Yes once I made an entire restaurant and the adjacent bar laugh, hoot and holler!I am from Maryland where Blue Point Crabs and their consumption is a near religious experience. Cracking crabs and eating them is a delightful ritual pursued throughout the warm weather season.Once while in college I was in New Orleans at a scientific meeting. We stayed in the French Quarter and spent every night exploring the restaurants, bars and festivities up and down the streets from music to dancing.One evening we found ourselves at a seafood restaurant where virtually all the other patrons were out of towners. I ordered a big basket of crabs and proceeded to show my friends from the Midwest the proper way to eat them. After the initial quiet things grew to a roar of laughter, banter and all around conviviality! A very memorable and delicious evening all around.

Sure, yes. And?You see, there is nothing much that can be done about it. The professors who interact with students in the interview round try to gauge if the students are interested in research, but it is easy to game such a system. There’s nothing more that the organisers can do, as they have always emphasised the reasoning behind the KVPY exam and subsequent fellowship.Further, for KVPY SA, often students do not have a clear picture in their heads about what they wish to pursue. In fact, even by the time the first round of KVPY SX is conducted, students often continue preparing for JEE/NEET because everyone else is. It is only later that they realise that they wish to pursue research, and engineering/medicine doesn’t fascinate them enough. One of my friends who had such a realisation said that it struck them only when they finally had the options in hand: one of the best medical colleges in India through NEET, or IISER Mohali through the KVPY, and they chose the latter. Another peer made a similar choice between IIT Delhi and IISER Mohali, and yet another between IIT Bombay and IISER Pune, choosing IISERs in each case (There have also been students who have chosen IISERs over IISc, and of course, vice-versa).So, how would you propose to bar students who are primarily focussed on JEE/NEET at the time of giving the KVPY, without permanently taking away the option from students like these? Remember, their only mistake was not coming to a decision more quickly.Next, if you are interested in research, you must understand and accept the fact that you’ll be dealing with immense competition. There are hundreds of students across the world, in your field of interest, with better access to resources, mentorship, research opportunities and funding. You will have to compete with them, in order to excel in research. For example, when you apply for a PhD, you will be competing with these students for the same set of positions! So extreme competition is normal, and you will sometimes lose out against your competitors. You would have to accept that, and keep looking for more opportunities.Lastly, sure, wanting to go to IISc is a nice goal to have, but say if you don’t get in. Does that mean you cannot do research? The answer is no.There are other national level institutions like IISERs, NISER, CEBS, IACS, etc., state colleges, and even some good private colleges where you can do your Bachelor’s. For your Master’s, you can again apply to a lot of good places in India and abroad, or if you do your Master’s at the same institute, you can apply for a PhD directly. And needless to say, a lot of students have gone down this path, and done really well. You must remember that IISc has started taking students for an undergraduate degree for just barely a decade! Even the oldest IISERs are less than 15 years old. People have been pursuing Bachelor’s in science before that, and continue to pursue it now, from other colleges.So not getting IISc is not the end of your dream of pursuing a career in research.I understand, it feels annoying that those who do not value the KVPY Fellowship that much, still give it, and treat it like a “practice test”. It would feel like a personal insult. But that’s how it is!And it is better for our own mental peace if we accept that, and keep trying to give our best in our attempts to fulfil our dreams.Good luck!

Setting multiple alarms because morning FR lectures are important as hell. If we miss the class, “naalayokon” keeps haunting in our dreams.Arranging papers in order and filing them neatly to avoid any hassle. Not to forget about the precision with which they are stapled together. Yes, we are that particular.It’s budget for other fellow Indians. It is BUDGET for us. We jot down amendments like hungry dogs because anything can be asked in paper.Doing cost benefit analysis even for buying a pair of shoes from Amazon.Day-dreaming about college life, and then saying khair chodo (just leave) while filing annual returns.Living on coffee/ tea during audit season/ exam days.Making timetables. We are pro at it. We have varieties. 2 yearly, yearly, quarterly, monthly, 15 days. We trick our brains to pass every 6 months..:PCalculating turnover of renowned faculties and thinking of teaching an easy subject..:PWondering whether Science- Maths was a better option than Commerce. And, why the fuck everyone lies about this course?Educating juniors about all the pros and cons of each level of the course. We act like their gurus, and it becomes our moral responsibility to show them the right path.Revising section numbers, recalling SA numbers, AS numbers while bathing/ walking. We are desperate to pass.Locking ourselves in a room while the world celebrates Diwali. All sort of lightening happens in your brain when you have exams next day. We don’t need more.Changing name to CA XYZ immediately after results on Facebook/Quora/Instagram/whatsapp/Aadhar Card/ PAN CARD/voter Id/email id/ Ration card. Earning that title is a matter of pride.Downloading 1000 PDF files from numerous platforms, and never checking them again. Kaam aayega, rakh lo.Searching for cheap photocopy alternatives to get those PDF’s printed. It’s another type of struggle.Developing thick skin after facing multiple failures. Yes, CA makes you tough. Most important lessons of life are learned in this journey.Take Care..:)
