What is the mechanism that provides a state old age pension in the US? Is it earned throughout your working life as in the UK?

According to the information that I found onSocial Security HistoryNumber of States with Old Age Pensions are 28 according to this document. They give pensions to those who cannot support them selfs. This is not a complete list, it is a list of states that are in the document and it is very likely that the data that is in the document is not up to date.North DakotaHawaiiIndianaDelawareIdahoMontanaOhioUtahArizonaCaliforniaColoradoMaineMarylandMichiganMinnesotaNevadaNew JerseyOregonPennsylvaniaWest VirginiaWisconsinWyomingAlaskaNew HampshireConnecticutMassachusettsNew York

Is it still true that most Canadians would love to live in the USA?

It never was true.I go back a certain ways. The USA probably reached the peak of its popularity in Canada before the War in Vietnam and the assassination of John F. Kennedy. Even then most Canadians didn’t have a passionate desire to live in the USA, although a road trip from Winnipeg to Miami was a lot of fun. I remember Howard Johnson’s when they actually had all those flavours! It would be nice if we had statistics for how many Canadians at any given time might consider a move to the USA but, as far as I know, we don’t.Of course, if you can’t qualify for a green card, this whole question is hypothetical.Canadians Who Aren’t Ever Going to LeaveThere are some groups of Canadians who would have no interest at all in moving to the USA.-Most francophones. The Quebecois if anything tend to have warmer feelings towards the USA than a lot of other Canadians do. They might like to spend a couple of months in Fort Lauderdale in mid-winter but not go live there.Vrai Souche Quebecois (That is, Quebecois who are descended from French settlers who came to Canada from the 1530’s until Britain defeated France in Canada in 1763.) tend to have an almost family sense of themselves. They have a very well-defined culture with intensely active popular media. They don’t want to leave that. There are francophones concentrated in parts of several other provinces, particular the Franco-Ontarians of northeastern Ontario and the Acadians of New Brunswick. They have been in Canada for many generations. Their identity and community is really, really important to them. These different francophones comprise about one fifth of Canada’s entire population. Then there are the aboriginals peoples of Canada. “Status” Indians actually have the right to move to the USA by virtue of Jay’s Treaty. Most have no interest. The aboriginal peoples of Canada have been struggling to keep what is left of their land and recover as much of their culture as they possibly can. They are determined to carry on.This is another five percent of the Canadian population. What about the rest? Why Does Anybody Move Anywhere?Canadians like others often care a lot about their family, their friends and their community. Even English-speaking Canadians can have strong regional identities.Last week I was startled to read this report from Statistics Canada, the Government of Canada’s central statistical agency. Of course it is their property:Study: Barriers to Labour Mobility in Canada“While 32% of unemployed Canadians reported that nothing would stand in their way of accepting a job in another province, the remaining 68% said they would not move if they were offered a job in another province.Family and friends were the primary reason, with one-half of unemployed individuals saying they would not move to another province for work because they wish to stay close to family and friends, must provide care for relatives, or because their spouse or children would not want to move.”That’s what I kind of thought but even I was surprised by how many unemployed Canadians wouldn’t leave their own province. And:“The survey also asked about the prospect of mobility within the respondent's province. Among unemployed Canadians, 43% reported that nothing would stand in their way of accepting a job in another city within their home province while 57% said they would not move.Again, family and friends was the most frequently cited factor, with 36% of unemployed individuals saying they would not accept a job elsewhere in their province for this reason. Almost 15% said they would not move within their province because moving would be too demanding for them, housing would be too expensive elsewhere, or moving would not be feasible for financial reasons. Meanwhile, 6% reported that they would not move for other reasons.”A lot of unemployed Canadians won’t even leave their home town, never mind move to Colorado!Canada has a better welfare state than the USA. It’s not so bad here, even if you are unemployed.Think about the Canadians who actually have a job. It’s like paradise!Other No-Go CanadiansIf I am permitted, I would like to talk about some Canadian socio-political realities.English-speaking Canada really got going after the American Revolution when American colonists who were loyal to the Crown (There were a fair number of them.) fled north. There they became the socially-honoured United Empire Loyalists, more or less the English-Canadian core population. Their numbers were augmented by later British immigrants who were also loyal to the monarchy. Quite a few of them were Protestant Ulstermen, often fanatically loyal. There have been various permutations and combinations over time, some of which I describe in other Answers. However this initial core population and their descendants have been responsible for much of contemporary Canadian culture. Some features of this real English-Canada:-We think the USA is kind of a mess.-The country is what matters. Big cities are kind of American, whether you have to live in one or not.-We hate hand guns. No Canadian gets the right to bear arms.-We believe in feminism.-Religion has no place in public life.-You don’t have freedom of speech if you are going to harass or humiliate somebody or some identifiable group.-There is nothing at all wrong in keeping your opinions to yourself, except if you need to advocate for a social cause.-Compromise, compromise, compromise!-White ethnicity is not legitimate.-The Province of Alberta is too American so it’s bad.-TV evangelism is fraud.I am primarily describing middle class. English-Canadian core values. However our Prime Minister says all Canadians ought to be middle class. He’s saying that because many, many Canadians agree.Even among working class English-speaking Canadians there are some deeply held values that don’t fit in with American life:-Hockey is the basis of life.-Beer matters and American beer isn’t beer.-We like our employment insurance, free medical care, subsidized education and social housing.-The USA is kind of messed up.-Hunting rifles are OK but why does any non-police, non-military Canadian need a hand gun?-The country is better than the city. These folks aren’t that keen on a lot of things to do with the USA. Unless they are going to be paid a lot more than what they can make in Canada, the USA does not have much allure.Sitting on the FenceBut, surely there are a lot of Canadians who would move to California in a flash if they got the right offer?Let’s Price Up.I am too old now but, say you are still in your career lifeYou think your net income would be higher in the USA. However, let’s look at the negative side of the move-to-America balance sheet.-You need private medical insurance. To be equal to what you get in Canada it would have to have full, no deductible coverage for catastrophic health events.-Worried about those hand guns? How about paying to live in a gated community?-You have kids. However, where that neat job is in the USA, the public schools are no good. Private schools cost.