What AP classes did you take in high school, and how hard were they?
10th GradeAP World History: (Score: 5, Difficulty: 3/10) I will say that the main reason that I even considered this class to be difficult is because it was my first ever AP class and I had to get used to AP-style questions. Aside from that, the class was a cakewalk. World History has always been my favorite subject, so I wasn’t necessarily being exposed to anything new, especially in regards to Indian, Persian, and Islamic history. The most difficult part for me was European and Latin American history, since I only knew surface level knowledge regarding them. The actual class had a really light workload and my teacher was pretty laid back most of the time. She even let me give a lesson one day about Pakistan and India. The tests were difficult at first because, as stated prior, it was my first time taking an AP class, but by the time of the actual AP exam, I had absolutely no trouble, especially for the essays. I still remember the giant LEQ I wrote about Buddhism. Overall, I really loved this class because how it broadened my view of history and got me to appreciate cultures I didn’t pay much attention to prior.11 GradeAP Chemistry: (Score: 4, Difficulty: 7/10) AP Chemistry was a bit of a weird class for me. To preface, out of the core subjects, science is probably strong-suit, even if it may not be the one I’m most passionate about. The weirdness of AP Chemistry has to with the fact that my class was constituted of solely 7 students, including myself. My teacher was also pretty inexperienced at the time with teaching the AP curriculum. On top of that, my classmates were, for a lack of better word, a pretty rambunctious group(still love these guys though). This led to the class moving along very slowly in terms of notes, labs, and worksheets. As such, the class was really easy, but the test was most definitely not. I got 100s on all of the tests, whereas my classmates were raking in 70s-80s. This gave me the illusion that I was on the right course for the AP exam but as soon as I cracked open a review book maybe two weeks or so before the exam, I got a harsh reality check. The tests and subject materials we were covering in class were extremely watered down and the questions weren’t anywhere near as complex as they were on the real test. So, with determination to not fail the exam, I spent the next two weeks cramming hardcore the test. I have to say, I’m pretty happy with a 4, when considering that 4/7 kids in my class got a 1 and another got a 2. Class after that was even more chill. We watched movies and hung out. It was like a morning study hall with a couple buds and an awesome teacher. I give it a 7/10 because even though the class was mad easy, the subject material was the exact opposite.AP US History: (Score: 5, Difficulty: 5/10). Alright so, AP US History, for me, was the exact opposite of everything I said about AP Chemistry. It was like entering a completely different climate and the worst part is that it was my 3rd mod class right after AP Chemistry. Basically, the subject material for APUSH is hilariously easy. It really is a rehash of all the stuff that US students learn in elementary school or junior high. However, that class was actual hell. Before I go further, I want to make clear that I’m not trying to trash my APUSH teacher. She definitely prepared us well for the exam. However, let me give a rundown of our workload in that class. For APUSH, we had four packets that were due at the end of each unit. Basically, we filled out the section for the unit we were on at the given time. The first packet was called the Curriculum Framework(hate this one. absolutely despise it. must be burned at all costs). Basically, in this packet, we would be given a statement that ties to the core ideas and concepts of the APUSH curriculum. For the statement, we are to give two historical examples that support it. An explanation of what that historical example was, and then we have to connect the example back to the statement. So, as an example(Note, that I’m gonna simply the statement. The actual ones were much more complicated):Statement: The United States saw a surge in revolutionary zeal following the French and Indian War.Example #1: The Proclamation Line of 1763Explanation: In order to maintain stable relations with the Native Americans, England prevented westward expansion by the US colonists.Explanation: The Proclamation Line of 1763 was seen as unjust by the colonists because of the opportunity that the western land held. Furthermore, the colonists had to pay excessive sums of money to pay for the soldiers that would guard the boundary. There were essentially being forced to pay to handicap themselves. This was seen as tyranny and an infringement on the rights of the colonists.Alright, so for that one I just gave 1 example but you get the point. 2 examples for each statement. Now imagine having to do 20–30 pages or roughly 50–60 statements of these things to do every unit. The other packet was the Crossroads packets. For which, we had to read through unit summaries and annotate(the quickest and most forgiving packet). The final packet was the One Pagers. For this packet, we had to fill out two pages(The name One Pagers is pretty misleading. Should be called Two Pagers.) for each decade. In those two pages, we were to name three influential figures of the time period, create a timeline of 5 significant events, draw or print out a picture that represents the time periods, name literary or artistic movements, and then write a reflection about the decade. The final packet was the notes packet of the respective time period because in between the notes we went over in class, there was a load of worksheets we were expected to complete and turn in by the day of the unit test. We did all of this while also doing daily Google Classroom assignments which could involve reading documents, answering questions, formulating arguments, and responding to the arguments of classmates. The icing on the top of the cake was the book project. To explain, we were all split up into groups at the beginning of the year for the book project. In a given marking period, there would be one group that would be assigned a book(usually in range 300–400 pages) for which they had to write journal entries. At the end of the reading, they were to write a book critique and create a presentation that they are to give to the class during the duration of one class. For me, my group was assigned the project in the 2nd marking period and we read Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee. Any given person had two book projects in a school year because there were 6 marking periods but only 5 groups. For one marking period, everyone did an individual book project. I have thoroughly gone over the class’ workload, so I’ll shift my attention to the tests. They were easy. That’s all.12th GradeAlright, so I’m still at the beginning of 12th grade, so I’ll just list the classes I’m taking and what I think so far. I’ll probably come back and edit this answer to give my final thoughts after I get my scores for the exams.AP English Literature: (Difficulty: 5/10). My teacher is really nice and kind with the workload. The course material is pretty easy so far. We have read The Stranger and 1984 and done AP style essays/short responses. I think I’ll do alright on the exam. I’m really enjoying the class and the books we’re reading.AP Government: (Difficulty: 9/10). My teacher is an upbeat dude and classes are discussion based.
