He led the nation in assists and broke the record for career assists at Oklahoma State while in his second season there. He was exceptional at seeing the court and finding openings others would never notice. I once saw him hit this guy with a PERFECT alley-oop from half court. Desmond Mason later won the 2001 NBA Slam Dunk Contest.What was the one thing Oklahoma State fans held against Doug Gottlieb? His free throw shooting. He shot an abysmal 45.7% from the foul line. He was one of the worst free throw shooters in college basketball. That is horrible, but it’s even worse considering he was a point guard not a 7-foot tall center who’s used to shooting from close range.So, Gottlieb was a bad shooter? Nope.At practice before the Big XII tournament, Gottlieb was draining free throws. Minutes later, some of the press started betting he couldn’t hit two in a row. Like others have said, there are physical attributes of the game that affect your ability to hit free throws. An added element is the mental pressure you feel with a stadium full of people watching you. Knowing people are watching the game on TV. Knowing your teammates are relying on you. Knowing your performance could have a multi-million dollar impact on your income. Those are things that don’t factor into you hitting 8-out-of-10 at the YMCA gym during your lunch break.

The entire Native population in the state only comprises about 10%, and Cherokees are a further subset. And there are no counties in Oklahoma with a Native majority.The larger Oklahoma state population skews heavily Republican. And a certain percentage of Natives are conservative anyway. They aren’t politically monolithic.
