Having seen pretty much everything there is to see in this beautiful country of ours, a coast-to-coast drive would be a montage of my favorite highlights. I’d plan an epic 2-week trek from New York to San Diego, ending in my favorite state of California. Along the way, I would insist on visiting some of my favorite states including Washington, Oregon, Montana, Idaho, and Utah. I would also avoid Florida, Nebraska, Louisiana, Texas, Mississippi, Missouri, and Alabama at all costs!New York City: I would begin with one of my favorite activities, watching the sunrise in Battery Park on a Sunday morning, about the quietest you’ll see Manhattan. Staring at the Statue of Liberty, I would visualize the American splendor and variety of sites I’m about to witness over the next two weeks.Leo’s Steak Shop, Folcroft, Pennsylvania: This Philly cheesesteak will change your life!Niagara Falls, New York: Even after 9 visits, the enormity and grandeur of the falls still leaves me in awe!Parma, Ohio: The 406th biggest city in America and the largest I haven’t visited.Midland, Michigan: The 872nd biggest city in America and the 2nd largest I haven’t visited.Sault Sainte Marie, Michigan: The only attractive part of Michigan.Mississippi River, St. Paul, Minnesota: This isn’t a stop, but rather a boundary. Once you’ve crossed it and enter the western half of America, the real fun begins!Mall of America, Bloomington, Minnesota: Since we’re in the area, this staggering shopping complex is something that everyone must see at least once!Engelstad Arena, Grand Forks, North Dakota: Certainly the most spectacular college athletic facility on the planet, an arena so incredible you’ll think it belongs to an NHL team or the Hall of Fame.Devils Lake, North Dakota: An intriguing and eerie site during the summer, my favorite scenic place in North Dakota.Enchanted Highway, Regent, North Dakota: A quirky array of artwork on a lonely highway in the middle of nowhere.Canyonlands, Arches, and Capitol Reef national parks, Utah: Now that we’ve made it to the true West, the most stunning scenery begins to unveil itself! This is where your adventure transforms from interesting to mind blowing!!! Utah is a bit out of the way on this itinerary, but worth every extra mile!!! The protected areas of Utah must be visited, more impressive than the Grand Canyon, very remote, and accompanied by the feeling of landing on another planet!Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming: What trip would be complete without seeing the most jaw-dropping nature in the 48 states? Geysers, pools, bears, and bison!Shoshone Falls, Idaho: This is one of many stunningly gorgeous spots along the famed Snake River, making Idaho one of America’s most beautiful states.Glacier National Park, Montana: It’s worth doing a 180 from Idaho and climbing back to the top of America. This massive park is my favorite place in all of America! The scenic beauty is breathtaking and the tourists number far fewer than Yellowstone. And how about a snowball fight in July?Grand Coulee Dam, Washington: The laser light show at night (viewed from the Grand Coulee Bridge or high upon a cliff at Steamboat Rock State Park) is absolutely one of the best-kept secrets in America. We discovered it accidentally, but I’d drive 200 miles out of my way to see it again!!! At this point, you truly feel like you’re taking the classic American road trip!!!Seattle, Washington: One of the most splendid big cities in America, with fabulous restaurants, impeccable seafood, wooded scenery, enormous mountains, and perfect summer weather. Add a drive out to Mount St. Helen’s and behold the overwhelming power of a volcanic eruption!Crater Lake National Park, Oregon: This spot isn’t nearly as heralded as Yellowstone and Yosemite, but it’s every bit as amazing, easily my 3rd favorite scenery in the U.S.!Pistol River Scenic Viewpoint, Oregon: Yet another well-kept secret in America, located in the southwest corner of Oregon and off the beaten path. If I won the lottery, this is where I would build my summer house!!! Stunning!Highway 1, Leggett to Dana Point, California: The only thing left to do now is to head south, hugging the coastline on the Pacific Coast Highway. You’ll visit San Francisco, Los Angeles, and have the option of continuing on to San Diego once the road ends. Along the way, you’ll be treated to the Golden Gate Bridge, Santa Barbara, Malibu, and some of the most legendary views of the Pacific Ocean ever portrayed!These are only 20 guide points from coast to coast, but you’ll find so much more along this drive! I’ve discovered that it’s not the points of interest, but the journey along the way. You’ll find great restaurants, beautiful scenery, untamed wildlife, and unexpected experiences.
