Why did General Electric decide to sell its GE Appliance division instead of making it competitive?

Actually, GE appliances were very competitive, selling more appliances that Whirlpool, the only other U.S. Appliance manufacturer. GE Appliances was always a profitable division. The reason why it was sold, goes back to the days when Jack Welch was CEO of GE. Welch’s stated goal was to get General Electric “out of the manufacturing industry and into the service industry.“ His ultimate goal was for GE’s #1 primary/core business to be in finance. In 1982, Welch began to systematically sell off GE’s manufacturing business with the sale of GE’s very lucrative heating and cooling division (HVAC) to Trane. Shortly thereafter he sold GE’s Consumer Electronics Division to Thomson of France, then he sold GE Small Appliance division (GE Housewares) to Black and Decker in April 1984. Most of GE’s core business continued to be sold off by Welch, and then Jeff Immelt, Welch’s successor. With his impending retirement, Welch handpicked Jeffrey Immelt as the next CEO of General Electric. Welch indicated to Immelt that the provision for his being CEO was that he must continue the transformation of GE out of electrical products production and into consumer and industrial services with specializations in insurance and finances/banking. Immelt dutifully continued to sell of GE’s core components. GE Plastics was sold to SABIC, A Saudi Arabian company. Eventually GE motors, GE wiring devices/electrical distribution were sold off as well. Of course, stock prices went flying upwards in value as money was pouring into GE with the sale of each division. The cheers did not last long as the consequences of Welch’s attempts to transform a 100+ year old electrical company into a bank and insurance company were becoming apparent. General Electric’s core business were the company’s foundation. If you start removing bricks froma foundation, one by one, eventually the structure above will begin to tumble. GE began to tumble. Stocks prices were falling and GE was bleeding money. Hemorrhaging money might be a better description. From day one over a 100 years ago, GE was designed to research and create electrical products for industry and the residential consumer. GE also made the electricity, that ran the products they sold, with their generators and turbines. Basically GE produced the products the consumer needed and then they produced the power needed to run their products. The perfect setup, GE created products that ran on the electricity they made, that is they created the demand for their own products. .It worked well and GE was once the second largest corporation in the United States a booming international market. It is said GE’s logo was the most recognized logo in the world.Sadly, Jack Welch’s trying to reform GE into a company in his own image resulted in GE’s beginning its the death spiral. Stocks plummeted. The core industries that kept GE afloat and profitable, even during the Great Depression, were now gone.In essence Welch and Immelt cut off the roots that supplied the GE tree. In vain attempts to pump money into General Electric, Immelt sold GE Appliances for $5.6 billion dollars to Haier-Qingdao of Communist China. Not only was GE Appliances competitive, it was profitable and had an international market and the largest appliance manufacturing facility, Appliance Park in Louisville, KY, under one roof.Even the sell of GE Appliances could not stop the hemorrhaging of money from GE and finally, the new CEO of GE, Larry Culp, sold GE’s last consumer industry, and one of its oldest divisions, GE Lighting. Will GE survive? Probably not, it core industries were ripped out of it by greedy CEO’s. this tearing apart of GE limb by limb began with Welch it started a chain reaction of destruction to the company which is growing in momentum and can no longer be stopped.General Electric, the company that was known as the company that made “everything for everyone” is now dying.GE Appliances was not only competitive but it set the appliance standards that appliance companies around the world copied. There was nothing GE Appliances could do to be more competitive as it was at the top of the game.GE Appliances is now in the hands of a foreign company. The world’s largest appliance manufacturing facility, under one roof in Kentucky, now being owned by China. Yes, Communist China now owns U.S. soil and the most renowned appliance company that ever existed.Haier was worried that people of the U.S. would balk at buying communist built appliances and made an agreement to pay General Electric a licensing fee to continue to use the famous logo of GE, and the name “GE Appliances.”GE built appliances no longer exist. Appliances now with the GE logo on them have never seen a GE employee. Haier-Qingdao was known for making low cost, low quality appliances. They specialized in the small compact/dorm sized refrigerators sold at Wal-Mart.Haier was thrilled to be given the opportunity to buy GE Appliances. Overnight Haier went from being perceived as a second class discount store refrigerator maker to the most recognized name in appliances in the world.GE has lost all of its consumer industries now and one by one will slowly lose the rest of its divisions, just as Westinghouse did. GE is weaving the exact pattern of Westinghouse as is now writhing in pain as the company is dying a slow lingering death. The sale of the highly profitable and competitive GE Appliances, which was done in an attempt to revive General Electric, was akin to putting a band-aid on a severed artery. When one is dying they will try most anything for a chance of sustaining life, and that my friend was why GE Appliances was sold.Unfortunately, it was too little, too late. GE built appliances are now only a memory. Soon, the the entire General Electric Company may become nothing more than a distant memory as well. A testament to the greed and egotism of a little man, Jack Welch, who destroyed one of the greatest U.S. corporations that ever existed.A sad demise for GE Appliances and a sad demise for General Electric.
