In that regard, they don't look for students with MOOC certifications and/or student who took summer school courses per se.Harvard does not look for a long checklist of extracurricularsHarvard does not look for students who blow off their senior year classes thinking it doesn't matter since colleges don't see those grades (I actually get asked this question a lot)Harvard does not look for students who do not show any self initiative. The Harvard name will get you an interview you at any company... but it will NOT guarantee you actually getting a job offer - you have to do that yourself.People want to go to Harvard for the same reason people want to go to "the big cities" like New York, Tokyo, Los Angeles, London. Harvard is a place where "stuff happens" and "people of unique abilities often end up" and the place "people achieve their dream."In reality, students attending Harvard get a pretty good education, good post-graduate academic and career opportunities, a great alumni network and a nice looking diploma. Harvard graduates succeed because they were already some of the top minds in the world before they were even accepted. Brought together, given more opportunities to collaborate and learn, and it's not surprising that many do well after school.My key point here is about agency... going to Harvard doesn't bring success in life. I don’t personally know anyone who got a 2400, but I do know some people who got 2300+ (which is essentially treated the same as 2400) and were rejected by many Ivy Leagues. They were obviously pretty disappointed and didn’t know what they did wrong, because they also participated in a variety of extracurriculars and took the hardest courses in school, while still maintaining a stellar GPA.Once you get to a certain score, which I believe is 2250 for the top Ivy Leagues, scoring better than that doesn’t mean for anything. The school realizes you are smart enough to do well in their courses and keep up with the competition. A lot of immigrant parents (from India, China, etc) don’t realize this (at least when I was applying to schools) because in their countries, college admissions are almost purely based on scores and every point matters. After SAT scores/GPA, colleges here are looking for students who stand out in some other way.Schools like Harvard and Yale are looking for students who not only achieve high academically (shown by high grades and SAT scores) but also have a passion and talent in a certain area and have shown accomplishment in it. For example, someone who has played chess since elementary school and has won national and international tournaments, organized many competitions for charity, etc. It’s a myth that there’s a checklist of things you need to do, like play a sport, play an instrument, etc; you just need to show deep achievement in one activity and that will make you stand out.