-Retired Canadians get the Canada Pension Plan and the Old Age Pension. if you retire in the USA will American social security give you more? If not, you will need to put a lot of money in 401(k) plans and other private investments. You might not be living the American high life after all.But Surely, Some Canadians Really, Really Want to Head South?Of course they do. The winters are miserable here. Not everybody likes living in a hold-your tongue society. There are still quite a few evangelical and social conservative Canadians who might be a lot happier in America. And then there are the bottom-liners. Depending upon what sort of job you can do, you may still be way, way ahead in the USA, particularly in a low tax juridiction. In the USA you may have career chances you never would have in little Canada. You might be more than able to cover the additional costs of private medical insurance, private schools and a secure, gated community. And, the Ethnics of Canada, White and Not White? In other answers I have commented about the suppression of white ethnicity in Canada. There may be Italian, Polish and other white ethnic Canadians who might feel more respected and included in the USA.I’m Jewish. There are way, way more Jewish people in the USA than in Canada. American Jews have much more political, economic and cultural power than Canadian Jews do.I have a lot of family in the USA. From experience I know that I could fit in rather easily. I already have the appropriate cultural knowledge. I might have to push myself to talk louder and actually volunteer my opinions but I could handle it. Also, I hate winter. But then there’s that wonderful government medical insurance. In Canada I can be just as sick in hospital as I can possibly be and not pay a thing. I’m old so this really matters.I can’t see myself packing heat in my old age. Hand guns creep me out and I am not going to lug one around so I can stand my ground. If I can’t take the winters anymore maybe I could look at some alternatives. How about Australia? It’s a long way away but when you get there it’s a lot safer than many, many US places. The range of mainstream political opinion is not very large, just like Canada. However a Muslim-Canadian might not see my American incentives. The USA has become kind of Islamophobic. There are a fair number of Americans who want to make their negative view of Muslims very clear, not infrequently waving an open carry weapon around. If I was a Muslim-Canadian I might be pretty happy to stay here. The USA reflects itself in the eyes of individual Canadians in different ways. A lot of Canadians just don’t like what they think the USA is, fear the financial consequences of a move or, like people everywhere, just want to stay put.Martin LevineADDITIONAL CONTENT: This is a comment dialogue on December 13, 2017Hi Martin - thanks for your reply. Maybe you could set my mind at ease by giving examples of what exactly people have gotten in trouble for saying in Canada? And when did this start happening, and why? I suspect this is a recent development?Hi Alex. It's not that new.Of course Canada has one criminal code, the federal one. Provinces do not have the constitutional authority to create criminal laws.Wikipedia gives quite a good summary of hate speech laws in Canada, including the Criminal Code of Canada and others:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ha...“Sections 318, 319, and 320 of the Criminal Code forbid hate propaganda.[3] "Hate propaganda" means "any writing, sign or visible representation that advocates or promotes genocide or the communication of which by any person would constitute an offence under section 319."Section 318 prescribes imprisonment for a term not exceeding five years for anyone who advocates genocide. The Code defines genocide as the destruction of an "identifiable group." The Code defines an "identifiable group" as "any section of the public distinguished by colour, race, religion, ethnic origin or sexual orientation."Section 319 prescribes penalties from a fine to imprisonment for a term not exceeding two years for anyone who, by communicating statements in any public place, incites hatred against any identifiable group where such incitement is likely to lead to a breach of the peace.Under section 319, an accused is not guilty: (a) if he establishes that the statements communicated were true; (b) if, in good faith, the person expressed or attempted to establish by an argument an opinion on a religious subject or an opinion based on a belief in a religious text; (c) if the statements were relevant to any subject of public interest, the discussion of which was for the public benefit, and if on reasonable grounds he believed them to be true; or (d) if, in good faith, he intended to point out, for the purpose of removal, matters producing or tending to produce feelings of hatred toward an identifiable group in Canada.”Section 319 exemptions are hard to prove:In Canada (Human Rights Commission) v. Taylor, [1990] 3 S.C.R. 892 at 902, the Supreme Court said hate propaganda denotes any expression that is "intended or likely to circulate extreme feelings of opprobrium and enmity against a racial or religious group".[6] The Supreme Court of Canada, by a bare 4-3 plurality, upheld the constitutionality of section 319 in R. v. Keegstra [1990] 3 S.C.R. 697.[7]Both the federal and provincial governments have human rights codes:“Alberta's Human Rights Act[17] forbids discrimination upon the common grounds except for political opinion, but also on account of "source of income". The Act forbids a publication or display that "is likely to expose a person or a class of persons to hatred or contempt". An adjudicator has no authority to order that a respondent pay to the complainant "emotional damages" or pay a penalty. The authority responsible for the Act is the Alberta Human Rights and Citizenship Commission (AHRCC).“Manitoba's The Human Rights Code[24] allows an adjudicator to order inter alia that a respondent pay damages for injury to dignity, feelings or self-respect in an amount that the adjudicator considers "just and appropriate", and to pay a penalty or exemplary damages (up to $2000 in the case of an individual respondent; up to $10,000 in any other case) if malice or recklessness is involved. Manitoba's Code is unique in having an "analogous grounds" provision. Complaints can be based not only on the listed grounds (such as sex, age, national origin, etc.), but also on grounds analogous to the listed ones. For example, the Manitoba Human Rights Commission currently accepts complaints based on gender identity.”Wikipedia also reports on limits to free speech in Canada:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fr...“Freedom of speech in Canada is not absolute; Section 1 of the Charter allows the government to pass laws that limit free expression so long as the limits are reasonable and can be justified in a free and democratic society.[1][2] This can often be the subject of controversy as some feel the conditions for reasonable justification are vague, granting the government an unreasonable amount of control over freedom of speech. Others feel that such restrictions are necessary in order to balance the fundamental freedoms of one party against those of another, and to otherwise limit political violence and tyranny of the majority. Hate speech (which refers to the advocacy and incitement of genocide or violence against a particular defined racial, ethnic, gender, sexual, religious or other identifiable group),[3][4] and obscenity (a broad term referring to literature that is unreasonable, dangerous or intensely inappropriate to society at large, such as child pornography or fraudulent medication intended to promote sexual virility),[5] are two examples that gain significant attention from the media and in public discourse.[2]This is part of the Canadian “freedom from”.Maclean's Magazine is generally considered the top Canadian news magazine. Here is what they say about Canadian political correctness. This article is their property:http://www.macleans.ca/news/cana...You can Google other articles on this topic.Canada is a watch what you say society. A lot of what is said in the USA would land you in jail here.Martin

