NYC, particularly Brooklyn, has an overwhelming presence in the world of American Orthodox and Hasidic Jews, with significant, particular offshoots upstate in Orange and Rockland counties (the Satmar communities in Monsey and Kiryas Joel, and the Skverer in New Square are the most notable) and in Lakewood, New Jersey (a major yeshiva center and hub of orthodoxy). There are other notable communities on Long Island (the Five Towns, for instance) and in the NYC tri-state area. Two other major centers in the U.S. are L.A. This Metro area comprises all of New York City, the following Counties in New York State; Dutchess, Nassau, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Suffolk, Ulster and Westchester; the following Counties in New Jersey; Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Hunterdon, Mercer, Middlesex, Monmouth, Morris, Ocean, Passaic, Somerset, Sussex and Union; in Connecticut: Fairfield, Litchfield and New Haven and in Pennsylvania, Carbon, Lehigh, Monroe, Northampton and Pike. Yes, Long Island City became part of New York City in 1898 when all of Queens County was annexed into the city. Jersey City being in a totally different state (New Jersey) can not and will not ever be annexed into New York City. New Jersey law will not allow such an act.

It suffers greatly from being spread across three states with conflicting agendas.But the “natural limit” of this thought experiment is the BOSWASH Megalopolis - every county between the Greater Boston, MA area to the Washington DC Metro Area including Northern Virgina. When you include directly adjacent counties as well as ones otherwise isolated from the rest of the US, it contains parts of 12 statesThis is more than half of the original thirteen colonies. This territory has more people than California, which has the 8th largest economy in the world.So yes, this tiny - TINY portion of the countryCould do just fine.
