Vote NO on California Proposition 63. This proposition advertises to do two major things which impose an undue burden on California residents while simultaneously doing nothing to enhance public safety.First, Proposition 63 requires any person who buys ammunition from a licensed ammunition dealer to first obtain a $50 permit from the California Department of Justice. Such a permit would be valid for four years.To be quite honest, this seems like a ploy to harass gun owners and deter legal gun ownership with extra and unnecessary expenses.Here we have 100 round packages of .22 Long Rifle ammunition, the most common, popular, and versatile ammunition in the world. Each package costs $8-$10.Were Proposition 63 to pass, just the permit fee would equal the cost of 500 rounds of ammunition. For people who don’t do a lot of target shooting on a regular basis, that $50 fee is pretty significant.The next problem is what that $50 fee goes to, administrative and enforcement costs. At first glance, this seems like a reasonable provision; you have to pay people to do their jobs. But consider this, administration and enforcement takes time. Department of Justice employees who are dealing with background checks for ammunition permits could be spending time doing other more important things like facilitating the function of the California court system.The second major thing Proposition 63 is advertised to do is eliminate “large capacity magazines”. Detachable magazines with capacities larger than 10 rounds have been illegal to acquire, import, or manufacture in California for anyone except law enforcement organizations since the year 2000.However, “large capacity magazines” possessed by individuals before 2000 were grandfathered in and remained legal. 16 years later, these magazines have become rather rare. Proposition 63 would require:(c) A person who, prior to July 1, 2017, legally possesses a large-capacity magazine shall dispose of that magazine by any of the following means:(1) Remove the large-capacity magazine from the state.(2) Prior to July 1, 2017, sell the large-capacity magazine to a licensed firearms dealer.(3) Destroy the large-capacity magazine.(4) Surrender the large-capacity magazine to a law enforcement agency for destruction.Source: (SB-1446 Firearms: magazine capacity.)This literally only punishes the law abiding by definition.Proposition 63 can not and will not prevent criminals from traveling to any bordering states and illegally importing ammunition or “large capacity magazines” into California. In many cases, the illegal importation of ammunition from neighboring states would in fact be cheaper than legally obtaining ammunition. Proposition 63 would be a waste of resources for all involved parties.

Meet Dr. Kafeel KhanDr. Kafeel Khan is an Indian Doctor (MBBS, MD) who was in charge of the encephalitis ward at BRD medical college in Gorakhpur, India. On 8th of August 2017, the oxygen supply of the hospital was suspended by the suppliers over non-payment of dues for several months. Upon sensing the chaos it could create, Dr. Khan called up nearly all of his superiors as well as the district administration but none came forward to mitigate the situation. He then personally went to the suppliers, bought 250 oxygen cylinders from his own pocket and managed to buy two days’ time for the patients.The administration however, did not move anything and the cylinders brought in were eventually exhausted. On the night of 10th august, the oxygen supply was over and it lead to the death of over 200+ children within next 10 hours. The agonized cries of the parents soon became national news. As the facts started coming to light, the government resorted to damage control. The UP Govt was headed by Adityanath, known for his hatred of the Muslim community and hate speeches against them. According to Dr. Khan, Adityanath was angry that the government was being blamed while Dr Khan was being hailed for his efforts. The govt made Dr. Khan a scapegoat and suspended him, charging him with corruption and medical negligence.Dr. Khan would then spend 9 months in prison after which the court ruled out the evidences presented against him. His brothers had shut their business, devoting all their time to fighting the legal battle for him. While they had hoped that things will improve once he is out, his family instead started receiving death threats. 2 months later, his brother was shot at by unknown assailants but fortunately survived. Even after his release, the UP government neither released him from the service nor revoked his suspension. This meant he was officially still a government employee and could not do private consultations. To add to it, his salaries till date were held off. With neither him nor his brothers able to make a living, Dr. Khan and his family went bankrupt with medical and legal expenses. Their car was sold off and jewels of all women in the family were mortgaged to meet the expenses.It was at this time that some people started a crowdfunding campaign to help him and his family. In a few days’ time, the campaign managed to raise over 2 million rupees and helped the family survive and access legal help.Cut to the present, and Bihar, the neighboring state, came into news when over 100 children died of Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES) in June 2019. The public health machinery was so inadequate that hospitals were overburdened and there was a shortage of medicine. Dr Khan, along with a team of 6 other doctors, went to the area and started conducting camps in the nearby villages. They sensitized the villagers about prevention and treatment of the disease and distributed medicines & ORS for free. These camps have been going on for more than a week now and over 1500 children were inspected.Imagine going through all the pain, humiliation, fear and injustice that he and his loved ones did. Can you imagine still going out and doing your job?This man has a resolve made of steel. He just refuses to give up, always wears a smile, reaches the places that need his skills and makes sure that medical help reaches as far as possible.It is people like him that build a country.
