This will sound so stupid at first, so hang with me. Here’s how I can explain what copywriters do.Copywriters are writers of copy. Okay, duh.But “copy” is just what people in the advertising and marketing world call words.So someone with the job title of “Copywriter” is anyone who writes words for advertising and marketing materials.Those materials include billboards, pamplets and brochures, TV and radio and online commercials, scripts for instructional videos, branded social media content like Facebook posts that are under the name of Taco Bell or any other business trying to sell anything.So “copywriter,” like “lawyer” or “teacher” or “preacher,” is a general job title term that can refer to anyone who writes for promotional purposes in any form of marketing or advertising. Whenever you see or hear WORDS TRYING TO SELL YOU ON ANYTHING, oftentimes a copywriter wrote it.Sometimes, people who aren’t copywriters create promotional materials. But it takes copywriters to do it well. Just like anyone could step into a classroom as a substitute teacher and “teach,” but they might not know what they’re doing. Copy isn’t always written by copywriters. But it usually is, especially for any reputable brand.To further explain: The end of goal of fiction writers, for example, is to write to entertain an audience through a fictional story. But the end goal of copywriters, on the other hand, is to persuade an audience to take a real action in the world using only their words.These actions copywriters are trying to get out of people usually involve ultimately buying a product. But they can also involve clicking a link, applying for a job, signing up for an email newsletter, or whatever the goal of the copy needs to be.So what do copywriters actually physically do throughout the workday?They mainly just sit at a computer with a list of projects on their plate and write ads, blogs, etc. on a processor like Microsoft Word or Google Docs. Anything their clients need them to write. Then they submit their work to a Creative Director or Strategist, who send their work to the Account Executives, who pitch your work to the client (who is the person with the actual product to sell).Or, if the copywriter is a freelance copywriter, they’ll often communicate directly with the client or an outside company who’s working directly with the client, and submit their work straight to those people.These thoughts are a bit jumbled. Sorry about that.
