Well the newest US Navy Destroyer DD-1000 Zumwalt is 600 feet longand the Ticonderoga Cruiser is 567 feet long - it’s sort of mute as they both prove to be capable of the same duties it seems - so unless a design change comes along I say not a need to build more Ticonderoga class ships.

How much horse power is there in a train engine?

In the US it can vary a lot. The smallest I know of was the SW-1 at only 600hp. There was a few small industrial switchers that were even smaller. As for today's power about the smallest is the SW1000 at 1000 hp. ( not a lot made) . Most of the smaller units range between 1500hp to 2500hp. But the big power is an other story. From as much as 3000hp. to 6000hp. The largest that was ever built (that I know of was Union Pacific's Big Blow gas turbine it WAS 8500hp.!!! Two of them were saved at museums the #18 and the #26 neither of them run. The biggest running loco would be the last DD-40AX they were built at 6900hp. On the first units but it did not work that will. I heard they ran too hot. And they were derated down to 6600hp. One is still run as far as I know of #6936 on UP restored fleet in Wyoming. But most of the big power is between 4000hp and 5000hp. It seem when they try to break the 5000hp mark it can be asking for short life spans on the power and more maintenance issues and be very expensive. Over time the engine blocks have gotten larger. As the case of EMD's, the early ones were the 567's then came the 645's then came the 710's. what that is if you don't is the cubic inch PER CELINDER!! And there was very few 8 celinder units most have 12 to 16. There was some as much as 20! (SD-45). The SD-45's ran the 645 power unit. Most of the SD-45's have been retired. The SD-45 was rated at 3600 hp. What I understand was there was a problem with the crankshafts cracking. Some of the units had there engines removed and replaced with the same power as the SD40–2 at 3000hp. But they kept the original cooling system. To look at the unit it will look the same on the outside.
