Viktoria Savs - served in the Austro-Hungarian Army during the First World War disguised as a man. She was one of two known female soldiers on the Austrian front lines (the other was Stephanie Hollenstein). She served with the knowledge of her superiors, but virtually unrecognized as a woman, on the Dolomite front from 1915 to 1917. After a severe injury in May 1917, she was hospitalized, and her biological sex was discovered, ending her military career. She was awarded several medals for her dedication and bravery. She was known as the "Heroine of the Drei Zinnen."Stephanie Hollenstein - At the beginning of World War I, she took a medical training course and, in 1915, went to Vorarlberg, where she joined the Standschützen under the name "Stephan Hollenstein". Although her comrades-in-arms were aware of the deception, her superiors did not discover it for several months; at which time she was sent home. This incident attracted public attention, however, and she was assigned as a war painter for the "Kriegspressequartier [de]" (War Press Bureau). In that capacity, she was sent to the front on three occasions and, in 1916, was among the first recipients of the Karl Troop Cross. She later received numerous commissions from the Museum of Military HistoryFlora Sandes - was a British woman who served as an officer of the Royal Serbian Army in World War I. She was the only British woman officially to serve as a soldier in WWI. Initially a St. John Ambulance volunteer, she travelled to the Kingdom of Serbia, where she was welcomed and formally enrolled in the Serbian army. She was subsequently promoted to the rank of Sergeant major, and, after the war, to Captain. She was decorated with seven medals.Wanda Gertz - a Polish woman of noble birth, who began her military career in the Polish Legion during World War I, dressed as a man, under the pseudonym of "Kazimierz 'Kazik' Żuchowicz".Dorothy Lawrence - an English journalist who posed as a male soldier in order to report from the front line during World War I. She managed to obtain a Khaki soldier uniform from a friend. as well as getting a false identity. However trench life affected her health, and she later revealed her gender, afraid that if she needed medical attention her true identity would be discovered and those who helped her would be punished. After revealing herself she was suspected of being a spy and was held under arrest until after the battle. She was then sent home under a strict agreement not to publish her experiences. Lawrence slowly began to lose her sanity and in the end eventually ended up dying in an insane asylum.Zoya Smirnow (no pic) - Zoya Smirnowa (1897/98 – after 1916) was a Russian woman who fought during World War I disguised as a man. She and 11 other schoolmates disguised themselves as men so that they could fight in the war. Smirnowa was 16 when she enlisted; two of the women were as young as 14. They participated in the defense of Galicia and the Carpathians. Smirnowa became a representative of the group when she recounted their story to the English press.As Smirnowa recounted to the newspapers, the girls left their Moscow school without informing anyone on the eighth day of mobilization — i.e. at the end of July 1914. They traveled to Lviv where they dressed as men and enlisted in the army undetected. When the first bombs fell on their position, they cried out, as did many of the men. One girl, Zina Morozov, was killed in the Carpathians when a bomb fell at her feet. She was buried by her friends. Two other girls were subsequently wounded. After Smirnowa was wounded, her gender was discovered.Smirnowa's story was retold in Magnus Hirschfeld's The Sexual History of the World War (1930), a book that was later banned and burned during the Third Reich.
