PDF Editor FAQ

Is it legal to own an elephant in Alaska?

I don't believe that it is legal for a private person to own an elephant anywhere in the USA, let alone in Alaska. The USDA and USFWS, which have jurisdiction over wildlife and its welfare would not permit this. I'm pretty sure there are no zoos in Alaska, at least, not with exotic wildlife, and the climate is not suitable for elephants.

Why are so many people leaving California?

I’ll tell you why the people I know, personally, left California. It’s more than “one thing”, but they’re all related. The vast majority of all of our elected officials are from one political party - because they are elected by two massive population centers in our state that are very far to one side of the political spectrum. The greater Los Angeles area, and the greater San Francisco Bay area. They make the laws for this state. The entire state. From the Mexican Border, to the Oregon border, to the Nevada/Arizona border, to the ocean. Southern California is in a drought? So California passes a law that if you wash your car in your driveway, you can get fined. Meanwhile, up here near the Oregon border on the coast, we’re getting normal rainfall, and thanks to a full reservoir, we’re dumping water into local rivers through the summer… but no, no, we can’t wash our cars!San Francisco thinks the best way to deal with drug use is to give away free needles… So we up here on the North Coast have our town and beaches covered in used needles.I could go on and on, and on. What San Francisco and Los Angeles want, they get. Because that’s where 80% of the population of the state are. They give the rest of us the finger. We don’t matter. They outnumber the rest of us. They have more state legislators than the rest of us.We are the most taxed state in the West… and most of the East as well. That money goes to Sacramento, where it is distributed - to San Francisco, and Los Angeles. Our gas taxes are the highest in the nation. We pay more than $1.00 a gallon more than any other place in the “contiguous 48” states. That gas tax goes to Sacramento…. to get distributed to San Francisco and Los Angeles.Want to start a business in California? You’re going to pay some of the highest business taxes in the country, and be burdened by more regulation than almost anywhere else as well. You will be paying your employees more than almost anywhere else, too. It doesn’t matter if you live in Alturas, where the cost of living is very very low, or in downtown San Francisco, where the cost of living is close to the highest in the country - you’re going to pay your employees like they live in SF.30 years ago, up here on the North Coast, we could go to the beach on a summer day, do some 4x4′ing on the beach, and maybe have a campfire in the evening and watch the sunset. Not any more. All the beaches up here are owned by BLM, USFWS, or have been consumed by the State into State Parks. 4x4′ing is illegal. Even THINK about starting a campfire, and you’ll get a $500 ticket from the BLM or USFWS guys - on quadrunners. These are some of the things California refugees are running from. They want to be able to afford a house, build a house, own a firearm, pay reasonable taxes, have a say in how the state is run (some of us escaping don’t WANT to turn other states into another California!).I’ve got another few years before being fully vested in my retirement system. Once I am, I have been considering finding a third career. One I can start somewhere other than California. I’m not going to abandon the number of service years I have, or leave the job that I rather like… but once I’ve maxed out? And paid my mortgage down to where I have significant equity if I choose to sell?I may be house hunting someplace else. Sure will miss the climate here - but I will not miss getting treated like a serf in the state I grew up in.

Why should I care about elephant poaching?

Elephant poaching is the richest people of the world crushing the poorest under their heels. Ivory isn't used to create anything necessary, it is used to flaunt wealth. Elephants are slaughtered so the ignorant rich can say, "Look what I can afford to buy!"Poachers are killing the wildlife and stealing the ecological heritage from all Africans. Many African countries depend on wildlife tourism."The illegal trade threatens to wipe out the natural endowment of affected nations by depriving future generations of their heritage, and of their right to develop those resources in legitimate ways.Ladies and gentlemen, it is wrong that children growing up in countries vulnerable to wildlife crime are losing their birthright in order to fuel the greed of international criminals, and that those children will face greater hardship and insecurity as this crime traps them in poverty."The Duke of Cambridge's speech on the illegal wildlife trade at the World Bank, Washington D.C., USAElephant poaching is a threat to international security and the stability of African countries. The illegal ivory trade is easy money for terrorist groups, armed militias and other criminal syndicates. CITES calculates that the illegal wildlife trade generates around $20 billion dollars annually."Indeed, it suits traffickers that areas rich in natural resources remain under-developed or conflict-ridden, so that they can go on plundering without restriction." The Duke of Cambridge's speech on the illegal wildlife trade at the World Bank, Washington D.C., USANairobi attack funded by rhino and elephant poachingOn average 2 rangers are killed each week while protecting wildlife. 1,000 over the last 10 years.Wildlife rangers — who tend to be incredibly knowledgeable about their environment and the ways of animals, but less so about infantry tactics — are wading into the bush to confront hardened soldiers. The New York TimesRory Young teaches rangers how to protect themselves and wildlife.Africa's ecosystems are already suffering because of the decrease in elephant numbers. The loss of forest elephants will devastate the Congo rain forest. It is the second largest rain forest in the world. Rain forests absorb billions of tons of carbon every year and slow the rate that carbon dioxide accumulates in the atmosphere. Elephants, the ecosystem’s engineers, gardeners and architectsElephants are an incredible species. To Richard Ruggiero, the situation is nothing short of the genocide of an animal that mourns its dead, loves its young and suffers emotionally."I am convinced many, if not most, know that people are trying to kill every last one of them and that they emotionally suffer because of it, and I can see it in their behavior," he said. "I am sure that they feel that and that they know it. That people are committing a genocide on them, and most of them even know it's for their teeth." Veteran USFWS official serves as U.S. eyes, ears in poaching crackdownI am the president of Chengeta Wildlife, a group that formed here on Quora. We are a nonprofit run by volunteers. We fund the anti-poaching work of Rory Young who trains rangers how to safely apprehend poachers and traffickers of wildlife products.
