It tests for the virus that causes Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA) for which there is no cure. It is contagious and can be fatal. Death rate from EIA is estimated to be around 30%. Most vaccinations are done in Spring.

So that can cost a lot, and not just in money.But if you are planning to transport via boat or plane, the costs ramp up significantly. I’m not sure the exact cost, but recently I learned that to fly a horse from Canada to New Zealand would cost roughly 25,000 dollars, and that’s without any special extras like tranquilizers, special feed, anything.So a truck and trailer is probably the most cost effective way to go lol.

A ‘Coggins’ paper just indicates the horse has had a test for a contagious disease of horses called Equine Infectious Anemia.These days, most veterinarians use an online service to email the test results to you.You should never, ever buy a horse in the US(or other countries where it is recommended) without getting a Coggins paper that is clearly for that horse, and is with the horse, when you buy it. Do not agree to have it sent to you later. The test should have been done recently and the horse should be clearly identified, with everything on th paper verified to apply to that horse. These days the paper has a picture of the horse on it, so people will have a tough time trying to use another horse’s Coggins paper.Why? Because EIA is a very, very serious illness. If you bring a horse with EIA into your barn, all the horses in the barn may have to be strictly quarantined or euthanized.Never transport a horse or allow it into your stable before seeing a valid, recent Coggins paper for that horse. Ideally, all horses that are transported anywhere should have Coggins papers with them.Ask your horse veterinarian what vaccinations a horse should have to be sold/bought.Other ‘papers’ could be:Registration in a breed organization. All horses are not registered, so not all horses have registration papers. But if a horse is sold to you as being a ‘purebred such and such,’ always request the registration paper and a transfer of ownership form (if applicable), and check with the registry beforehand to determine if the registration is valid. Do not buy a horse that is represented as purebred without getting the registration paper. Do not trust anyone who says they will send the registration later.A health certificate, meaning a vet inspected the horse and looked for obvious health problems. The health certificate should be recent and should obviously be for that horse.A passport. More expensive horses are often registered with the FEI (International Equestrian Federation). Passports should be up to date and show flu vaccinations.
