PDF Editor FAQ

What is the most disrespectful thing someone did to you while you were in the doctor's office?

I'm still upset by this. I went in for treatment for vaginosis. I was sure it wasn't a yeast infection and I had all the symptoms of vaginosis.I told the Nurse Practitioner (that I was seeing for the first time) all of my symptoms. She looked at my chart and asked me to pronounce my last name for her. She asked me where my husband is from. I told her “India.”Her whole demeanor changed after that. She asked me if it was possible that I could have an STD. I was kind of shocked and I said, “No, because I am only with my husband.”She then asked if I was convinced that my husband is faithful. I replied, “Yes, and that has never been a concern.”She continued to argue that a lot of foreign men sleep around and cheat on their wives. By this time my blood was boiling. I said, “Fine. You seem convinced that I don't have simple vaginosis but an STD. Go ahead and test me for STDs, but I'm telling you that my husband is faithful and I do NOT have an STD.”She looked at me with a 'I feel sorry for you' look and told me that she thought it was for the best. She collected her samples and sent me home with a script for antibiotics.Later that week, I was feeling much better and I got a call from the NP who told me in a very sulky voice that my all the STD tests were negative. I said, “I told you that it would be and you didn't believe me, seemingly because my husband is from another country. I will never see you again and you can be sure that I will report this in my patient survey.” She then hung up on me. She never even apologized.I was much nicer than I should have been. However, I did fill out a complaint form as well as leaving a detailed account of my visit on my patient survey.Yes, I was angry on behalf of my husband, but she insulted me, too, by implying that I couldn't possibly have married an honorable guy. I will never visit her again and I have told all of my friends about her. I truly hope that this situation led her to face up to her biases, but I doubt it.P. S. After many years of working in women's health, I do realize that some women do have STDs without realizing it. I'm not against the testing, but the way she handled it AND that she only brought this up after finding out that my husband is not American.

What are the most subtle ways to deceive people with statistics?

They often use charts to deceive people into believing in their agenda. Most people do not read the fine prints, nor do they pay attention to the scale of things. They play tricks with the numbers. Here is an example:If you read this chart, you would think that Planned Parenthood has started performing way more abortions compared to cancer screening and prevention. But look at the numbers. Not labeling the Y-axis is a common trick that people with political agenda use. Here is the same chart with the correctly labeled Y-axis:Somewhat less shocking. Yet this does not tell the entire story, because it pits abortions against cancer screening. However, these are only two of the services that Planned Parenthood performs. Here is a chart that includes all of their services:See that Cancer Screening and Prevention declined, but STD testing and treatment went way up? And how little of our tax dollars they spend on abortions versus all the other services they provide? Here is another chart with all of the other services compared to abortions. Now, when you take the scales of things into consideration, then the original chart really loses its meaning, does it not?And lastly, do not trust a chart with Y-axis not beginning from 0. Or this could happen. This chart make it look like there has been about 1000% increase in the number of abortions by Planned Parenthood, when it fact, the real increase was only about 33%.

To what extent does doctor-patient confidentiality protect the patient?

It protects you from having the general population know about your medical conditions. It is especially important for certain treatments like STD's and psychiatric treatment. On the other hand the doctor must communicate with other doctors and nurses as well as his staff and your insurance company. Certain diseases must be reported by law and suspected child abuse must be reported. Do if a small child comes in with a spiral femur fracture....he ends up with a total body x-ray (to look for other fractures) and a consult is put in to social services. The doctor is responsible for his office staff. No one cares much about anything else. If someone does care about something it is in the chart and a subpoena will get it.
