In April 2000, the world found itself transfixed by the story of a little boy who unwittingly became the center of a fierce custody and immigration battle waged between the United States and Cuba.His name was Elián González.González was born in Cuba. His parents were divorced.When he was 5, he was found floating in an inner tube and rescued by two fisherman a few miles off the coast of Florida. Later, he was released to the US Coast Guard, who who sent him to the hospital to be treated for minor injuries before releasing him into the custody of his uncle, who lived in Miami.It turned out later that González was part of a group of people who were attempting to emigrate to America from Cárdenas, Cuba. However, the group encountered a storm that killed most of the people onboard, including his mother and stepfather.While González’s relatives sought to keep him in the United States, his father, with the aid of Fidel Castro, requested that he be returned to him in Cuba. The fact that his mother risked her life to move to America and died saving him was proof.For Cubans, he served as a symbol that life was not very bad in Cuba. His return marked a victory for them, and he was returned to a hero’s welcome. González would eventually talk about his relationship with Fidel Castro, citing him as a “father”.All of this occurred thanks to a simple custody battle.
