The land in red has been largely untapped for its natural resources. The towns in these parts of the country are not manufacturing hubs like those in Ohio, Michigan, and Indiana. 200 years after places like Utah, Nevada, and Colorado were integrated into the United States, they still do not have the infrastructure to sustain large-scale manufacturing.With technology booming like never before, automation means that the United States is uniquely poised to harvest the richest area of land on earth more efficiently than ever imagined possible. Imagine in 50 years—autonomous mines, oil wells, steel refineries, trains, farms, cargo-haulers (like semi-trucks). None of that was ever available to the Europeans who built their wealth using colonies and mercantilism, while inefficiently scraping out what natural resources were left in Europe.

No one can tell you what would be best for you, but I can share that I’ve lived in Utah about half my life, and I’ve lived in Boca Raton, FL for a couple of years and have traveled and vacationed extensively in Florida.Personally, I like almost everything about living in Utah better than I liked living in Florida. In other words, I think Florida is a great place to visit, but I didn’t like living there nearly as much as I like living in Utah. Here’s my take on the comparisons:- Utah has 4 distinct seasons, which lends a rhythm to life. Florida has two seasons: tourist season and off season, and Florida is a hot and humid hell during the off season, which negates (for me at least) how beautiful the weather can be during the winter.- People in Utah are, generally speaking of course, more likely to be nicer and more actively helpful than in Florida. I’ve loved many of the Utah neighborhoods I’ve lived in. As an Uber driver, I’ve heard from dozens of people (mostly non-LDS) who have moved to Utah how much they love the culture of niceness here.- What you will miss from Florida that you don’t have in Utah is beaches, shelling, the Everglades, Winter weather, and Orlando near enough for weekend trips. What you probably won’t miss are hurricanes, rudeness, a “watch-your-back” culture, crime, department stores that smell like mothballs, yellow tap water, insects, and a nasty, divisive political environment. What you will probably gain is hiking-to-die-for, drinkable tap water, all kinds of outdoor sports, and nicer neighbors.Hope that helps.

In addition to the great answer by Joshua Dance, I would add:- Being named as one of the top 10 best places to live (often #1) in the U.S., by one list or another, in almost every year for the past 20 years- Home of NuSkin, Vivint, Qualtrics, Ancestry.com, Novell, Stephen R. Covey, the Osmonds, Robert Redford, and more- Quality of its tap water (most of the cities in Utah Valley have what is essentially treated mountain spring water coming out of the tap)- Its vibrant entrepreneurial scene. Some articles in national publications are starting to feature Utah (and Utah Valley specifically) as having all of the attributes of Silicon Valley in supporting a thriving startup culture.- For being a Google Fiber City.
