What is it like to live in Fairbanks, Alaska, USA?
I LOVED it!I enjoy cooler weather, and since it’s considered to be an arctic desert, it's very dry there, so, yes, it gets cold, but it's a dry cold that is (or was to me!) very tolerable! As long as you dress appropriately in the winter, you're fine! It's beautiful in a way that the “lower 48”is not… its wild and moose is the worst thing to fear!Fairbanks has 1 Walmart, and when I lived there , the TON was all abuzz about Walgreens coming in!There are no major chain restaurants, mostly mom& pop places to eat! There are fast food places , McDonalds, Taco Bell, subway…. but not many more. It's expensive. You earn more, but you spend more. There is a Hot Springs 50 miles away… very fun ( it has a motel & restaurant)it's 132 miles from the actual arctic circle, and @ 150 from Denali.I loved it there. It's really easy to make friends— I think because everyone has the “ we’re all in this together!” Mindset. The midnight sun was really awesome in the summer, but the dark December days were harder to adjust to.I think the Northern Lights make up for that!!
What are 20 things that are not worth it?
Here’s my list (in no particular order). These are things that I have personally learned that are not worth my time, and hopefully some of you out there can relate. I do firmly believe these things are damaging for your growth (except for maybe one thing, because it’s based on a location and not development). Here we go:Long distance relationships. There’s nothing wrong with making friends online. The internet is useful in meeting new people, especially people who share your interests. Long distance/online relationships are not worth it. Skyping someone is not the same as having an intimate connection with someone in person, because you can only build an authentic relationship with someone in person. Do you really believe the person you’re “seeing” isn’t seeing someone else, or chatting with other people online? Online relationships are for children.Watching Television. I’m sure I’ve mentioned this before, and I’m more than sure nearly everyone else has said the same, but it’s something that can’t be stressed enough. Cable is dying, but millions of people still watch cable television. Cable is a waste of money, and the shows you’re watching are not exactly educational. Almost every channel, except maybe a few, have been taken over by Reality TV. Watching TV is also super addicting, it’s rewarding you the same way smoking a cigarette is. You can waste hours watching TV with little awareness; hours you could have spent on productive activities. Get rid of TV, start reading.Settling in retail. If you’re young and entering the working world then there’s nothing wrong in starting off at some grocery store. You need to start somewhere, and retail stores, especially the big ones, are pretty easy to get into. I strongly recommend not settling. I know some people aren’t as fortunate as others, but that doesn’t have to be you. You don’t have to spend 30 years in retail. If you are not escalating the company ladder after a year or two then it’s time to leave. You will waste your life in retail and you will not be happy. Not studying after school. By this I mean not continuously studying after you graduate. You are blessed with the most complex organ in the world. So, do yourself a favor and study- learn- like your life depends on it. Don’t do it to be egotistical, do it because it’s good for you. There are countless things you don’t know about, and the majority of it is worth learning. Make studying a habit and learn how the world works. Study history, psychology, ecology, physics, mathematics, culture, philosophy, religion. The list goes on. It will make you open-minded.Eating junk food. Another typical answer, but another important one. There’s a reason why it’s called junk food. It’s not good for you. You might think it’s okay because your friends eat Taco Bell everyday (man, do I love Taco Bell), but I guarantee they have a faster metabolism than you. Hell, even if you have a fast metabolism it doesn’t justify the other terrible stuff it does to your body. For example, my blood pressure is very high. It’s usually around 169/65 which is considered hypertension. My blood pressure can be lowered when I take care of myself, but the reason why it’s high is because of all the energy drinks I consume. Junk food is bad for your blood, it’s bad for your heart, it puts on pounds, and makes you less attractive. It’s time to put on your grownup pants and eat healthy.Complaining. If you complain a lot now is the time to stop. Stop while you can, because no one likes a complainer. I work with one, and all he does is bitch and moan about how he can’t get the shift that he wants. His complaining has turned him into an extremely negative person to the point where he doesn’t care about the lives of the patients we work with (I work at a psychiatric hospital). People notice when you complain and it’s fucking annoying. Now, you may absolutely vent when you need to. You can’t expect to store all emotional baggage within 24/7 and not feel bad. Don’t be afraid to talk to people when you need to. The difference between that and complaining is