How is the freshers party at NIT Silchar?

Hell of a excitement and entertainment it is. A wonderful welcoming programme by the college, for the fresher’s to begin their college journey. It brings the new faces closer to the seniors and to their new batch mates.Organised at : NITS Auditorium/ Sports complex.Dress Code : First day of college life. Anyone want to look dapper right..??Boys : Formal or semi-formal.Girls : I dont know much about girls dresses :-D , but they usually wear traditional and casual dresses as you mentioned, kurtis, frock suit, jeans, saris, etc.The practices and arrangements begin weeks before it, which becomes more enchanting. It also avails the junior to become more closer to their seniors. On the day, the function begins, the Director welcomes and addresses the freshers along with the Dean sirs and faculties. They are being introduced to the College Gymkhana body and its activities, college activities, academic life and opportunities,etc.. delivered food packets. And, off course, it consists of music, dances, dramas, ramps…. and hell of a lot including the Mr. Fresher and Miss Fresher competition.I hope the below attached some pics say enough of it…Image courtesy: Obiettivo, Photography Club NIT Silchar.Nevertheless, Department Freshers’ party are also there in spite of the General college freshers.Keep your fingers crossed…

What is the craziest story you heard in NITK Surathkal?

It was 11TH Feb 2010. Ragging was common by then. We used to get ragged on a regular basis. It was mild ragging so most of us didn't have any problem with that. One night our seniors told us to bring condoms and bras next night for the ragging session. Initially we protested but after their persuasive power we accepted it. All of us were excited about buying these things. We happily went to surathkal and went to medical shop. We told the shopkeeper to give five packets of condoms. He smiled and asked us about the type and flavor. We decided on dotted type and strawberry flavor (for future references never use strawberry they smell a lot). Then we went to a shop which sells bras and panties. We were very uncomfortable while purchasing because there was only a lady shopkeeper. We asked her about the sizes and finally took some bras. I still think what she might be thinking about us.On 12th night around 11 our seniors gave us a call. Everyone took four condoms and one bra. We went to terrace of 8th block. There were around 30 juniors. Then our seniors came and told us to inflate the condoms (eeewww). Then they told us to tie them around the chest (to look like breasts) and tie two below the waist as our balls. We did as they demanded. Now they told us to go topless (don't fantasize we were all boys!) Then bras were on. Believe me it was fun for us too. Then they told us to do few small things (not vulgar). Now one of our seniors suggested taking all the juniors for a round in the entire 8th block. Now it was a time for us to feel ashamed. They told us to make a line. We all stood up and formed a line. Suddenly some of us realized that a person was standing near the only narrow gate of the terrace, it was dark so it was not easy to say who that person was, so no one gave another look at him. Then our seniors told us to move. It was that precise time when that guy came in light and started shouting "NO ONE MOVES, STAY AT YOUR PLACE". To our horror he was the warden of the block, Dodamani. We all were paralyzed and didn’t know what to do. So we started looking for seniors. It was an amazing site to see all our seniors jumping from the roof. Dodamani realized after few seconds what is happening. By that time all juniors collected t-shirts, burst all condoms and threw the bras and started jumping off the terrace It all happened at lightning speed. It was total chaos. To catch us Dodamani ran towards us but because of daily ragging ( running around the ground 4-5 times and doing 100 sit-ups) we were more active, adrenaline rush was another factor. Most of us jumped from the terrace (believe me it’s hard to jump when you can’t see the bottom and don’t know if there are stones, dirt or gutter). Some were clever enough to run through the gate as Doda was busy catching others. It was like he was trying to catch all the rabbits at one time. After jumping and getting scratched all over the body everyone ran towards their hostels. Some hid in other hostels and some were lucky enough to reach their rooms. For the next two days security was as tight as if some terrorist attack happened. But surprisingly no one got caught! There are different versions of what happened after when people jumped from terrace. Someone told that GB gates were secured because Dodamani was thinking that on the 8th block terrace there were (Seriously!!) so he wanted to catch them. There were some other rumors also. Finally when everything cooled down it was named as 'JALLIANWALA BAGH INCIDENT'.

Why is obesity rarely seen in Japan?

Sorry if somebody has mentioned what I am about to say but here’s my perspective in three parts, Children, Teens, and Adults.Children - When my kids were in kindergarten, they were told a simple rule about snacks: if you eat something sweet, drink something non-sweet; if you drink something sweet, eat something non-sweet. My childhood birday parties were about having as much cake and ice cream you could eat, and many flavours of pop (soda). Birthdays here tend to be family affairs with either a small cake or a single cake slice each. Go to a cake shop and look at the size of cakes they have versus the large slabs of cake at a supermarket in North America. Snack time (oyatsu no jikan) frequently includes non-sweet snacks, which can still be not exactly healthy but are certainly not just packets of sugar and fat (though those snacks do exist). Ice cream is sold in modest amounts and not four-litre buckets of self-serve-at-home.When I went to school, my lunches had fruit and vegetable sticks with homemade bread. But my friends had Wagon Wheels (like Japanese chocopie), Twinkies, cookies, etc. Here in Japan, as far as I know, school lunches are all prepared at schol or by a company. Everyone gets the same lunch and it includes rice, vegetables, meat and some other things all in small and reasonable portions (no peanut butter and jelly sandwiches). Desert at its most decadent might be a small cup of fruit jelly but is usually a slice of fresh fruit.Teenagers - With schedules packed with club activities (e.g. three hours of tennis practice five or six days a week!), cram schools, and other extracurricular activities combined with the students communting on foot, by bicycle, or bus and train (and not being driven everywhere by Mom’s Taxi!), teenagers are really too busy to just sit and eat chips while watching TV. You’ll also find many teens are just as likely to buy some non-sweet bread snack from the convenience store as they are to buy chocolate or ice cream. But one big difference between Japan and western countries is that the convenience stores have all sorts of healthy food options, including proper bento meals and the infamous rice ball. When I travel abroad in western countries, there’s often little outside of various sweet and fatty snacks. Add all the tea options for drinks and you cut out lots of liquified sugar. I heard in Hawaii water is more expensive than Coke, so some people drink Coke when they’re thirsty. I actually miss all these teas when I go home and stop at a convenience store that has mostly sugar drinks and unnaturally-coloured sports drinks. That said, I have noted that there are more overweight teens and kids now than there were 19 years ago when I first came here.Adults - Many adults bring lunches from home made with the same attention to health: rice, vegetables, and a modest amount of meat. Supermarkets and convenience stores also offer better health choices for lunch than hamburgers and pizza.Personal observation: house wives are more likely to be overweight than working adults.Seniors around here also have regular activities to keep busy, whether it be gateball or golf, hiking or gardening. Where I come from, people retire and go on cruises. Here people retire and start mountaineering! I was so surprised when I first started hiking in Japan because I encountered so many seniors, even people in their eighties, out scaling the peaks. One final thought: I feel that in western countries recently there is a movement to say that obesity is beautiful. If someone makes a fat comment they are slammed for fat-shaming. In Japan there are fat people who are comedic celebrities on TV. But their weight is used as part of the humour, for better or for worse. Basically in Japan, being overweight is still not a sign of beauty or good health. When I reached forty, the local city government started sending me coupons for annual health checks. I went to one finally last year and I was told that I was several kilograms over my ideal weight for my age and height and I was invited to join one of several offered free seminars on how to improve your health simply by eating better and getting more exercise out of your daily routine. No gyms! Just live your daily life in a better way.Japan thinks like this.
