Can China control this Coronavirus epidemic?

(Edited to add in timeline)We believe China can and will succeed.“(China is) fully confident and capable of fighting the epidemic. The long-term trend of China’s economic development will not change.”China has declared war and ‘over-reacted’ to the epidemic which few nations would have done.“No room for relaxation in key measures or key areas,” said Xi.World has won against scary epidemics before, why not this?In fact, China has demonstrated its efficacy.Ask WHO - praised “China for its swift response in identifying the genome sequence and putting strong measures in place to curb the epidemic”.Ask UN:Ask Xi Jinping - “Chinese people are engaged in a “serious struggle” and the epidemic “is a devil and we cannot allow the devil to hide.”Ask Trump- “Great discipline is taking place in China, as President Xi strongly leads what will be a very successful operation. We are working closely with China to help!”“We have adopted the most comprehensive and strictest prevention and control measures ... We have declared a people’s war against the epidemic through prevention and control.”“Why China has so many virus!” PLEASE. List of epidemics In 500 years with more than 230 entries, only 5 listed from/ in China. Stop the xenophobia! For those with sense, empathy, and a heart, China thank you. For the bashers and gloaters (WSJ - ‘The Real Sick Man of Asia’), China don’t have time for their arrogant sh*t now.p/s: See the big guy with the MCGA cap? LOL.#FightVirus hashtag on Twitter - Worth a view, so many wonderful examples why I am proud of China and the many nations that supports its fight.31 nurses shaved to fight covid19. (No time to wash hair).Let us believe. Have confidence in China’s strength & resilience!武汉加油!中国加油!AdditionalEdited/ The Timeline - not perfect, no one probably can in a new viral outbreak, but China did try hard and fast. eg. once China’s CDC sent a team to investigate, WHO was confirmed the next day, and genome shared within a week. Based on the measures taken, WHO did say ‘incredible and unprecedented.”WHY China can?One united people:One united nation: and a city shouting ‘Jia You’.Toiling non stop, constructing hospitals, disinfecting cities, making food, delivering. Many factories shifted focus to support fight - even bra, textile, etc.16 provinces mobilised to help Hubei. 11,000 moving front line, PLA leading the way:They put their red thumb prints, then tell their parents not to worry.Bravery and commitment, facing virus every minute - 1800 infected, some martyred in the line of duty, policemen, medical and staff.Support from all over the world:From many world leaders, that know China is doing its best. From many nations and cities:Thank you. When it spreads beyond Hubei, the potency drops, and the fatality drops below 1%. Although highly infectious in Wuhan, the correct comparison is not SARS or MERS but more a highly infectious bad flu that spreads faster but kills less, mostly old or with health illness burden.Shutting down wet market, major events and stop gatherings. (eg. Police smashed mahjong tables when groups still gathered without masks).Locking Wuhan and then 11 cities. Assigning 16 provinces to help 16 cities.Informing and educating an entire nation to cooperate and combat the spread - isolating, masking, taking temperatures, canceling events. After investigation, they identified the genome within a week and shared the DNA code with WHO and the world. China shared so world expertise can look into the virus, and to make test kits and vaccines. When central govt took over, it commanded a bold strategy to fight the illness.China then called in top SARSs expert to take charge of the battle. Dr Zhong Nanshan, who won fame for combating the SARS epidemic in 2003 said the peak should come in middle or late February, followed by a plateau and decrease, basing the forecast on modelling, recent events and government action.Tough measures implemented, people isolated.Hospitals in extreme stress, many medical staff fighting long hours are infected, some died. 11,000 medics moved to front line to fight. (Parents sending off their oft single children to the front line were brave but teary. As the medical convoys moved past gates into Wuhan, guards saluted their bravery and commitment).Patrick’s “Then China amazed the world to build 1000-bed-hospital-in-10-days, and more to relieve the enormous pressure on current hospitals and help the people.Ahmad Razi: “This hospital will be remembered as a symbol of the Chinese nation's STRONG and unbeatable SPIRIT in the future.”Patrick's answer to Is the Chinese government releasing accurate information regarding the coronavirus?US-flu-cases-climb-to-15-million-with-54-pediatric-deaths-recorded-in-201920-seasonWill-the-Wuhan-virus-and-the-subsequent-handling-of-it-lead-to-the-collapse-of-the-Chinese-Communist-Party/Robin-Daverman? Of course not.George shared his views why China will contain this beast - and compare-with various other outbreaksMartinus noted that “2 things that others cannot beat Chinese: Political will/commitment and spirit of unity” China will beat Covid-19.Exploit technology - viral expertise, big data, “close contact” app, robot food delivery, driverless disinfectant trucks, “10 day” hospital, etc.Leadership of CCP. Many world leaders and ex-statesmen sent their support and encouragement, even Trump think so too: “President Xi strongly leads what will be a very successful operation”.In sum, China had put in enormous sacrifice and effort in containing the outbreak from the start. She can conquer this beast perhaps by Apr or latest when a nice hot summer beckons. Most will agree, or who do you think can do better with a 50 million province and a fast spreading new virus?See the confidence in her smile, the new face of the Chinese warrior. Fighting!

How many firefighters get cancer? I heard 68% will get cancer at some point in their lifetime. Is this true?

