PDF Editor FAQ

What's the difference between spot color PMS (Pantone Matching System®) vs. process color?

The Pantone Matching System® (PMS) is a print industry standard that allows designers and printers to match specific colors. Pantone colors are used for stationery and logo designs. CMYK Process colors are used for full color images such as photographs. The PMS uses 14 defined colors to mix a palette of 1114 unique solid spot reference colors. The 14 basic colors are:Yellow, Purple, Yellow 012, Violet, Orange 021, Blue 072, Warm Red, Reflex Blue, Red 032, Process Blue, Rubine Red, Green, Rhodamine Red, Black, plus Transparent White. Each spot color requires a different plate for printing. The system allows precise color matching, especially in one, two or three color Offset printing. The graphic below shows the CIE (International Standards body) color chart overlaid with the PMS, CMYK and the Microsoft/Hewlett Packard (sRGB) color reference standards:The Pantone® Formula Guide provides a standard for mixing and producing colors on three paper stocks (coated, uncoated, and matte paper) and adds the suffix C,U or M to the numbered colors. Each ink of the 1114 colors can be ordered ready-made or mixed onsite by the printer. Printers submit samples of their basic 14 color palettes for annual approval and licensing by Pantone. The Pantone system guarantees spot color consistency from design to client, to pre press, through the press room, to final delivery. It provides a reliable source for color communication.Process Color Systems simulate colors by separating a file into four colors: Cyan (C), Magenta (M), Yellow (Y) and Black (K).Each of the four colors is used to make a separate printing plate and overprinted on paper, one at a time. Thousands of colors can be printed by varying the proportion of cyan, magenta, yellow and black. The final image produces an illusion of continuous colour tone. The four color Process Color System can simulate some colors well but, other colors lack brightness and hue when compared to spot colors. The Pantone® Color Bridge™ provides an industry reference for converting Pantone Spot Colors to Process Colors. It specifies the required CMYK tint percentages for 3010 color simulations. Thanks for the A2A!Sources:1. How do I match the RGB, Pantone, and CMYK colors?

Technically you cannot, you can select aproxomaite versions and Pantone provides conversion sets to help with that. For example you can look up the CMYK equivalent of a PMS color to get the formula but there are so many variables that can effect the CMYK color build up that if you've designated the color for banding it is often preferred to use the Pantone color as a 5th ink on press. RGB approximation is all that is needed since RGB is a very limited color set in printing (its a large color gamut in transmittance but less so in reflective media like traditional printing, it cannot recreate most of the colors that CMYK can in print. And most designers know that no monitor, tablet or phone has the same color rendition, dynamic range, or calibration so RGB close proximity is more of a loose(more)

What color correct paint is a brand new (that hasn’t yellowed) Macintosh SE?

Apple called the warm, desaturated gray “Platinum,” part of the Snow White design language created by Frog Design and used from 1987 to 1990. It replaced the beige “Pantone 453” tone from the previous generation Apple ii and Mac products. The Platinum color lasted well into the 1990s across Apple’s portfolio, although it was copied by many competitors. The Colors of Applehttp://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=866"Apple does not normally use PMS color charts or Pantone color numbers to designate the platinum color that is now the company standard. Our platinum color number on a coded PMS chart is somewhere between 420 and 421, somewhat closer to 421. (This depends on the age of the chart and the light source used for viewing it."The subject has come up on reddit: r/VintageApple - Help finding a Pantone colour to match Apple's Platinum colourThe keys did not yellow - they were deemed to be close to Pantone Cool Gray 2U, slightly darker than 1U.ImgurThe plastic case did yellow a lot, so you might want to try mixing some custom colors around these standards and see what you like best.

This works so well being integrated into everything you use for video and audio. Got a tablet, pad, or phone then this is the way to load those DVDs , CDs or downloaded files right to you device. I haven't found a DVD that I couldn't copy and watch on my pad yet. I've looked high and low and finally found the one that really works.
