PDF Editor FAQ

If a service member of the US Military started off as a commissioned officer; dropped said-commission to enlist, and then proceeded to regain his/her commission, how would that work? Would the service member re-commission as their previous rank?

Can you go from enlisted to officer— Yes, instances too numerous to list. It is done if they fit the needs of the service. But once passed over 2 times, you have almost no chance of returning to active duty in your old commission. Passed over 2 times, you are probably 10 years in, and topped out; many return to the Reserves, or to the Guard. Can you go from officer to enlisted? It happens in the Guard. It's a blow to the ego to be passed over for promotion, or Released from Active Duty. So, they resign the commission, and once separated they can enlist. Most guys I know took a RIF in stride especially if it happened before their 20 years. In some cases if they were O-5 and needed for technical reasons, they were allowed to go warrant officer, W2.On retirement day they go right back to their highest rank with the retirement benefits there of. The years of enlisted service count for longevity, and the pay and all other benefits are at your highest rank of actual service. The described sequence, I have never observed. The retirement letter sent to Officers who are a non-select for promotion has an option to resign commision and go enlisted. Send the following letter:"I am a Regular Army Officer and desire to resign my commission to enlist in the Active Army. I understand that I must be separated prior to enlistment to qualify. I also understand that I must submit a resignation IAW AR 600-8-24, paragraph 3-7, to [login to see] , as soon as possible. Failure to submit a resignation prior to separation will result in discharge."

How long does it take a promotion from E3 to E4 in the U.S Army as an active duty? Does it include the time in the BCT and AIT? Thank you.

AR 600–8–19 is the regulation you need.pg. 21, decentralized promotions.automatic promotion: 24 months time in service, 6 months time in grade.with waiver: minimum of 18 months time in service, 3 months time in grade.it does include your BCT/AIT. If you lose rank (e-3 to e-2) and get promoted back to e-3, your old time as an E-3 will not count to time in grade. So if you get promoted back to E-3 at 23 months of service, you have to wait a minimum of 3 months to be even considered for promotion. Both criteria of TIS and TIG must be met.

Can you be promoted from PFC straight to SGT in the army?

No (My answer will be U.S. Army specific, other branches have their own specifics) because you need to meet time in service and time in grade requirements. Each step in rank is basically automatic between E1-E4 as long as you keep your nose clean and stay out of trouble and do your job, your name will come down on the promotion roster that comes out every month. As soon as you become eligible for promotion, you will be on the roster and it is up to your section NCO and the First Sergeant to recommend that you be promoted. Your name will be on that roster for meeting time in service, time in grade to be eligible for E5 and E6. For promotion to E-5, once eligible, you must first attend Basic Leaders Course (BLC) and successfully pass it, then you must appear before the promotion board. A promotion board is normally made up of the first Sergeants of your Battalion(normally 4) and the president of the board is the Battalion Sergeant Major. You will be scored on your uniform and your military bearing and each board member will ask you questions on Drill an Ceremony, general military knowledge and questions related to your specific MOS (job). Once you have finished appearing before the board, your score will be tabulated. That score plus any college credits etc will all be added up, this becomes your promotion points/cutoff score. This is how the amount of Sergeants and Staff Sergeants per MOS is controlled. The less numbers that are needed, the higher the cutoff score, the more needed, the lower the cutoff score.[[e. To SGT must graduate the Basic Leader Course (BLC) before they are eligible for consideration for promotion pin-on to SGT, IAW AR 600-8-19, paragraph 1-29 a (2). f. To SGT primary zone: CPL/SPC with minimum 36 months TIS and 12 months TIG. g. To SGT secondary zone: CPL/SPC with minimum 18 months TIS and 6 months TIG. h. To SGT MLI: CPL/SPC with minimum 48 months TIS and 24 months TIG. i. Soldiers must meet all eligibility criteria IAW AR 600-8-19, Table 3-3. 5. After Soldiers appear on the HQDA Promotion Selection By-Name List, units are required to ensure that Soldiers (SPC/SGT) have a passing record Army Physical Fitness Test on the promotion effective date 1 January 2021, are not flagged, not barred to continued service, graduates of BLC for promotion to SGT, and ALC for promotion to SSG. 6.
