In the US, the only equipment that can not be sold to the public is weapons that it would not otherwise be legal for a civlian to own. Fully automatic rifles manufactured after 1986, mostly. Anything else can be legally sold to the public, but if it is used to impersonate an officer (pulling over cars with red/blue flashers, etc.) that is a separate crime.Some states or cities may have laws about specific items (fitting functional lights and sirens, or official looking vehicle decals, and so on). No one from the eastern seaboard would be confused and wondering why there's a California cop if they see a CHP vehicle and they're in New England, and vice versa, no one would be asking why there's a Connecticut cop giving them a speeding ticket in Los Angeles if they saw CSP.It's not like once someone uses an acronym no one else can ever use it after all…
