I know exactly what you mean when I moved from NY to Florida, I was seeing the same doctor since I was 18, I moved at 35 so he knew me really well… the problem is that when you start up with someone new and especially if they don’t review your records from your past doctor, you really have a hard time getting meds. I’ve been on the same migraine pills since I’m 17 but yet this new doc doesn’t like writing what I’m on… I said to him look thru my file see why I’m on this and see what I’ve tried before… you have to be your own advocate and if there are reasons you’re on certain meds rather than others make it clear to the doctor why… I usually can have him write what I need if I can justify it… but let me tell you some states are going nuts with controlled substances so they got a lot of doctors fearful for the licenses if they don’t know you well… best advice what helped me, I made weekly appointments and asked for just enough of my meds to get me thru the week… he eventually saw I wasn’t drug seeking and gave me more my normal doses… and if all else fails there are other doctors…

I recently took in a teenaged girl whose father had beat her up to the point that her siblings called the police. There had previously been abusive behavior in the family before, with the father of these children beating one or the other of them, but never to the point that one of them decided to call the police. When the beating was over, with the police on their way, the siblings took pictures of the evidence that he had done something to her. He was arrested and she ran away. The first place she found to live decided to kick her out after a couple of months, so we took her in and gave her some stability.I knew the family was poor, but I had no idea how bad things were. I noticed that she kept wearing my daughter’s shoes. Eventually, I realized that she had one pair of very old and worn out Converse All Stars, which I found out later had originally belonged to my daughter. My daughter gave her the sneakers over a year ago, they were probably already two years old, because her one pair of shoes had been urinated on by one of her father’s cats and she couldn’t get the smell out. They were all but falling apart. My mother-in-law found out about the shoe issue and took both her and my daughter shopping for new Doc Marten’s boots (or whatever other shoes they may like), which she explained would be a Christmas present but that they could have early. Believe me when I say that she considered this a gift.The girl is trying to be self-sufficient and she isn’t accustomed to being given things without it somehow costing her something in the end. She’s very pretty and I’d hate to think what that could mean, or what it has meant. She had a little cash on her that her mother had given her (so she would have to listen to her insisting she come home) and asked if she could go to Sears after they picked out their boots and thanked my mil. We said ok and my husband’s mom asks if there is anything else she needs. My husband was recently laid off, right around the time she moved in with us, and we have enough to pay our bills and buy groceries with my salary and my husband’s unemployment, but that’s it. We aren’t buying presents. We admit we don’t know because she won’t say she needs anything. She even buys her own cat litter, cat food, and tampons. She asks where they went and I say they’re probably in the undergarment section of Sears, that’s usually why they go there. We met up with them and I was right… so mil asked her to pick out four more pairs of panties and bras… another Christmas present. Poor kid couldn’t breathe and looked like a deer in headlights. I told her it was ok, she is family now and this is her Christmas present. She was overwhelmed by underwear and boots. She considered that a gift.And when we go to my in-laws for Christmas on Sunday, I know some of what she’s getting… none of them basic necessities… and I’m thinking I may need to bring my dad’s oxygen tank with us. Makes my daughter look spoiled in comparison (and believe me when I say she is one of the least spoiled 18 year olds I’ve ever met). It’s been total culture shock for her.
