Do students get a better education at elite universities?

Since 19 of the Top 19 colleges, as per US News and World Report are private, absolutely (and there are some elite and large public schools too like UCLA, Berkeley, Michigan etc).you get what you pay for…usually. You get smaller classes, smaller university size and great professors some with Nobel prize winners as your prize.smarter students to learn with; to become friends with and to network with. That’s smart right?more research opportunities and the ability to study under a top professor is usually a great way to learn.staff that is there to cater to your needsinternship opportunities are more readily available and many ar top companies and government think tanks and often times in your field of interest.A wide range of fascinating classesMany great study abroad opportunities and a chance to learn in a fun foreign setting at schools including Oxford or Cambridge.A direct line into top grad school or the work force. Instead of learning the art of applying for jobs, you’ll be receiving them.if you can afford it, private schools are better than taking a 1000 person chemistry class. Sure they have some larger classes but the student ratio can be 4 to 1 or far less than 28 to 1 at many public schools. Sure that doesn’t mean 7x more learning but there is some tangible evidence knowing your prof on a personal basis and having a one to one ratio or one to four more literally. That relationship results in more research opportunities (learning); more jobs and better letters or recommendations and most likely select calls from the top professors to the elite schools you want to get your PhD at. You can’t teach that? Going here gets you the best professors, jobs students and grad schools and networking. It’s an elite way or stepping stone into the world of higher education or finance.I took classes at public schools including UCLA, CSUN, Pierce Community College, Pasadena City College, two years at UC Santa Barbara and finally at private USC where I graduated and there is absolutely no comparison in the caliber of teaching and educational content provided at USC. I was on a first name basis with every professor, small classes, great letters for law school and It’s like the difference between high school and college and then you get Four Seasons resort staffing for internships and any issues you have with administrative issues. Everyone here is here to help you have a first rate experience. It’s that good in retrospect.it’s amazing but privacy has its costs and then some. I believe it’s worth it in the eye of the beholder (and It’s not for everyone and state schools have great advantages too) but a top 30 education is worth every penny in my opinion. It’s educational on another level. But you can also get a phenomenal education in state for much less. Most of all I hope that helps and good luck wherever you decide to attend. The effort put into whatever school you attend will far surpass the opportunities available to you and why at top phd programs you will see students who took advantage of their educational experience. But that is more a “private” matter.

What is it like to be Asian-American or of Asian origin in America?

