Remember, the core biotechnology field is a hardcore research-based field, it’s a very practical-oriented field and demands extensive hands-on training. Don’t assume that a bachelor degree in biotechnology will make you a Laboratory Scientist. A higher degree (Masters and PhD) are almost mandatory if you are keen to continue in the core biotechnology field. My advice to you would be to pursue a masters degree.Getting an engineering degree in biotech helps you stand out from the crowd of B.Sc’s and you are equivalent to a Masters degree holder for sure. As a B.Tech / BE degree holder, you can go for Higher Studies like M.tech or MS or an MBA and enter the world of Business.After you complete your Masters degree, you become eligible for most of the Research Jobs such as a Project fellow in CSIR, ICMR labs or Dbt sponsored projects (duration of project varies everywhere, so you need to abide by their terms and conditions) and even in top notch universities like BHU, JNU, etc in their specific departments, but again preference is given to candidates who have qualified any of the national level entrance exams like CSIR NET, GATE, DBT BET, ICMR JRF, ARS NET. Clear any of the above exams, you can go for Phd in almost any university or CSIR, ICMR institutes in India.BioPharma Industry is an evergreen industry and getting into QA/QC jobs or F&D jobs after your Masters is also one of the best options you have got but you need to do really well in your interviews and do get hands on training experience through workshops and internships during your Masters. Pharma Companies like Dabur, Ranbaxy, Hindustan Lever and Dr Reddy's Labs that have their R & D units do offer biotechnology professionals with handsome pay-packages.Biotech Sales & Business Development is a simple field and if you are good in communications, have an excellent understanding of consumer behavior as well as business development, then you can nail this. Again my advice is to enter this only after your master’s degree.If you have a Ph.D. degree in this field, then your employability depends on the following parameters like your Ph.D. topic, from where you did your Ph.D, what is the skill set you possess and will the R&D companies be interested in your research work? If you have the answers to all your questions mentioned above then you have good news, you can get into research jobs after your Ph.D., it has huge scope with high paying salaries but your Ph.D. must be in a relevant field and your IQ must match up with industry standards.Or you can even pursue your Post doctoral studies in India or abroad (better option).Or you can take up teaching as an Assistant Professor after your Phd, it is the noblest of all professions and must be undertaken by the smartest of souls in the industry. If you have the right understanding of the subject and you think you can ignite the flame of research in your students then go for it. The educational and research institutions and labs in the field of biosciences are not that well equipped and students face a lot of problems because of this. But after this Covid pandemic, this healthcare sector, pharma and biotechnology industries are going to go for a boom with better funding from government and as it is you must be aware of the ongoing race to develop a vaccine against this virus.
