Not many people are familiar with this guy. Note the subtitle of the book … the fighter pilot who changed the art of war.The Marine colonel took from his pocket a Marine Corps insignia, the eagle globe and anchor. He marched out of the crowd, kneeled, and placed the insignia near the urn containing Boyd’s ashes. [1][1][1][1]Why did the US Marine Corps see fit to honor an Air Force fighter pilot? And what does Boyd have to do with the maneuverability of fighter jets? Prepare for an interesting story …Boyd flew F-86s in Korea, but the fighting ended before he could log any kills. But that’s not interesting to us.As a Fighter Weapons School (FWS = Navy Top Gun) instructor, he became known as “40-second Boyd”.Boyd became so confident in his ability in the F-100 that he had a standing offer for every class that went through FWS: “Meet me over the Green Spot at thirty grand. Get in trail. Get in close about five hundred feet. I’ll reverse our positions in twenty seconds, or pay you twenty bucks.”The bet was later amended to forty seconds / forty bucks. No one ever won the money.Boyd wrote the manual on USAF fighter tactics … literally. In 1960, he wrote the “Aerial Attack Study”. The study became the tactics manual for FWS and for numerous foreign air forces. A Marine Corps pilot used the manual to train Navy and Marine Corps pilots. (Boyd received the Legion of Merit for this study).In 1961, while Boyd was studying at the Georgia Institute of Technology, he developed the ideas that became the Energy-Maneuverability Theory (E-M Theory). In 1964, Boyd was scheduled to give a 20 minute brief to the 4-star general who headed TAC. The briefing lasted a day and a half … E-M Theory was now accepted doctrine, and (after it was applied) went on to provide US pilots in Vietnam a tactical edge.But that’s just the prelude …While USAF continued developing “bigger, faster, better” planes, Boyd and his “acolytes” in the Pentagon worked quietly behind the scenes to develop an airplane developed to fully optimize E-M Theory. The result:The lightweight fighter had such an extraordinary thrust-to-weight ratio and could recover energy so quickly that energy dumping became a tactic of choice rather than desperation.(Actually, the original prototype was about 3,000 lbs lighter, and had much better performance than the production model).I’ll leave it to others to discuss matters such as inherent instability, etc.Interestingly, Boyd’s contributions were not limited to fighter tactics and aerodynamic theory. He went on to develop larger theories concerning warfare.You may have heard of the OODA loop (also known as Boyd’s cycle).