First, it's very hard to speak for everyone. There's a million different Asian experiences for all the communities and generations here. I was born in the US and most of the Asians I know from school are 1.5 or 2nd generation Chinese Americans, but this definitely does not typify the experience since ~65% of Asian Americans are born abroad and Chinese only make up 23% of the Asian population.Geography. I grew up in Santa Barbara, California and later moved to LA: first to South Pasadena then to Arcadia. Santa Barbara was about 3% Asian, South Pasadena 25% and Arcadia 50%. Even within Southern California, this made a world of a difference.Language and Ethnicity. Early childhood I didn't grasp the concept of race. I went to a predominately white elementary school, but had a distinct conception of Chinese and American culture from my family. I remember grouping myself as only American thinking it was my birthright, and told my parents things like: "You should let me live like the other kids and give me allowance! It's not fair I just want to do normal things!" I looked different from the other kids at school but the cultural aspect was bigger than the racial aspect to me. I was too young to really grasp the implications then, and no one really talked about it to me.My grandparents lived with me for a while as a young child, and I grew up speaking Chinese at home. At preschool I started speaking English outside of home, and around this time they went back to China. In Kindergarten and later, I steadily spoke less and less Chinese at home - I had little incentive to keep learning due to lack of relatives who only spoke Chinese - and I felt the best way to develop and fit in at school was to learn English well. Like many ABC kids, I went to Chinese school but thought the English alphabet was easier than a bunch of complicated characters. I was told to 吃苦 (eat bitter) but eventually stopped going to Chinese school. In college, I started listening to Chinese music and ended up taking two classes for Chinese native speakers to learn how to write and read. I noticed how unfluent my speech was and now hear my parents saying "I told you so". Today tell myself to keep studying and using Chinese, but it's very hard to motivate myself. Sometimes I feel shame for being so bad at Chinese, and it's one of those things that continues to bother me to this day. With Chinese American friends I never speak Chinese except for jokes or when talking about food.Family. I don't have relatives I speak to on a frequent basis other than my parents, everyone else is in China. Thanksgivings and Christmases were just with my mom and dad and perhaps a friend's family. We'll talk with my grandparents on a regular basis but in daily life, my entire family is just 3 people. Writing this now makes me feel bad about never getting to know my cousins properly, outside of those few visits to China. However this varies a lot: Many families have the majority of their recent relatives immigrated especially Taiwanese and Vietnamese, simply because of a longer or more intense history of immigration.Asian communities. After Santa Barbara, it was a shock to see places like Valley Boulevard in Monterey Park lined with endless Chinese restaurants, where teenagers my age spoke Chinese fluently, where the gas station would have 3 Chinese newspapers, and where if you really did speak no English you could take care of everyday needs (banking, housing, supermarkets, etc.) with no problem. It's crazy how concentrated some of these enclaves are, for instance a very specific subgroup (1st generation Taiwanese American) makes up nearly 25% of San Marino, California. There are actually a lot of places like this in California, and many first generation immigrants settle here for cultural familiarity and good schools. An interesting article on the changes in Los Angeles' communities: "Asian American youth culture comes of age in the "626"' http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-valley-asians-20120827,0,2603046.storyHigh School. Being Asian didn't change much about fitting in socially because by then I had already moved to Arcadia. I dealt with the classic teenage angst and search for identity, but I'm sure it would have been a lot different had I been one of a few Asian kids in the class with questions of being a stereotypical science geek.Academics and college. The "Tiger Mom" mentality was highly prevalent in Arcadia, home to upper-middle class Chinese immigrants who saw getting their kids into a good school as a point of family pride. My parents defined Ivy League + Stanford + MIT + Caltech + two UCs as "acceptable colleges" and told me: "We came all the way to America so you could have this chance. Don't slack off, you better make the most of it since we never could during the Cultural Revolution."There's at least five SAT/AP prep centers in Arcadia, which many of my friends went to for >$2K a year. http://www.hs2academy.com/ Even though a visible minority of parents acted unreasonably Tiger Mom-like, it was just a more controlled, education focused upbringing with the typical emphasis on grades and learning an instrument, without the extreme histrionics of Amy Chua.Personality. Today I often debate with friends the effect of this environment, on how it funnels us into stereotypical roles and well paying jobs with minimal thoughts to creativity or risk taking (see entrepreneurship). We care too much about tests as a way of proving ourselves, which can make for boring stories, and that's not how the real world works out. I remember a really good answer on Quora about this...Rebellion against parents.Identity within Asian groups. The high school in Arcadia was over half Asian, and as a result there wasn't an "Asian group". However, subgroup identity was still there: If you spoke with an accent, you were immediately thought of as a "fob". "Fobs" were only 10% or so of my high school, but most people saw of them as culturally outside, since they were the ones who would speak Chinese at school.Everyone was Americanized to some degree and the Asians spoke English with a typical Southern California accent. You would only be accused of being whitewashed if everything about your taste implied rejecting the Asian side of yourself and you exclusively hung out with non Asians. Eating and appreciating food is important, knowing a bit about your mother tongue/culture, and knowing distinctly Asian American things like Wong Fu Productions. Each group would joke at the others for being too white washed (you can't speak Chinese? Noob!), too fobby (speak engrish you're making us look bad!), too boring/typical (you got good grades and went to UCLA like everyone else, never living outside the bubble), too stuck up, etc. It's a bit silly.Ten years of living in a suburb of LA that was 50% Asian made me forget to what it meant to be a minority. You begin to wonder why there's so little non-Asian diversity. Why is everyone (almost everyone) in Orchestra, Math Team, etc. Asian? How do you get exposed to mainstream American culture in a city like this?Identity in relation to America. Overall I believe most Americans treat Asians well and are trying not to be racist, but I get that Asians are often treated as always "from elsewhere"/foreigners. A lot of things become more clear when you go to college especially if it's out of state. Things like "bamboo ceiling", exclusion from groups, or discrimination I rarely thought of in LA. When you're a visible minority little things matter more like "Why's your nose so flat?" on the playground as a kid, teachers seeing the "smart Asian overachiever" in 1st grade, to people trusting you less to be President.Microaggressions. As an extra note, people seem to have an easy time making racist remarks about Asian people since we're seen as quiet and not aggressive. I've had people loudly comment on Asians (and my group) when they can see us clearly sitting nearby with rude comments. I get the typical "Ching chong me love you long time" taunts too. This goes deeper into things like workplace culture, stereotypes in media, etc. Some Asians will be the type to just brush it off and say stop complaining and move on, pick your battles. This especially applies to incidents like media portrayals of Asians, the "Chink in the armor" headline for Jeremy Lin and trading out Asian characters for white actors in 21. Others argue that if we can't even speak out against issues like these, negative stereotypes will continue to flourish in the American eye.Racism within Asians + intra-Asian racism. More common among 1st generation: I hear things like "Japanese people are evil for attacking China". Add cynical race relation comments about minorities and white people in the US. When does it stop being politically incorrect and become racism? Is this what people of any race do when they're only around people of the same group?Asian pride. I used to hate this phrase since first I saw myself as American first, not wanting to attract attention, and then believing it unnecessary in my LA years when I lived in an Asian majority area - it felt like saying "white pride" although the intentions are usually different. Now I understand why it's popular. It's a simple affirmative expression of identity and culture, especially among 2nd generation kids whose race and Americanized Asian culture affects them more than growing up in their native country. See Why are Asian Americans so incredibly enamored by Jeremy Lin? and supporting Youtube stars like Kina Grannis.Affirmative action. Asians US don't generally benefit from affirmative action because they are more successful than statistically average - the "model minority" effect. There's a long complex debate on this with plenty of Asians who agree and who disagree. The question is whether the benefits like increased diversity in student body justify the means, how much help underrepresented groups need, and whether affirmative action is to right discrimination faced or increase group representation.I've been on both sides of the fence for this issue, but I lean against race-based affirmative action in college admissions as it works now, which despite good intentions ends up discriminating against Asian applicants somehow. I still support admissions policies that are designed to account for economic disadvantages and less wealthy backgrounds.Cultural tension and fitting in as adults. When a city goes from 95% white to 40% white in 50 years, there's bound to be an unspoken tension in the air about the new arrivals. To a lot of people on both sides, it's just hard to relate. I know many immigrants who just have a hard time fitting into mainstream American society. They may make friends but it's much more difficult. They will never speak English with no accent and the most happy path for them is often living in an Asian community or moving back to their original country. Quite a few of my friends' parents bounce back and forth between Taiwan and the US, either holding jobs/business connections there or considering moving back.Politics. Asians tend to vote Democratic but are relatively politically inactive - the 2008 exit polls show 2% Asian voters. Nearly two thirds are born abroad and thus need to apply for citizenship, and Asians are concentrated in states that are less important for the electoral college: Hawaii, New York, California are solid blue.
