Ring Ring, it’s the US Constitution calling. Yea, it’s under your foot.Undergo yearly refresher trainings on the use of these firearms.Anyone with a history of violence, domestic abuse, or violent mental illness would be restricted from receiving a license. Good idea, and already a thing.Those who currently own any firearms will:Be grandfathered in with their current license, and for the 1-year requirement if they decide to apply for a Tier 2 license Oh goody, I can keep my rights?Receive a one-time “Good Gun Owner” tax credit for adhering to the additional requirements implemented by the new system It’s not a bad idea, but I disagree with the requirements so.Be allowed a tax write-off for the purchase of any equipment required to adhere to the new standards Does a new gun count? Asking for a friend.Be allowed to register any currently unregistered firearm without facing any penalties.Individual states will determine their concealed carry/open carry laws, and reciprocity will not be federally enforced. However, a concealed or open carry license in one state would satisfy all licensure requirements in all states. This could actually be helpful for those people owning non-registered machine guns, although I wouldn’t register them. Federal reciprocity would be nice though.Prohibit the manufacture and sale of bump stocks, suppressors, incendiary/exploding ammunition, and (yes, this is currently legal) grenade launcher attachments. How many people have died from being shot with a grenade launcher? We use them to shoot flares. Ditto for exploding ammoCreate federal safety guidelines for gun manufacture and distribution, similar to federal car safety requirements, with strict penalties for the violation of these guidelines. No idea what this entails, therefore no comment.Encourage gun manufacturers to implement designs that prevent interchanging parts that alter the functionality of the firearm. This goes back to the whole “No idea how guns work” thing. Swapping a barrel changes the functionality of a firearm. Swapping a lower and upper changes the functionality of a firearm.Implement a federal buyback program for anyone who wants to voluntarily give up their firearm. I mean I guess. I don’t really see it happening though.Invest in innovative technology that would make firearms harder to fire for non-owners of the gun, and create a federal, bipartisan panel to determine when technological innovations are advanced and reliable enough to be included in manufacturing safety requirements.- Awesome. So now my brother can’t shoot my shotgun anymore. You’ve got to be fucking kidding me.As stated here, invest in a more robust mental health infrastructure. This will help to identify and treat people with mental health illnesses that make them prone to violence.Increase funding to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, and drastically increase funding to the US Department of Veterans Affairs Suicide Prevention efforts.Initiate and fund mindfulness programs in schools and correctional facilities, which have been demonstrated to reduce violent behavior.Invest heavily in law enforcement training to de-escalate situations involving firearms.These last four are all ideas worthy of credit. But really, this is drawn up by a guy who thinks solving the US’s problems starts with handing out 3 trillion dollars a year to people, and it pretty much shows the same lack of forethought I would expect.
