I built my life.When I first got to US almost two decades ago, I didn’t have a good time. I experienced crushing poverty, dental problems, broken cars that steam up as you drive them. Welfare. No money for rent. Degrading jobs. Fear at the grocery store’s check register of not knowing if the card will go through.Since then, I went to school, had a career, bought my first home and then investment properties. Built a business. Brought my family over. Travelled the world. Raised two awesome possum kids. Found the love of my life. Planted a garden.Every single one of my friends who immigrated to US had a similar journey. I am told this is the American way.

It means to reconcile the balance, as calculated by your check register, to the amount on hand at your bank.A reconciliation involves an accounting of all of the items in the check register that have not been processed by the bank. For example, if you write a check which has not yet been processed by your bank, that is a reconciling item (it is called a check “outstanding”). Another example would be if you deposited an amount, but the bank has not yet acknowledged the deposit (that is called a “deposit in transit”).Additionally, there may be debits or credits on your bank statement which you’ve failed to account for, such as bank fees or returned checks (i.e. non-sufficient funds checks). Any transactions recorded by the bank but not by you need to be recorded in the check register. Examples like this is part of the reasons between a difference between a “book” and “bank” balance.

Because for its time it was even more revolutionary than the iPhone. Seriously. Although there wasn't much you could do "online" back then, and you couldn't fit it in your pocket, the Apple ][ (let's call it by its correct name :-) was the first trumpet heralding "the changing of everything".It brought word processing from a special-purpose hardware machine to the average person; it brought the average person a database program that could store everything from your check register to your recipes; and it brought the average person into the world of "What If?" processing with Bob Frankston's and Dan Bricklin's Visicalc program, the world's first spreadsheet:Seriously, it is almost impossible for someone under the age of 25 to conceive of how insanely cool that thing was...provided, of course, you had a technical bent of mind and a ton of patience.(By the way, note in the ad above that the display is an analog television, with rotary tuning knobs! And note the important selling point in the ad copy: "You don't want to be limited by the availability of pre-programmed cartridges. You'll want a computer, like Apple, that you can also program yourself.")