According to the Firefighter Cancer Support Network firefighters are at greater risk of various cancers than the general public.Cancer caused 61 percent of the career firefighter line-of-duty deaths from January 1, 2002, to March 31, 2017, according to data from the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF). Heart disease caused 18 percent of career LODDs for the same period.Cancer caused 70 percent of the line-of-duty deaths for career firefighters in 2016.Firefighters have a 9 percent higher risk of being diagnosed with cancer and a 14 percent higher risk of dying from cancer than the general U.S. population, according to research by the CDC/National Institute for Occupational Health and Safety (NIOSH).The cancers mostly responsible for this higher risk were respiratory (lung, mesothelioma),
GI (oral cavity, esophageal, large intestine), and kidney. In 2013, NIOSH researchers reported a two-fold excess of malignant mesothelioma, a very rare cancer. Put another way, firefighters have a 100 percent increased risk (100 percent = double = 2 times) of getting mesothelioma. Firefighters have a 129 percent increased risk of dying from mesothelioma. A 2006 meta-analysis by Grace LeMasters of 32 firefighter cancer studies noted a two-fold excess for testicular cancer. Firefighters have a 62 percent higher risk of getting esophageal cancer, and they have a 39 percent increased risk of dying from esophageal cancer, according to the NIOSH research. Here’s an overview with some specific additional risks for firefighters noted:testicular cancer - 2.02 times the risk (again: 100% = double = 2 times);mesothelioma - 2.0 times greater risk;multiple myeloma -1.53 times greater risk;non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma - 1.51 times greater risk;skin cancer - 1.39 times greater risk;malignant melanoma - 1.31 times
greater risk;brain cancer -1.31 times greater risk;prostate cancer - 1.28 times greater risk;colon cancer -1.21 times great risk; andleukemia - 1.14 times greater risk.FAQs - Firefighter Cancer Support Network

If you are pro-life, does that only apply to abortions or the death penalty too?

Personally I am pro-life, and would classify myself as being anti-death penalty and anti-abortion.However, I find that there is an important distinction between these, and am opposed to each for different reasons. I do not, for example, believe that nobody should ever be killed for any reason. I think deadly force used as self-defense against reasonable threat of death is justifiable. I also think that a soldier who has volunteered to participate in a nation’s military can be justifiably killed in the line of duty by citizens of a nation that they threaten (in a war). That’s part of that job, that the soldier willingly signed up for.I also think that abortion is justifiable in the circumstance where the unborn child’s development actively threatens the mother’s life, such as in an ectopic pregnancy. For the record, this is a common view among pro-lifers, and this “life of the mother” exception exists universally in all pro-life legislation in modern, developed and democratic nations. However, I believe that abortion in circumstances where the parents engaged in consensual sex and then decided to kill their child to alleviate social, economic, or other burdens that we could reasonably classify as “inconveniences” (even if extreme inconveniences), is not at all justifiable. I have found that neither bodily integrity, nor self-defense, nor the dehumanization of the unborn child are logically sufficient to justify the practice. Not bodily integrity, because the situation of dependence was created through willful action, not self-defense, because a normal pregnancy’s risk of death is unreasonable, and not dehumanization, because scientifically it is clear to us today that the unborn are indeed living humans, and thus human beings.Separately, I also believe that the death penalty is unjustifiable. But this view has nothing to do with abortion, in which we typically see two adults engage in a consensual act that leads to another human now existing in a dependent state, and then those adults kill that human, their own child, though it has committed no crime nor been found guilty in any sort of legitimate due process. In the death penalty, we have a criminal who has been found guilty of a crime, through legal due process, and sentenced to what should normally therefore be an ethical expression of justice. The reason I am opposed to the death penalty is because of the chance that this sentence was in error. There are many, many cases in our justice system where new evidence comes to light and a prisoner is set free after having been incarcerated for years or even decades. DNA testing that did not even exist at the time of the trial has exonerated some inmates. Witnesses recanting evidence and admitting they had lied. Racial prejudices have been exposed which distorted a trial into a misrepresentation of true justice. In all of these cases, we can at least free the prisoner and apologize, atone in what small ways we can. With the death penalty, there is no “oops, sorry”. The accused is killed, and the unjust sentence is unfortunately final. That doesn’t even factor in the how of the death penalty, where we use drugs and methods that are quite clearly torturous and in violation of the Constitutional prohibition against cruel punishment. However, because the drugs paralyze the suffering victim, we simply cannot see the pain, and thus our consciences are perhaps relieved (though in error). But even aside from method, even just the fact of occasional wrongly pronounced judgments is enough for me to oppose the death penalty.Because the reasons for opposition to these two practices are so different, I typically do not like to lump them together. I classify myself generally as being pro-life in the sense of being anti-abortion, and separately would also consider myself anti-death-penalty. I would list abortion first as my pro-life stance, if for no other reason than there are over 600,000 unborn children killed by abortion each year[1], whereas there have been around 28 inmates executed last year[2]. Of those 28, some, if not most or even possibly all, were guilty of the crimes of which they had been accused. Of the 600,000+ unborn children killed, 100% were innocent of any crime. It is plainly obvious which is the greater issue facing our country, and thus which issue I prioritize with my stance.Protecting the Defenseless - The Lifeguard InitiativeFootnotes[1] Abortion | Data and Statistics | Reproductive Health | CDC[2] Executions Overview
