The question was How do I get a membership to the National Library and how much is its yearly subscription?All of the many government libraries in Kolkata, like public libraries almost anywhere in the world usually, do not charge any money.However, you must be eligible for membership. The criteria includes that:You must be a currently legal resident of India.You must be over 18 years of age, and must have legal agency over yourself or must always be accompanied by your legal guardian (applicable to those specially-abled, or otherwise unable to have legal agency over self for any other reason).You must have proof of residence like Voter ID Card or Passport.You must be recommended by an elected public representative or a government gazetted officer using their official seal. (This can also be a Head of the Department or a School Principal)Process:Go and collect the membership application form from the security counter at the entrance of the library in the Bhasha Bhobon building of the National Library complex, on any day of the week including Sunday, between 11AM and 7PM, preferably carrying any photo ID card you have since the guards might want to verify before letting you take the form. Like already mentioned at the very beginning, there are absolutely no charges that should be involved.(You will need to sign the same signature on the form too, at the time of collecting the application form.)Fill in the form, and get the recommendation part of the form attested by relevant official as I mentioned above.Go back to the same counter at the National Library (on any weekday between Monday and Friday, at any time of the day between 11AM and 5PM) to submit this completed and attested application form along with two stamp-sized photos, and your original document of government-issued photo identification card which mentions address (like Voter ID or Passport) alongwith it’s xerox.The counter will immediately issue the library card.Although I already mentioned repeatedly that there are no charges involved, it is quite sad that some people still try to request to hasten the standard process and attempt to corrupt it by coercing personnel to please accept money. I have seen such coercion attempts by uncivilized, filthy rich people, who keep insisting on shortcuts to “save time”.

Hong Kong also has limited developed land, which in turn means there is limited recreational facilities and this affects families the most. Imagine never being able to take your kid swimming or to play tennis…many of the experiences that are “free” in other parts of the world…So how do you get in? The first step is to become a racing member. You’ll need to put your networking hat on. Here’s how you do it, directly from the HKJC website:“Each candidate for Racing Membership must be proposed by a resident Honorary Steward, Honorary Voting Member or Voting Member of the Club. The application forms for Racing Membership are available from them.The application must be seconded by another resident Honorary Steward, Honorary Voting Member or Voting Member of the Club. Each candidate must also have three Club Members who are prepared to support his / her application for Membership.Proposers, Seconders and Supporting Members must know their candidates well and be satisfied that the candidates are persons of integrity before agreeing to sponsor their candidates.”Then after you become a racing member, you need to know one of those stewards or voting members well enough to ask him or her for an application:“A Racing Member who wishes to become a Full Member must complete the Full Membership Application Form.Full Membership Application Forms are available from resident Honorary Stewards, Honorary Voting Members (O) or Voting Members of the Club.“So my suggestion is start networking and get introduced to people on this list, that’s what I did!
