How do I get to be an intern at Massachusetts Institute of Technology from an Indian college?

Thanks for the A2A.The basic procedure would be to have good grades, good projects and a solid recommendation or two from prior internships and then write a concise but comprehensive letter to a professor whose work you find interesting and matches your skill set and previous experience. Mention all your experiences and skills concisely in your cover letter itself, attach a PDF resume only if the professor demands it.I don't quite get why you wish to intern particularly at MIT, there are a handful of other universities that have equally amazing faculty across engineering. (I'm talking from the point of view of a naïve but interested student). If there is one particular faculty that you are deeply interested in working with (at MIT), the best idea would be to write that to him/her and hope they find you worthy of a summer project. In general, funding largely depends on the faculty you're applying to. You're usually funded for your living expenses there and if you're lucky you get reimbursed for flights/housing too - but then again, I know interns who didn't get any stipend at all.You could apply to other programs which might provide funding (SN Bose Scholarships etc.) according to your field of work.Be positive while applying - your college doesn't matter much, the work you've done there matters more. All the past interns I know at MIT had stellar undergraduate profiles, and usually did excellent work there and also came back with a PhD offer too sometimes.Best of luck!

When do we submit cover letters?

A cover letter should be sent with your resume to apply for an open position. It should not repeat what’s in your resume, but should add information that the hiring manager should know before calling you in for an interview. For example…That you are enrolled in graduate school and how that might require some flexibility with your schedule, or how it will improve your ability as it pertains to the jobThat you will have no need for relocation reimbursement due to your proximity to work or that you already plan to move to the area on your own – in other words, address the fact that your mailing address isn’t local to the companyIf you are not a citizen but you already have a visa or permanent resident status or will need sponsorship to workFluency in a foreign language if it wasn’t a requirement for the job but you are aware that the company has a global reachIf you know that the position requires travel, you can state how much you look forward to traveling, even on short noticeAs a hiring manager, I don’t read cover letters unless the resume has captured my attention. As most resumes will be rejected, it would be a waste of time to read the cover letter first. A cover letter will never change my mind about a resume that isn’t suitable.

If I already live in a neighborhood, and HOA tries to claim it, am I forced to become an HOA member?

When my sister bought her house, she was the third person to buy in the new neighborhood. They signed the papers and started making payments BEFORE the HOA was established, so the HOA was not mentioned in the paperwork.Over the next few years, my sister and her then husband erected a basketball goal, added a covered patio, inground pool, and a large storage/workshop. They’d bought one of the two lots on the very tail end of the cul-de-sac, so their lot was HUGE. They still had way more backyard than most people. They took very good care of their home, yard, etc…the shop was painted to match the house, the basketball goal was kept in tip top shape.Enter the new HOA. My sister declined to join it. They decided to ignore her letter of refusal, and started sending her violation letters for the shop, the basketball goal, the patio, the paint scheme, right down to the dogs they had. (Three is permitted by the city, and we have no breed restrictions.) My sister returned all letters with a copy of the refusal to join letter, along with a copy of the registered mail receipt showing they received it. They started fining her. She kept doing what she was doing, and pulled in an attorney friend who was more than happy to take over. The HOA finally took her to court. Her lawyer countersued, presented all the paperwork to the judge, and the judge not only found in my sister’s favor, but the HOA had to pay ALL of HER attorney fees and had to reimburse her for all the postage fees she paid responding to their letters. She always sent them registered mail. The judge was incensed by the matter, especially when he saw her original letter declining their request that she join the HOA.Do you know that they kept trying to fine her? She sent them copies of the original ruling, and they again ended up in front of a judge. That judge ruled the same as the first one.The third time, the judge yelled at the president of the HOA, the attorneys, and told them if they didn’t leave my sister alone, he’d cite them for harassment. My sister’s attorney said if they continued, she could sue the HOA president, all of the officers, along with the attorneys both professionally and personally for harassment. The HOA left her alone after that. She HAS had to run off some of the HOA snoops she’s caught peeking over her privacy fence trying to see what’s in the backyard, and ended up slapping a restraining order on them. (The HOA had to reimburse her for THAT, too.)I for the life of me don’t understand why people would spend their hard earned money for a home and lot they don’t have control over. No way would I ever live in an HOA controlled community.