Interesting Questions...!?: If you could get away with one murder in your lifetime without any legal, social, or emotional repercussions, would you kill someone?

Absolutely. But I can’t. He died of old age.He was a Catholic priest. A friend of mine in college was an altar boy while this man was a senior member of the parish. He had become withdrawn before high school, then reclusive. He hung himself when he was 26. He had told family members about the priest, but no one believed him. That priest baptized my goddaughter. Soon after, he retired, and a few months later died of natural causes at a rest home in Colorado. That was in 1995. In 1999, his estate was sued and it became known that he, along with several other priests, were being named in rape charges. (I am not certain what was hoped to be gained by naming the dead priest, maybe they had to even though there was no pension or property.) My dead friend’s sister finally believed the things her younger brother had said, the mother still doesn’t believe any allegations towards any priest at any archdiocese. So how would I kill Father Gerald Degnan? My friend Carl hung himself, but he carried the guilt with him for at least fifteen years. That is a lot of time when you only live to be 26.Murder is wrong. Degnan is dead. And yet I think of that filthy rapists’ hands holding my goddaughter underwater for the baptism. I think of how Carl stopped making eye contact with so many people after 6th grade.So. If I could do such a thing, if I could keep the above images in my head and my heart, I would kill Degnan. The first priest who went to prison after the Boston archdiocese scandal just before 9/11, a guy named Geoghan, was stabbed to death by an inmate. The rapist priest was 83.Degnan? He was 80 when he left the parish. But if I knew then what we all found out four years later, and again keeping in mind the images of him holding my goddaughter, I’d really want to take a long time in watching him suffer, I would. In the end, I’d probably just kick him down the stairs into the alcove where the boys gave him blowjobs. And hope his neck breaks on the first try.

I found the software works with a bit of a fight but the company itself has suspicious behaviour and the support is zero if you have a problem! I say suspicious because as soon as i contacted support about my account with lifetime licences i purchased in 2013, the licences disappeared from my account, and they did not respond to my email. I say support as zero, as they did not respond to the above I also could not get any response regarding new software i purchased and paid for through paypal, I have presently opened a paypal dispute to see how that goes, they have not responded since opening the case over two weeks ago. to be frank i think CocoDoc is dead, they are just relying now on the software to bring more money in before they disappear I would be extremely cautious about spending any money with this company and/or software provider.
