PDF Editor FAQ
Do US Air Force fighter jets grease their rails so AIM-120 and Sidewinders don't jam when launching?
AIM-9s and AIM-120s do get launched off rails. See the 2 rails on the top and bottom of the launcher? They are sprayed with a graphite type dry lubricant that is gun metal in color (forgot the actual name, P/N though)
How does a pencil’s rubber (eraser) work on the atomic level?
Graphite is composed of flat plates - that's why it's an excellent dry lubricant. It's also why erasers smear graphite. They pick up a layer or two of plates until they become saturated, then they simply slide the removed plates over those remaining on the paper. In doing so they are quite likely to push some graphite deeper into the paper - especially as they need a certain amount of downward pressure to work. That's why I no longer use erasers. Instead I use Blu-Tack that, being slightly sticky, picks up and ABSORBS the graphite. No pressure is required and the graphite is lifted straight out the tooth, usually leaving the area sufficiently undamaged to accept further drawing.I have a tutorial on its use: ERASING PENCIL with BLU-TACK wall putty at MIKE SIBLEY FINE ARTAlso, unlike conventional erasers, it can remove the top layer of graphite without affecting the base detail layer. That offers amazing opportunities for fine tuning. Here it is in action, particularly in the right-hand side foliage:
How do I preserve pencil sketches?
As Pam mentioned, use a fixative. I use Winsor & Newtons fixative "for Pastel, Charcoal and Pencil" and it's a workable fixative. It dries with a matt finish that effectively creates more tooth so further applications of graphite can be applied.More importantly, it contains a UV filter to assist in your paper not yellowing with time. And the matt finish removes most of the graphite sheen. That's why your drawing usually appears darker after spraying. As an aside, unlike the coarse grains of charcoal, graphite is made up of flat plates. That's why it reflects light, and why it's an excellent dry lubricant. You cannot avoid light reflecting off your drawing. But when sprayed with a matt fixative, the coating removes most of the reflective properties.Personally, I place my drawing on a flat surface and place scrap paper at either side. I spray onto the scrap until I'm certain the can won't spit (which is rare), then float a light coating over the drawing as I move the can to the other side. Repeat as necessary, because a few light coats is far more preferable to one heavy coat.Your drawing will be smudge-free, protected from harmful sunlight UV rays, and all the darks will be restored to their intended intensity. Finally, although I rarely do this, you can fix before completion. For example, the background of this Cockatoo has layers of 6B burnished with 2B and then fixed with a workable fixative. That was repeated three times to build up the solid dark background.
