What is the most frustrating way you have missed an airline flight?

This one is embarrassing for me! I was traveling from the US to Zambia, and had to make a connecting flight in Nairobi, Kenya. I was by myself at the time, and arrived at my departure gate with just over two hours to spare. I located a spot right in front of the gate and decided to get some shuteye. Now for a little back story. I’ve traveled overseas a fair amount in my life for missions work. The trouble is, I get very little sleep when I fly due to one important little problem: I find it nearly impossible to sleep sitting up! Naturally, this presents a problem on long flights with no way to really stretch out (I’ve never been able to afford Business or First Class).Anyway, a couple of hours in the airport to stretch out seemed nice! I parked myself literally within 15 feet of the desk at my departure gate and laid down using my backpack for a pillow. I should also mention that I had gotten into the habit of sleeping with earplugs and found it difficult to sleep without them. This was mistake #1. I opted not to set an alarm on my cell phone, because I didn’t think I would oversleep. Mistake #2. Finally, I noticed there were periodic announcements over the PA system, and I figured they would wake me up when it was time to leave. Mistake #3.By now, you’ve probably guessed that I overslept! My flight left at 10:20am, and I woke up at 11:45am. Yup…definitely overslept! Not to worry…I would simply present my plight to the gate agent and she would tell me what to do. In doing that, I discovered that the next flight to Ndola, Zambia didn't leave until Thursday (this was Monday)…and it was already full!Oh boy…not good! The airport staff was very helpful, though, and I was able to get my flight switched to Lusaka, Zambia for $50. They also provided me with lunch and let me stay in the Premier Lounge where I was able to use some Internet. The bad news is that my flight didn't leave for another 8 hours. Fortunately, I had the the cell phone number of the missionary I was going to be visiting stored in my cell phone, and the airport let me use a phone to contact him (I did not have cell service overseas). The funny thing is that he was watching the plane land that I supposed to be on, when I called to let him know that I wasn't actually on it!In the end, it meant my friend had to drive 4 hours to Lusaka to pick me up, instead of only 45 minutes to Ndola. The blessing was that my bags still went through to Ndola safe and sound, and I had enough belongings in my carry on to get me through until we could pick them up.It was definitely an embarrassing experience, but one that ended better than it could have! And I did get those two hours of sleep…

What is the background of people that want to solve social causes?

I have interviewed a lot of social entrepreneurs. The backgrounds always vary but the vast majority have their “ah ha” moment when traveling.Someone like Mallika Dutt lived in India and fights for human rights because the culture their tends to abuse woman.Kenton Lee was traveling in Nairobi Kenya and noticed kids either had no shoes or they were way too small. Now he is founder of The Shoe That Grows.Every background is unique but plays into their current mission. What is common between them is certain characteristics - courage, persistance, and passion for what they do. These are what you hear all the time about success but not everyone can apply them. On top of it, you need to be innovative. Solving social challenges requires new thinking. I mentioned the Show That Grows. Mallika Dutt used pop music video to appeal new ideas to the community and shift the cultural norm. She did that against the direction of Virgin records. That’s courage.Dr Alasdair Harris of Blue Ventures had to really innovate a new solution to reinvigorate the marine life from overfishing in Madagascar all while creating a smart revenue model using eco-tourism to support and scale up.Jake Orak left a high paying corporate job in the US for a $500/mo job in Vietnam to explore new options. This led him to discover his idea for Ethnotek Bags today which supports cultures in multiple countries now.Tons of good insights, check out ur podcast here and subscribe Change Creator Podcast: Better Business. Will the Somali president go to war with Kenya?

You have to understand each countries position first and why the tensions are running high.Kenya apart of the AU Army coalition to fight terrorism is in Somalia as its sole mission is to protect it’s Kenyan citizens from Alshabab terrorists groups from staging an attack in Kenya. Like the Nairobi West Gate mall that killed several hundred people and the perpetrators were not caught. So that’s Kenya’s main concern is terrorists from Somalia making incursions into Kenya and blowing up and slaughtering it’s citizens.Somalia invited and appreciated Kenya’s efforts and joint ventures into fighting terrorists within Somalia and greatly appreciated their neighbor’s helping hand. The reason why Alshabab attacked Kenya was because Kenyan troops were actively raping Somali women and killing innocent people abusing them and falsely accusing them of being Alshabab. So Alshabab decided to retaliate and show its strength against attacking the heart of its capital, the West Gate mall.Somalia stood with Kenya in that difficult time and provided support to its neighbors and intelligence officials decided it was best to share information to avoid such tragedies. So they were comrades in Arms and fought together in the sands of Somalia against a well funded extremist terrorists. However, Somalia felt betrayed and disgusted when Kenya started drilling in its maritime territory. Kenya was very aggressive in trying it’s best to justify its actions and the international criminal justice system the ICC was supposed to resolve the dispute in Somalia maritime borders. While initially relationships soured they still were in cooperation to defeat Alshabab. Kenya kept being aggressive in the maritime dispute even sending ships to safe guard it’s interests. Somalia responded with Turkish military contract and navy and the Kenyans backed down. The ICC ruled that both should seek cooperation and mutually benefit since they’re neighbors.Somalia also felt betrayed when Kenyan troops actually were killing Somali regional troops and raping women. So Somalia gave Kenyan troops 24 hour notice to leave Somalia immediately. Since their mass rapes and killings of Somali civilians was a bitter betrayal. Somalia officials were recalled from Kenya and the same happened with Kenyan officials in Somalia. Now Kenya boldly refused leaving Somalia’s territory claiming they hadn’t received notification to withdraw their troops from AU joint command and officials. They are there to protect Kenya from any further Alshabab incursions and stubbornly refused to leave Somalia.A few days ago Kenyan troops and Somalia troops clashed at the border. Their was a Somali lady being harassed by Kenyan troops and Somalia troops intervened after an argument they exchanged fire and Kenyan troops suffered more casualties.Somalia troops might respond very aggressively to any Kenyan troops since they were given 24 hrs to leave Somalia and haven’t. However, Kenya knows Somalia has had long enduring wars and struggles and wouldn’t want to have the same conditions plaguing both countries. So diplomacy is key but war might be a possibility.
