Mr. PerfectOur patrol division commander thought of himself as a spit and polished leader. He wore a class A uniform every day to work—medals and all. His leather gear and shoes were always polished to a mirror shine.The only problem was that he was a bit of an ass. He saw himself as the consummate professional who would write long detailed memos using a lot of obscure words that only confused the group. He posted transfer orders on Friday afternoons just before he left for the weekend. He did this, so most of the working shifts would have the weekend to calm down before he fielded complaints on Monday.This particular memo was three pages in length and transferred about twenty officers, between platoons and assignments. If you’ve never been in this position, getting moved is like having your world turned upside down.You’ve been promising to go to little Johnny’s piano recital, but now you have to work. You also have to put in for different vacation days and guess what…you're now working Christmas day!To say this pissed a lot of people off was an understatement.Our commander always personally typed these orders on his stationery and signed them in the chief's absence. He must have been in a hurry on that Friday afternoon. The memo contained at least ten misspelled words and several grammatical errors.Several officers removed the three-page transfer order. Wearing rubber gloves, they used a red felt tip marker to make corrections.The transfer order was reposted on the board for all to see. The memo looked like a red splotched crime scene with large circles and bright red arrows and a huge WTF followed by a question mark.Sometime later, during the same weekend, a McDonald's application was obtained and neatly typed with all the commander's information filled in.On Monday, both the chief and commander got a heads-up from the day shift sergeant. They both came down and viewed the memo and McDonald's application. They were removed and placed in an evidence bag.Yes, internal affairs launched a full-scale investigation. Almost every patrol officer's fingerprints, who worked that weekend, were on the memo. It was reasonable as they all handled the memo as they read it. That is except for the three perpetrators who wore gloves. I was concerned that they would figure it out by the lack of fingerprints, but they never did.The patrol commander eventually became an unpopular chief for a couple of years. During his term as chief, he continued to bounce people around using transfers like weapons to punish those he didn’t like.There was little that we lowly patrol officers could do to fight back. But photocopies of that old marked-up memo and McDonald’s application kept mysteriously showing up on the patrol board for years.

Below the level of assistant manager, most McDonald's applicants are unlikely to use a resume to apply for a position. McDonald's being entry-level employment, it really isn't required.If you were to submit a resume, the manager may consider that you aren't a fit as you unlikely to remain at the job for any length of time.

My favorite saying in Internal affairs was “It is, what it is,” meaning I can’t change the facts of a case as much as I might want to. If the facts lead to the conclusion that the officer did wrong, then so be it. It wasn't my place to like or dislike the outcome, just to be honest.On patrol, the saying I heard most frequently was “It’s better to be judged by twelve than carried by six,” Meaning if you hesitate to use deadly force, you may end up dead. Only today, I would say, judged by one and not twelve, as most officers choose a bench trial where the judge alone decides the officer's fate. This removes much of the media-fueled emotion and keeps the trial about the facts.The next most common saying on patrol was, “A good cop is never cold, wet, or hungry.” This dates back to the walking patrol days. The meaning was that if an officer took good care of the neighborhood they patrolled, the citizens would take good care of the officer. Sheltering them from the rain and cold and feeding them. There’s nothing like a good foot-patrol officer to restore the citizen police partnership which used to exist.As a supervisor, my saying was, “If you can’t do the job right, McDonald's is hiring.” I had little patience for lazy officers or lame excuses. I kept McDonald's applications in my office to hand out. If you received one in your mail slot, you knew you were on thin ice.In narcotics, my favorite saying was, “If it doesn’t feel right, walk away.” Meaning there is no undercover assignment worth getting killed over.
