You’re giving me homework already?”Well yes, but this might be the single most important part of the email outreach process. Response rates will skyrocket when you take this part seriously (meaning more opportunity $$$).The simplest way to think about this part in whom to contact can be summed up below:“Target Clients Who Have a Lot to Gain From Working with You.”– Matt Ingot, FreelanceTransformation“Find those who desperately needs your product or service” (paraphrased)–John Kreuzberger, Breakthrough EmailFind out who you are writing toSome simple questions to ask when researching prospects:What is the title or position of the person you want to connect with?What industry do they work in?Are they hiring? (indicates they have money $$$, not required but nice to know)What are their frustrations and business challenges?Where do they hang out online? What do they read? (more on this on Day 2: Finding Your Prospects)This information will help you build your persona. One of your ideal prospects.Build a Persona. Aka “Your Ideal Prospect”Example:Jon, a Web Development Agency owner wants to get more meetings (and ultimately more sales) with his target market, Creative Agencies in South East Asia. Jon’s Agency assists these Creative Agencies as their technology partner by building web-based solutions for their client’s projects.So, after doing some research, Jon’s ideal prospect would look something like this:What is the title of the person’s position you want to connect with?CEO, Founder, Managing Partner, or Creative Director.What industry do they work in? Branding, Identity, and Design (Graphic and Web)Are they hiring? (indicator they have money $$$, not required but nice to know)Yes (Companies searched through Linkedin and/or AngelList)What are their frustrations and business challenges?Jon has worked with many Creative Agencies with feedback from them saying that they need a technical team that can build solutions on time, on budget, and that are great communicators.Where do they hang out online? What do they read?Places Creative agency types hang out on: B2B Research & Reviews, Show and tell for designers, Behance, Smashing Magazine, etc.Okay, Jon now has a general idea of who his ideal prospect is.You can have multiple personas, but we're keeping things simple for now.Now go out and start Researching! You can do it.Step 2: Building your prospect list (software tools and sources)Alrighty, you’ve done some research and have an idea who your ideal prospects are.Locate themIt is now time to locate them and get their contact information. I have a couple of simple tools and strategies to do this.Use LinkedIn. I highly recommend you get a Linkedin Premium account if you plan on doing any sort of serious B2B (Business to Business) prospecting. Advanced search filters can do wonders in finding your target prospects.If you are targeting companies that use a particular web application, check out BuiltWith. BuiltWith will find out what web technologies websites are “built with”. Great for Consultants and Software agencies that want to target prospective clients that use a particular technology.Online communities like Angelist, Product Hunt, Top Marketing Content Today | Inbound.org, and GrowthHackers - Premier Growth Community - GrowthHackers are examples of niche communities with companies that could have your ideal B2B prospects.Online Associations and Magazines. Don’t rule these out. In the US, we have Regional Business Journals that are packed with lots of B2B companies in your local area. If you're a business that sells B2B, this is another great resource.Building the Lead ListTime to find that crucial piece of prospecting, the contact information (name, email, company, etc).For finding contact information, I like to use LeadFuze, B2B prospecting software. LeadFuze can pull information from a prospect's LinkedIn profile and find their email address.Once you sign up with LeadFuze, your dashboard will look like this. You are now ready to begin your prospecting journey! For this example, we will create a list of Creative Agencies.Now click on "Start Prospecting". This box will pop-up allowing you to narrow down your search options. It will first ask for the role/function of the prospects you are trying to find. You have a couple options in the search. In this example I like to limit my search to decision makers such as Founders, CEOs, Creative Directors, etc (select "Owner" in this case). Next, select the industry your target prospects work in. We will select "Marketing and Advertising". Under Keywords you can enter a term to narrow down your search further. Lastly, zone in on the Location for your target and click "search for prospects".Your search will bring up a Google page like this. You can see the search terms in the Google search bar below. The way they are typed out is called a Boolean Search, this helps the search engine narrow in on exactly what you are looking for. Check it out onLeadFuze to dive deeper. You can look through your results to see if they fit your ideal prospect. Click on each result for a more in-depth look at each LinkedIn profile. Once you determine they match who you are looking for, simply click "Add" from the LeadFuze search widget on the right of your screen.Back in your LeadFuze Dashboard, you will now have contacts and email addresses in the list you created. They appear within seconds! However, every once in a while LeadFuze may be unable to find some information. You can always click the edit button, next to delete, and see if you can fill in the information. It may just have the wrong web address or company name.If all information is entered correctly and LeadFuze still says no valid email found, I like to turn things over to Rapportive. This browser extension simply shows a contact's Linkedin profile in your inbox when you enter in his/her email address. Don't have an email address? Simply guess. (Some good examples might be [email protected] or [email protected] or [email protected]). Once the Linkedin profile appears, you know you have the correct email. Now just edit your list.Now you have used LeadFuze to find some great quality prospects, but lets say you need more. This is where it's important to mention online communities where your ideal prospects can be found. We will continue to build our list of Creative Agencies using a site called Clutch. This site provides a directory and reviews on top development, design and marketing companies.First, click on the area that best fits your market. We will use Advertising & Marketing to continue our Creative list search.Clicking on New York bring up a list of Agencies. You can of course filter your search. For the purpose of our search, we will click on KOUNTERATTACK, and receive a company profile with company information. You probably will not see the name and email for the company's decision maker, so we then do a LinkedIn search on the company.You will see that with your Linkedin search, you still have access to your LeadFuze widget. We can find the person we need to contact and click Add to our Creative Agencies list, now obtaining their email. Awesome, right?Congratulations! You have now learned how easy it is to start building your prospect list. The next step will be to take this list and start writing your emails.Step 3: Writing Emails (and some sweet templates to get you started)Step 1: Formatting: Make sure these things are in your email below.Greeting “Hi [person], or Hey [person]”Identify who you are (“Jamie from Wake up with Leads here.”Reason you are reaching out (make sure it's meaningful)Your value to them (what does your company do, how you can help them, and why you're unique)Provide your supporting URL, Portfolio, or a special link to communicate trust and credibilityCall to action (can be simple or specific, more or this later)Your Email Signature (include your name, name of business, email, phone and business address, especially if you are prospecting B2B to comply with SPAM laws)See cold email format template below.Cold Email TemplatesNow you have an idea of what a well-formatted cold email could look like. It's time to use some templates that can be super helpful in kick-starting your cold email prospecting efforts.I will mention three templates I use regularly that have worked well for me. Quick note, these are all from professionals that I admire that teach on the subject of cold email prospecting. When you use a template do not copy exactly, take inspiration from it and make them your own.