attitude. You victimize yourself when you complain, hoping to gain approval and gather pity from those around you. Nope. Don’t do it. You’re not a victim.Visiting Alaska during the winter. If you’re not from here; if you live somewhere warm, but you’ve always wanted to see the beautiful scenery of Alaska; look into coming up during the summer. It’s usually a modest 60–70 degrees during the summer. I recommend coming up anytime between June through August. Wintertime is a whole different beast. Other states get cold, in fact a lot of them have been colder lately, but it’s just so dark and gloomy up here during winter. Ice builds up on the roads quickly, there’s always accidents, crime goes up, and the temperature is usually in the negatives. It’s currently -13 degrees where I’m at right now. But in Fairbanks? Barrow? Hold on to your butts, because it’s a whopping -65 up there.Surfing the web. This is similar to the TV point. It’s not exactly useful and it’s addicting. If you’re going to surf the web use that time to learn interesting things, and set a time limit. You don’t need to be on the Internet constantly.Only listening to metal. This is oddly specific, I know, but this comes from experience. It’s one thing to enjoy metal or be a fan of metal music, but if it’s all you listen to then it’s time to start branching out. Good metal is a good escape I say; however, there’s amazing genres of music to dive into. Jazz, blues, rap, world, folk- you name it. If this doesn’t pertain to you then don’t even worry about it, but to all you edgy kids that only listen to Black Veil Brides (which is not metal btw), Sleeping with Sirens, Suicide Silence etc., try listening to other stuff. It won’t kill you, and I promise it won’t ruin your reputation. It’ll actually make you more interesting…. And start listening to real metal, too.Chasing after a romantic interest. Wooooooh boy, here comes a good one a lot of people need to hear. Chasing=desperation, and like the complainer, no one likes the perpetually desperate person. Why do I say perpetually? Well, because it’s fine to be desperate during desperate times. Your car breaks down, you’re going to need help. Your house burns down, you’re going to need help. A friend passes away, you’re going to need help. You should still keep your desperation under control during those situations. Don’t go around chasing women/men who are not interested in you. You will waste your time doing this, and it’s cringe. You see, when someone is into you they will actively try to spend time with you, because, well, they’re interested in you! It’s not rocket science. It’s hard letting go of that beautiful woman you had a great conversation with, but if she’s not into you you best leave it be. Chasing out of desperation makes you mentally weak. Not cleaning your home. The state of your home is a reflection of your current state of mind. That mess you’ve been neglecting for months is a representation of something that’s happening within that needs to be dealt with. Don’t just pick up your clothes, take the time to actually clean your home. I’m talking sweeping, mopping, disinfecting, washing dishes, dusting, wiping the toilet and shower. It’s your living space for god’s sake! People notice when your place is messy/dirty, and it makes you look bad. Your home is an extension of you and if you take care of it you are taking care of yourself. You’re much more likely to get sick in a chaotically filthy environment than you are a clean one.Always having an excuse. Take responsibility for your actions. Actions speak louder than words. Don’t tell your boss you’re sorry for showing up late for the fifth time, show him/her that you care about your job and show up on time.Having a large circle of friends. Most people want to be popular, and they especially want to be the most popular one of their group of friends. Not only that, but most people want a lot of friends too. I do believe this is a younger mentality, but it’s something that can affect your adult social life if you don’t grow out of it. You don’t need a large group of friends- it’s too exhausting. You only need a handful, or two, of good friends. How do you define a handful? That’s really up to you.Drinking. I’m going to tell you a story, so bear with me. In 2019 my mother called me and said she needed to go to the ER. I immediately got in my car and drove to her place, and when I arrived she had already puked up blood three or four times. Her toilet was filled with blood. She then said she would just go lay down and that everything was alright, but I demanded she get in the car, because when you’re throwing up blood it’s time to go to a hospital (remember that). I grabbed a bowl for her, and I guided her to the car. I drove to Anchorage in the dark, cold winter. It was difficult to see the roads with all the snow, and my mother was still puking blood, but I was on autopilot. The only thing that mattered was getting my mom to the hospital. We arrive at Providence and as soon as I showed the receptionist the bowl she called for a nurse and they took her into emergency care. A few hours later a doctor approached me and said, “your mother’s liver is failing. There is hope for her, but it’s