What is people's recently observed liking for strange, eccentric songs ("Gangnam Style," "Why This Kolaveri Di," etc.) of late? And how much of a role does social networking play in it?
To answer the question directly - I dispute the assumption that people's liking for this type of song is recent - I know personally it goes back at least 60 years, and I strongly suspect that novelty songs have been very popular since music began. With regard to the role social networking plays, well, it is really just re-imagined radio and TV, which were just re-imagined public performance. So it plays a role in that it has a huge number of eyeballs and ears, but other than wider coverage, I think it plays no role whatsoever in popularity.Strange, eccentric songs with an unusual sound have caught the public imagination for as long as I can remember listening to music, which is from around 1953. Here are some I remember hearing on the radio, which became hugely popular without any help from social networking - most of them predate SN by decades.(There is an overlap with comedy songs, but the following I think fit the bill, especially those in bold.)1922 - The Laughing Policeman - Charles Penrose, still going strong in the 1950s1941 - Buckingham Palace (“They’re Changing Guard at”) - Anne Stephens1942 - Conchita Marquita Lolita Pepita Rosita Juanita Lopez - Glenn Miller Band1943 - The "Hut-sut" song - Horace Heidt1943 - Mairzy Doats - Merry Macs1944 - I've Got a Lovely Bunch of Coconuts - Merv Griffon1948 - Life gets Tedious, Don't it? - Carson Robison1948 - Woody Woodpecker - Kay Kyser with Gloria Wood1953 - Hokey Pokey - Ray Anthony Orchestra1957 - The Bad Donkey / Pumpalum - Steve Lawrence1957 - Tie me Kangaroo Down - Rolf Harris1958 - My Friend the Witch Doctor(“Oo ee oo ah ah, ting tang, walla walla bing bang”) - David Seville1958 - Boney Maroney - Larry Williams1958 - The Chipmunk Song - David Seville & the Chipmunks1958 - Lollipop (“Oh Lolli Lolli Lolli”) - The Chordettes1958 - The Purple People Eater - Sheb Wooley1959 - Along Came Jones - The Coasters1959 - Delaware (“What did Della Wear, Boys?”) - Perry Como1959 - Pink Shoelaces - Dodie Stevens1959 - A Pub With no Beer - Slim Dusty1959 - Running Bear - Johnny Preston1959 - Seven Little Girls (The Avons)1960 - My Old Man’s a Dustman - Lonnie Donegan1960 - Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka-dot Bikini - Brian Hyland1960 - Ally Oop - The Hollywood Argyles1960 - The Twist (“Let’s twist again”) - Chubby Checker1961 - Rama Lama Ding Dong - The Edsels1961 - Big Bad John - Jimmy Dean1961 - Donald, Where’s Your Troosers? - Andy Stewart and the White Heather Group1962 - Ahab the Arab - Ray Stevens1962 - Monster Mash - Bobby "Boris" Pickett1962 - Papa Oom Mow Mow - The Rivingtons1962 - Speedy Gonzalez - Pat Boone1963 - Dominique - The Singing Nun1964 - My Boy Lollipop - Millie Small1964 - Boom Oo Yata-Ta-Ta - Morecambe and Wise1964 - Dang Me - Roger Miller1966 - They're Coming to Take Me Away, Ha Haaa - Napoleon XIV (Jerry Samuels)1966 - These Boots are Made for Walking - Nancy Sinatra1966 - Winchester Cathedral - The New Vaudeville Band1967 - I Was Kaiser Bill’s Batman - Whistling Jack Smith1968 - I'm the Urban Spaceman - Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band1971 - Coconut (put the lime in ..) - Harry Nillson1971 - Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep - Middle of the Road1971 - Chick-a-Boom - Daddy Dewdrop1974 - Kung Fu Fighting - Carl Douglas1975 - Convoy - CW McCall1975 - Barbados - Typically Tropical1976 - Daddy Cool- Boney M1976 - Muskrat Love - Captain and Tennille1976 - Baker Street - Gerry Rafferty1977 - Egyptian Raggae1979 - King Tut - Steve Martin1980 - Da Da Da .. - Trio1981 - Shaddup Your Face - Joe Dolce1984 - Agadoo - Black Lace1986 - One Night in Bangkok - Murray Head1986 - Walk like an Egyptian - Bangles1988 - Don't Worry, Be Happy - Bobby McFerrin1990 - Do the Bartman - Bart Simpson1991 - I'm too Sexy - Right Said Fred1992 - Achy Breaky Heart - Billy Ray Cyrus1994 - Doop - Doop1995 - Macarena - Los Del Rio1997 - Barbie Doll - Aqua1999 - The Bum Bum Song - Tom Green2000 - Who Let the Dogs Out - Baha Men2002 - The Ketchup Song - Las KetchupSome Other Songs that Spawned a Dance Craze1953 - Hokey Pokey - Ray Anthony Orchestra1959 - Madison Time - Ray Bryant1960 - The Twist (“Let’s twist again”) - Chubby Checker1960 - Do the Mashed Potato - James Brown1962 - Monster Mash - Bobby "Boris" Pickett1962 - The Loco-Motion - Little Eva1962 - Limbo Rock - Chubby Checker1974 - Kung Fu Fighting - Carl Douglas1975 - The Hustle - Van McCoy1978 - YMCA - The Village People1983 - Bille Jean (The Moonwalk) - Michael Jackson1986 - Walk like an Egyptian - Bangles1989 - Lambada - Kaoma1990 - Do the Bartman - Bart Simpson1995 - Macarena - Los Del Rio2000 - Cha Cha Slide - Mr C The Side Man2002 - The Ketchup Song - Las Ketchup2009 - You're a Jerk - New Boyz------0------
Can an American who is 16 years old legally drink wine with a restaurant meal while visiting the UK? If not, can they be arrested on returning to the US?
Assuming full compliance with any UK regulations that may apply—then the 16 year old is not violating any laws—perfectly legal and there is no danger of prosecution upon return.I was a high school exchange student in Germany in 1986 and because I didn’t drink, was routinely tasked with shepherding a bunch of young, dumb and drunk Americans home from the German pubs where teenagers were served as much alcohol as they paid for. German youth, by and large, are taught great respect for the alcoholic beverages that are woven into their culture. That said, I warn everyone that U.S. Federal Laws are so byzantine and regulatory in nature that a motivated prosecutor could find some criminal charges in just about any kind of conduct.A wise adult who is charged with accompanying said 16 year old American will make sure that they have the informed consent of parents before they allow the drinking to take place. Absent parents could be upset by this kind of conduct if they expect their 16-year old to be prevented from drinking alcohol while in the UK.I also wouldn’t allow it if I was a teacher or someone in loco parentis as far as U.S. Law goes—meaning, if the U.S. law could reach out and make me responsible for the kids in any group I was leading, I would be more careful. In loco parentis - WikipediaFrankly, I’d be more worried about some kid cracking a “bomb” joke in the airport or making fun of the security process somehow.Americans really need to chill out and respect the laws and cultures of other countries. Young people in these countries are often more carefully prepared to engage with alcohol in a way that most U.S. teenagers are not—they have somewhat more respect for the dangers of alcohol. (Yes, I realize that the UK has problems with young folks and alcohol, serious problems.)
