PDF Editor FAQ

How are German WWII veterans treated today?

It’s not an easy question to answer because very few veterans of WW2 now survive. But I grew up in Germany in the 1960s and 1970s, and most of the male adults around us were in one way or another WW2 veterans. On the whole the war didn’t feature much in conversation with them, but we were all very aware of what had happened. If I recall, all my male school teachers were veterans.Clearly veterans did not enjoy the same social standing that their counterparts would have had in, say, Britain and the United States. For all that, they were not seen as Nazis (as Christopher Geraldt quite wrongly suggests), but just as participants in something that should never have happened; many of them would have seen themselves that way. But as the West German state developed, some care was taken to argue that the soldiers and officers of the Wehrmacht (with some exceptions of course) deserved recognition for their sacrifices, and there were veterans’ associations and similar bodies (now largely defunct). The West German (now German) army, the Bundeswehr, was initially led and/or advised by officers all of whom had fought in the Wehrmacht, and some of them (e.g. Fld Marshall Erich von Manstein) were given funerals with the new state’s military honours.Obviously what they took part in was a terrible period in history with horrific aims, but most were just conscripted soldiers who fought for what they saw as their country. Most people recognise that.
