An individual that routinely slaps together small, simple, low budget, and low quality software applications without using rigorous software engineering processes should probably not be called a software engineer.However, individuals that routinely work with a team of people to engineer large, complex, big budget, and high quality software applications over long periods using rigorous software engineering processes should be called software engineers.I’m a software engineer. I also have a Master of Science Software Engineering and 10 years of professional experience as a software engineer. Before becoming a software engineer I worked for an architectural firm that designed schools, churches, community auditoriums, airport terminals and etc. I worked on teams with structural engineers, electrical engineers, mechanical engineers, and civil engineers and I’ve observed just as much (maybe more) professionalism and engineering discipline applied to designing and developing software as I saw designing and developing buildings.

If you need to work and don't already have an employer paying a good salary who will let you work remotely, then it probably isn't a good idea to move to Taos.If you have a good job you can do remotely, or are retired, then maybe this is a place for you. Be aware that housing is not cheap. A 2 or 3 bedroom home will go between $250,000 to $350,000 on the low end for a home that doesn't need repair. You can find cheaper if you are a DIY type person. Rentals are also high, you might find a small efficiency for $900, but I'd budget closer to $1500.The paper (taosnews.com) has had articles recently about the dearth of low income housing. The last batch of low income housing was built two or three years ago and has been full since it opened. The paper said city planners estimate the town needs an additional 400 low income units and that may not solve the problem.If you are into camping then you might try the West Mesa. There are people living out there in tents, buses, and all kinds of housing, with and without running water and electricity.All the economic warnings over, but one warning about traffic. This is a small town, but since it was established in the 1600s and many buildings have historic protections the roads can't be widened and with all the tourist traffic, the main drag is often backed up. You quickly learn what back roads.If you are into the arts, then Taos is a wonderful place to live. Not just from a creator's perspective, but also from an art lover's perspective. Last time I looked there were five different play groups for a variety of theater, numerous local musicians who play in the town's many venues (often with no cover or only a $5 or $10 cover), and 40 or so art galleries (down from more than 100 at the peak.) The Taos Community Auditorium hosts a number of music opportunities, high definition Live from the Met, and at one time plays from the National Theater in London. There is also a film club that shows a variety of independent films.I for one enjoy four seasons and think Taos is almost ideal from a weather perspective. We do get winter, but while the ski area may get a foot or more of snow, the town will get a few inches. Generally, the snow in town will melt off due to winter temps in the 40's during the afternoon. However, we do get those occasional weeks when the high is in the single digits.As with any perspective move, I'd recommend coming to visit a few times before you make that final decision.

I saw him once, in 1993.It was in Stockton, CA…in their community auditorium; no other theatre there was big enough.I would have liked to see him live more, but I don’t enjoy live shows that much, because of the crowds. But in this case, I zoned out, and only concentrated on him. I felt like no one else was around, and we were having a like-minded one-sided conversation.Today, my favorite is Bill Maher…again, I’ve only seen him live once. That’s ok…I won’t regret it when he dies. My annoyance with crowds has only gotten more acute.But, these two guys…plus Lewis Black and John Oliver…know the truth.