slim. If she gets through the operation she cannot drink again”. I approved for all her surgeries afterwards. I get a phone call saying that I need to come to the ICU; “you need to see your mom right now”, said the doctor. I knew then that the last time I would see my mom was in an unconscious state before she passed away. The doctor told me there was only one last thing they could do; another surgery to bridge a connection between a vein and her liver. I approved it, and waited for a whole day. Spoiler alert, my mother lived. She’s alive and healthy, but she spent nearly two weeks recovering in a hospital bed, and at one point she tells me, “I don’t want to go home. I want to die”. All of this was from drinking. Drinking as in alcoholism. If you drink like this stop now! Alcohol will consume your life, and it will kill you. By the way, detoxing is not fun.Jacking off. I’ll humor you all for a bit, after that last depressing point. Fellas, stop jacking off so much. It’s another thing that wastes time, and it’s another thing to get addicted to. Go do some pushups instead. Go do ANYTHING instead. Nothing wrong with a little wanking here-and-there, but excessive masturbation makes your room smell bad. Just saying.Spending time with people who don’t make you happy. Your happiness is so important. We all know toxic people, the kind of people who drag you down to their level or ridicule you. It’s up to you to decide who you want to be around. This shows a sign on maturity on your end too. Mature people attract other mature people.Always waiting for that “perfect moment”. What exactly is a perfect moment? What is the perfect opportunity? Take a moment to really think about this, because most people don’t think about what exactly this means. Sometimes opportunities come your way out of sheer luck. Most of the time, however, opportunities are something you have to create. Your entire life is a creative process that you are the master of. You can’t expect the world to hand you what you want; you have to take action and make things happen. The longer you wait for something the less likely it’ll happen, which is why it’s up to you to make it happen in the first place. Doesn’t matter how big or small, if you have a goal then you need to work towards that goal. It won’t be easy, but it’ll be worth it. Trust me, but more importantly, trust yourself.Living in your past. Your past experiences have shaped who you are today, but it’s not who you are fundamentally. Your past self is a representation of what you were back then, not now. This is so important to not only know but to fully embody, because this relates to a state of being. I’m talking about being present. Be here, now. Don’t be where you were, because it’s gone, and it’s not coming back. However, past behaviors can certainly repeat themselves with a lack of awareness. That’s why you want to focus on this moment now, because that’s what’s real. Nothing else is real except for this moment. Take some time to learn about mindfulness, meditation, or other awareness exercises. Not facing your fears. I’m afraid of spiders. I’m afraid of driving on icy roads. I do make a conscious effort to pick up spiders in my apartment and put them outside, and I have no choice but to drive on icy roads to get to work. You don’t want to live in fear, because fear will slow your progress. If you are afraid of something then take the time to understand the thing you’re afraid of and why you’re afraid of it. Spend time with that thing and adapt, overcome, grow from experience. The most effective way of getting over a fear is to confront it head on. Don’t avoid it anymore.Following pop culture. Who the hell cares, really? It’s not interesting, and it’s certainly not important for you. Follow good friends, teachers, parents, romantic partners…. But, most importantly, follow you.Until next time. Peace.
WhERE are some of the country parts of of ALASKA?
There’s “ country” to be found minutes away from the airport. Your pilot given that it’s not obscenely way early, will usually point out some spectacular sights. Sites that are untouched by humans. And others that are very much on the proverbial “beaten path”. But ITS ALL COUNTRY. But you are asking a question that is generic. And I don’t get what you mean. Outside the urban sprawl? My condo has a few views. An oreillys, an auto zone, and a Taco Bell. Depending on time of year? The birch tree houses eagles, ravens, the occasional moose. And yes a bear on rare encounters. But that’s what happens when you live north. But if you are asking about the strictly “ country”? It’s not really far from the “urban”. As in miles away in the largest state in the union. If you want to see the bush? Than quit watching the very staged reality shows. And book a ticket for past FAI. And they can take you to the Arctic Ocean. I highly recommend a quick dip out of deadhorse. But that’s just my bucket list thing. And I am sorry to say this. As a bipartisan. But Sarah palin? She would have to have some serious super power to see “Russia” from her house. You would need to have some serious optics to see Canada from tok. Head north of anchorage, or south central. Or Fairbanks. Either way you can find some “country”.
