The best way to know is to pull a sample of the oil and send it to a lab.This has become mainstream enough that you can go to a NAPA (National Auto Parts) store and buy an oil analysis kit for around $15.The kit has a plastic jar you fill about 1/2 way with your oil.The rest of the kit is the address to send the jar and paperwork to fill out on what when where on the oil.Send the jar to the lab, not by USPS (illegal) but via UPS or similar.The lab will get in touch with you and tell you what condition your oil is in.Read up on extended drain intervals.Here’s a copy and paste of what I give people I’m helping with this. it’s for trucks but the basics are the same:Extended Drain Intervals for Motor Oil for trucks-----------------------------------------------Every 3000 miles.Instead of changing the entire 20 quarts at every oil change you:Change the filter, then add enough oil to bring it back up to normal level.Use good quality filter that traps particles to 20 microns. NAPA gold series does this.Take a sample of the oil to send to a laboratory for testing.Best if you can sample the oil a few weeks before scheduled service mileage so you can get the lab results back and know if it's time to drop all the oil yet.This can be done by sucking the oil through a thin tube via the dipstick tube.If that's not possible spin off the filter and get the sample.The lab will email or mail you a report with what they found and their suggestions.NAPA stores have the oil analysis kits for this for about $15-20 as part number 4077.The kit is a jar for the oil sample and instructions on how to sample and where to send it.It's illegal to send it via US mail so you'll have to send it UPS or Fed Ex, which costs around $5.Continue this until the lab says it's time to change the oil.Once you see how many times you can change the filter and top up before having to change all the oil you can continue on using that schedule with less frequent testing.--------------------------The oil starts out alkaline (base) and gradually goes acid with use. The lab tests TBN, or total base number, which shows the change from new (alkaline) oil to the oil going acid enough to damage the motor.Other than any signs of too much metal, dirt or antifreeze in the oil, the TBN is the most critical number to watch.Most new oil is somwhere from an 8 to a ten on TBN.
