PDF Editor FAQ

Is it possible to have a universal time for the entire planet?

Absolutely! In fact, the whole idea of time zones is just based on our unnatural need to say “The sun comes up in the morning, and the morning is a sliver of this artificial time scale from roughly 5AM to 9AM”Let’s say GMT was the time zone. I’m in Eastern Standard time (EST) which is GMT -5. That would mean that when it’s 9AM in England, it would be 4AM in Michigan. So, what time does the sun rise here in Michigan? Let’s say 7AM EST. That’s 12PM GMT.In other words, here in Michigan, the sun rises at 12PM. School starts at 1PM. People go to work at 2PM and leave at 10PM. Then they go home to have dinner at 11PM, watch game of thrones at 1AM, and hit the sack at 2AM.However, this trades one problem for another. At present, we have to “convert” time here to time there. In this “one world time zone solution”, we have to remember “what time is morning?” in Detroit or Dubai or Denali. In the end, we’re diurnal creatures. We have created a time system based on whether it’s light out or dark out. And it’s always dark on half the planet. So long as both of those things are true, we’ll either need time zones (our current solution) or a “morning time chart” (my proposed, but not really better) solution to figure out whether your international friends will be sleeping or not.Writing this answer made me think of a SWEET feature for future cell phones: Time Zone Consideration Calling / Texting. If I text someone in Ireland or Sri Lanka or Auckland, it would be awesome if my phone said “Are you sure you want to text this person? It’s 4AM there…”Tech Nerds: Make it happen!

What is the difference between Massachusetts Institute of Technology and IIT?

976 miles or 1570 kilometers is the distance difference between Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Illinois Institute of Technology.MIT is in Cambridge, MA while IIT is in Chicago, ILThe timezone of MIT is GMT-4 , while of IIT is GMT-5.The mascot of MIT is “Tim the Beaver” while IIT has “Talon the Hawk”.Lastly, our department (Dr. SSBUICET) was established in collaboration with IIT. No offense MIT.

Should India have multiple time zones? What would be the cost of implementing this change, and would the rate of return for implementing it be worth the initial investment?

Being born and brought up in Arunachal Pradesh which is the easternmost state of India, I think I need to answer this question. The picture above speaks the whole story.I have spent my whole childhood watching the sky getting dark at around 5–6 pm. Then when I moved to North India for further studies, I was astonished to see sun even after 7 pm sometimes. So, that’s how much variation in the time exists in our country. So Yes, we really need a different Time Zone for North-East Indian states. A time zone which should be an hour ahead of the rest of India, i.e. GMT+6:30. Currently the entire India follows GMT+5:30 timezone, which is not at all efficient for a country that extends 2933 km from east to west. The “Dong” village of Arunachal Pradesh sees sunrise 2 hours before “Guhar Moti” village of Gujarat. The actual timezone of North east is about an hour ahead of the GMT+5:30 which in turn results in wastage of a lot of daylight, thus affecting the productivity. Many government and private offices are forced to open even when the daylight gets low, which results in unnecessary power wastage. By changing the time zone, they will be able to make most of the natural daylight.Countries like United States, Australia already have multiple time-zones. Moreover, the concept of “Daylight savings” is used in United States in which they reset the clocks for different seasons. Its high time we should get multiple time-zones.EDIT: The reference of Daylight savings was meant only to emphasize that how countries opt for changes, while we are stuck with single timezone. There are disadvantages of daylight savings and I am not in support to implement such system in our country. Thanks to all the people who viewed and gave their valuable comments.
